This idea was a failure but the Tigers seemed to like to play the better teams. At the start of the season, Peden, Gilbert, Saute- ben, Mitchell, Thomas and Beavers played most ef the games with Garrett, Gresham, and Dalton seeing a let of service. Haddock and Sholar didn't come out until after the Christmas holidays, while Gilbert was lost due te age. The team started eff very well but ran into a string of three overtime games which were lost. This threw the Tigers into a slump in which several games were lost which might have been wen. However, toward the end of the season the team improved rapidly and finally ended the season around the 500 mark. In the District-Tournament the Tigers lost to Sinking Fork after leading for the first three quarters. In this game the loss of Haddock, due to being fouled out, was the deciding factor. The highlights of the season were the two wins over Russellville, who are always hard for the Tigers to de- feat, the win ever Clarksville, and the defeat of Cel- lege High after they had wen two games from the Tigers earlier in the season. Sauteben, Shelar and Garrett will be lost through graduation. Dalton and Thomas will be lest after the first semester of next year. Prospects for a good sea- son next year are bright as Peden, Haddock, Mitchell, Gresham, and Beavers will be back for the entire sea- son and several good prospects are coming up from the reserve team. ' The team was well managed by Horrell and Southern who were on the job all ef the time, taking care of equipment and giving aid to the players. Basket ball for next year should be given a boost as Hopkinsville has joined the Big 16, a group ef the larger schools of Kentucky, which has for its purpose the stimulating of inter-scholastic athletics among the larger schools. McKee, who is still a sponsor of the club. It has been in existence almost every year since that time, therefore gaining the reputation of being the oldest club in the high school. The first Home Economics club, organized in the days before home economics was any more than just cooking and sewing, was rather quaintly called the Domestic Art Club. Its members seeked to better themselves in the purely domestic arts of cooking and sewing--a contrast to the home economics club members of today who strive to broaden and enrich the entire field of family relationships and home living. The Domestic Art club grew in size with the years and gradually in- creased' its aims until those of the present day club were evolved and the club changed its name to the more Modern MHcme Economics Clubn and affiliated with the American Home Economics Association in 1927, The Home Economics club meets every other Monday during the fourth period in the newly completed school auditorium, A short business meeting is followed by a program designed to interest and educate the members along various lines in keeping with present day home economics such as new trends in clothing and foods, home life in foreign countries, and studios of old glassware or other hobbies. During the first semester of 1957-1958 the officers of the club were: Grace Haddock, prcsidentg Mary Edna Harris, vice-president, Agnes Eckles, secretaryg Betsy Gary, troasurerg and Frances A, Garrett, program chair- man. In the early part of February the second semester election of officers took place with the following chosen by tho club: Frances A, Garrett, president, Ivyl Lilo, vice-president, Juanita Owen, secretary, Virginia Cobb, troasurerg and Alice Gough, program chairman. One of the impressive programs of the second semester was the Rainbow service of installation of new members which was held in the auditorium during the regular club meeting time. Except for a part of one year this organization has been active since its beginning. Girl Reserves are the teen-age girls of the Young Women's Christian Association. Their purpose is nTo Face Life Squarely and To Find and Give the Best.n The triangle, the symbol, represents the three-fold aim: to develop mentally, physically, and spiritual- ly. The Girl Reserves of H.H.S. have been liberal in helping others at Thanksgiving and at Christmas as well as other times. They have served in various capacities not only for their school but for the town and community. The District Girl Reserve Conference has met in Hopkinsville twice, in 1928 and again in 1955. Margaret Haynes, a former member of the Hopkinsville Girl Reserves, was president of the District Conference in 1955. The Girl Reserves of the Hopkinsville High School were for several years contestants in the State Bible Contest, receiving a banner for two consecutive years. for scholarship out for the number of girls competing. It is believed that the Girl Reserves of H.H.S. dur- ing the fifteen years of their work have discovered new things, have had good times, have done something worth while, have made real friends and have learned more about God in His world. The Girl Reserve Club of 1957-58 has so far had a very successful year. There were forty-eight members the first semester and fifty-two members the second. The officers for the first semester were: Marian Anderson, presidentg Agnes Eckles, vice-presidentg Elizabeth Ann Brumfield, secretaryg Mary Cary, treasurer, 'i At the end of the first semester Marian Anderson was graduated and Agnes Ecklesgythe vice-president, be- came president. , May the Girl Reserves of H.H.S. ever be true to their Q pledge, which is: I will do my best to honor God, My Country and My Com unity, to help other girls and to be in all ways a loyal,.true member of the Girl Reserves, A M- 3., X K. ey, 5 YU! f X if . rl? No honor conferred by the school excels. that repre- sented by the National Hbnor Society. It represents the fundamental objectives for which schooksare insti- tuted and gives recognition to those who have attained most nearly the desired ends. Other honors at the dis- posal of the school are only partial in the sense that they recognize specialized ability, skill or talent, but this Society looks upon education as a total prod- uct measured by the four dimensions of life. The emblem of this Society is the keystone and flam- ing torch. The keystone bears at its base the letters S, L, C, and S, which stand for the four cardinal prin- ciples of its orranization: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Scholarship is the power of the mind to dispel ignorance and superstition through scientific investigation of truthg Leadership is the power of personality that blazes the trail for man's up ward climbg Character, the composite of all the com on virtues, sets the seal of righteousness upon our every endeavor, while Service is the beginning and end of our education, the altar of altruism from which God's bless ings to man have been vouchsafed. Thus the keystone symbolizes the high ideals of this Society. The flam- ing torch is the emblem of its purpose. To bear for- ward the searching light of truth, to lead that others may follow in the light, to keep burning in our school a high ambition for the enduring values of life, and to serve, these purposes are symbolized in the torch.
