That's not the appropriate type of ending for this particular school or this particular year — the last year for Hopkins to be together. It's not easy to think of a good way to say good-bye. So. let's go back over this funny year. Just grab a Coke, sit down, and relax. Close your eyes and recall... Out in the world: Man steps on different soil — the moon. The war goes on. A new draft lottery gives everybody a fair chance but some still won't go. Spiro criticizes TV which is as American as Momma's apple pie. Love-ins. Communal live-ins. Population explosions. Black Panthers. Unisex. Ban the bomb? Biafra surrenders, but thousands still die. Polution. Bomb the Ban? What’s on the home scene? It's the third and best year of mod scheduling. SOUST is abolished. Purple Power hits its peak, despite a threatened teacher strike. Posters on the walls, people in the halls. ID cards. Moratorium. Reg Room, announcements. Split shift. Small groups. Lectures. Snacktime. Decorated halls and Kantaring in the corridors at Christmas. Fire alarms — true or false? Tournaments. Senior slump. Rumble — beat. And more of the same: books to crack, tests to take, and grades to make. Monotony and repetition. The usual frustrations and confusions. It’s all reflected in the faces of the Hopkins High student. 3 Different people do the same things in new ways. It's a changed scene. New faces with a new focus. Emphasis is on the individual: the student, the scholar, the drop-out. the teacher, the class clown, the freak-out. the administrator. Attention focuses on what he ways and thinks and does and feels: on his seeking to know himself and the people, places, and things around him. In response, the ’70 WARRIOR Focuses on Faces, to capture the last year of HHS. This is your friendly, neighborhood, downtown Hopkins administrator speaking. Mr. Zielin's novel introduction to special announcements is one indication of his vibrant personality. His spirit is felt in his office of assistant principal. He works closely with students and is extremely concerned with their activities. His willingness to talk, and his understanding have been a real asset to the student-administrator relationship. Mr. Zielin's active support of Hopkins sports and activities has added greatly to the total spirit of the school. He has helped to cement the faculty-administration and faculty-student relationships. Or were large group lectures boring? Did the lunchroom get kind of sickening? Were you weary from dragging out your I.D.? Was it really worth it? YOU BET IT WAS! We had a good time with the B-squad games. Pep Club, and square dancing. JAMES JORDAHL: I see an increasing recognition by the youth of today that they have not only the opportunity, but the moral responsibility to face and solve some of the age-old horrors that have eluded and overwhelmed my generation. I speak of poverty, pollution, oppression, and the callousness of unconcern. MR. JOHN TOBLER: Because of technology, man will discover new ways to synthesize protein and other life giving substances. Breakfast will consist of a condensed coffee cube and 48 multi-colored pills. Man will be able to restore valuable minerals to land and cultivate areas never dreamed possible in marsh, swamp, jungle and deserts. MISS SUE LEGORE: I think our schools will gradually learn how to practice freedom successfully. For one thing, our youth are starting to ask for an inner freedom — a chance to live their own lives, not their parents’ lives or their teachers’ lives. I see them taking this freedom and imposing an order which is meaningful to them and which can result in more sincere actions. MR. JOHN PRELLWITZ: Only because everyone else is pessimistic about man’s ability to elevate the rest of his capacities to equal his monstrous strides in technology. I must be optimistic. In a choice between despair and anger, anger seems to be the optimistic attitude, because you don’t ’’cop out”, you work on it. It's only when things get really bad that people begin to reexamine and just might decide to do something. MR. VERNE ANDERSON: In the next decade, students will not have to get out of bed. They will have an electric plug surgically attached to their brain. All they'll have to do is plug into the computerized television set and information will be printed on their cortex. Hopkins High will be a broadcasting station. Or maybe the Roman Colosseum will be reintroduced and everyone will be fed to the lions. MR. DON ERPELDING: In the following decade the public schools of this nation will undergo a number of changes such as: a year-round four quarter school year with optional vacation periods, computerized Individual Instruction, concentration on environmental studies and pollution, and students themselves determining when they will terminate a course by their own performances, instead of termination occurring because the school year has ended. 88 MRS. DOROTHY ROCK: The seventies promise to be enlightening because students today are more aware, literate and capable of developing workable solutions than ever before. Solutions that will enable man’s institutions to be more responsive to human needs, and solutions which will not rely upon man's perfectability. but rather rely on man’s capacity to reach up and out in his ultimate moments. It is during these ultimate moments when human progress can know no bounds and human limitations fade by comparison. MR. FRANK OHLY: The future will depend, to a great degree, on the young. What use will they make of the past? These young people will be faced with great problems. My hope is that they will do better than we have. They must It is my belief that they will, but they cannot do it alone. All generations must respond to the challenges. We must work together drawing upon the talents and knowledge of all. MR. AL CHADWICK: There will be less required courses and more action courses. Teachers will enjoy their |Ob more, and therefore. the students will enjoy their teachers more. There will be less emphasis on grades and competition: kids will start to help each other live better together, and they will enjoy doing it. There will be much more freedom to learn and the process of learning will be no longer something that we make’’ students do. They will be eager to learn because it is exciting to grow. MR. KEN WEDDING: The scone inside HHS ten years from now will be different. A large electronic data board stands in the foyer. Computer controlled, the board lists class meetings for the day and ideas for new courses. The curriculum offers courses in a wide variety of topics from astrophysics to Zen Buddhism. New courses start and others drop from the curriculum every week. MR. CHARLES THIELE: My grandfather was one of the first settlers on the shores of Lake Minnetonka, a place so beautiful that Indians considered it sacred and would not do battle there. Now after 90 years, the shores are completely built-up. the water is unfit todrink. and the lake itself is dying. Population expansion must be stopped before the quality of life is ruined for all of us. It is not yet too late, and the hope lies with you. MR. PAULNOREEN: The world must solve the problem of over-population m the near future or face a worsening of many crises which have their roots in the population problem. e.g. — race, pollution, quality of life. etc. I feel that in the absence of individual responsibility In solving the problem, governments will soon have to impose some form of population control. 89 Warrior families welcomed four foreign exchange students to their homes this year. Junko Watami from Japan stayed with Carol and Janet Jacobson. Barb Gallusser from Switzerland lived with Jan Harrison. Aroldo Leite from Brazil spent the year with Dwight Benson. Another addition to our student body was a Rotary Exchange student. Yoly Ovando from Bolivia, who lived with John Jordano's. Jean and Janet Dahl- berg's. and Nancy Coune's families. AFS was active throughout the year. Among the many successful events were a pancake breakfast and Super Thursday. Our own AFS student. Chip Glaser spent his summer in Iran, coming back with many memories and stories. AFS provides HHS’ers with a better understanding of people with different backgrounds, viewpoints, and ideas. AFS or IRC provided the answer, while on the home front. Student Union involved those who wanted increased student participation in school policy and curriculum. Theatre and Drama enthusiasts were fulfilled by TAG. GRA built strong bodies twelve ways through sports programs. while Campus Life and Hi-Y continued to provide an opportunity for fun and friendship. The variety of clubs afforded everyone with a chance to expand and grow as individuals. Day 225: We re having trouble getting into high gear — 20 days left and only 2 pages done. Day 250: Panic, worry. Deadlines are monsters. Day 260: Been working every night till 12. My brain is all fuzzy. 100 Pages left. We'll never make it. Day 275: Don't talk so good no more. Too tired. Only 30 pages left. Somebody hit me with an eraser. Copy to write, pictures to crop. Day 280: Done. The hours of arguing, rearranging, losing pictures, and thinking about suicide are over. Well. Next year it'll be different. STATE DEBATE CHAMPIONS: Bruce Barron. Sue Hall. Flint Schier. Julie Brendemuehl. Brent Stenberg. and Coach Richard Fawcett. 96 Hopkins’ debaters had an outstanding season this year. Coach Dick Fawcett, in his second year here at Hopkins, led the team to an impressive number of wins in debate tournaments. and then on to the Region Five Championship. and finally to Hopkins’ fifth State Championship in six years. Debaters do not start the year trophy hunting however. The main motivation for the hours of research and verbal exercise is the desire of each debater to do his best in the mental gymnastics, resource application, and rhetoric that is required each time he faces an opposing team. Though most students didn’t know who their representatives were, few minded because individual inia-tive was the watchword for the year. A new innovation was “Take a Teacher to Lunch Week”, which saw several brave souls treating their favorite teacher to a hearty meal in our cafeteria. These questions and others like them, inspired a new course at Hopkins: Humanities. Operating on a pass-fail grading system, a steering committee of students and teachers initiated a truly independant study program. Resource people from the school and community introduced various areas of the wide field of the humanities. Individuals and groups branched off into special interest areas, and reported their progress in small groups and lectures. Interpretive dances, light shows, slide presentations, and original poetry were some of the ways that the students chose to express their feelings about themselves and the expanding world around them. Theatre Arts class moved in many new directions this year. Voice training, rehearsal and performance of short scenes, instant improvisation, and the rehearsal study of whole plays were a few of the attempts to forge a curriculum which would serve the needs of students interested in the theatre. Guest lecturers included directors and actors from the U of M and the Institute of Arts. Students built sets, saw and reviewed plays outside the school, and worked in major productions in the extra-curricular program. The effort continues to blend academic study of the theatre with an experimental curriculum. 110 «� The extra-curricular program of the Theatre Arts Department opened with a contemporary production of Sophocles’ Oedipus. The production dwelled on the ritual aspects of the play: the relationship between the ill-fated king and the community he ruled. A huge rear projection screen utilizing head shots, abstractions and contemporary shots attempted to draw parallels to today's problems without losing the timeless values of the play: a man in search of himself. Warren Smith played Oedipus and Bonnie Wilson played Jocasta. Perhaps the most startling feature of the production was a chorus of 40. most of them actors and actresses who had never been on stage before. Other principals were Chan Carlson. Buff Rix. and Tom Fleming. The Winter Play, performed in the Scene Shop Theatre, was a series of three one acts: “Here We Are” by Dorothy Parker. “Hello Out There by William Saroyan, and a new play written and directed by student Warren Smith. This new play. The Train was a first for Hopkins High School Theatre. Students discovered the joys (and pains) of directing their own material. Meanwhile Scott Jenson and Rick Free undertook a production of Eugene O’Neill’s In the Zone. again for the Scene Shop Theatre, while Dennis Christianson did a ’Fractured Fairytale' for grade school students in the district. In the Spring John Ondov directed Joseph Heller's satire on war. We Bombed in New Haven, featuring a largely male cast with many new people taking significant roles. All in all the year indicated progress toward wider participation and more student productions in the Scene Shop Theatre. Junior Bonnie lilies and Sophomore Cindy Ry-den were her attendants. The Variety Show was a blast. The main attraction was a big, silver Warrior 11 spacecraft. The acts were out-of-this world and included Chicken Proctor snatching cute chicks from opposing nests when he was let out of the looney bin. The Seniors flushed out the competition and nabbed first place in the float contest with the creative slogan. Poop on Park . Although our team put up a tough fight. Hopkins lost the big game to St. Louis Park. At the dance, sponsored by Cavalettes. the C.A. Quintet created a romantic atmosphere for the finale of Homecoming '69. The gang was decked out in their worst duds but Karen Johnson and Keith Kerstens stole the prize with their monk and sister creations. Marryin' Sam was on hand for all who wanted to get hitched. All couples who weren't on hand-holding terms found themselves thrown in the pokey. As all good things must come to an end. Sadie did too. (Statistics show 99% of the couples who were married at Sadie got divorced within one month of the dance!). Her attendants included Juniors Barb Leeds and Judy Hesketh. and Sophomores Laurie Kuipers and Sandy Randolph. Cyndi and her court looked on as the Snow-Daze Variety Show began. Acts depicted Hopkins: Past. Present, and Future, from the redlipped 1950 gals to the lippy 1970 chicks. The show consisted of group talent as well as superb individual talent. It was a fitting final tribute to all HHS’ers and their accomplishments. The annual Sno-Daze dance, sponsored by Cavalettes. ended the week of festivities. From the far corners of the school the champions gathered for the ordeal. The IMB All-Stars answered the call for the student body. They were pitted against the best — The Establishment. Thereafter ensued the battle-royale. Both teams strove gallantly for sweet victory, but the Establishment captured and held an early lead. In desperation the All-Stars pulled out all the stops and unleashed their secret weapon — The Masked Marvel. Naturally. The Establishment was shaken by the appearance of this seasoned Warrior. Despite their apprehension they defeated the All-Stars. 45-40. High points of th game included Tom Brown's able and amusing commentary and the teams' own colorful and funny brand of B-Ball. Other moments of hysteria included a polished. synchronized dance by our Warriorettes. a spontaneous lynching, and a romantic moment when the IMB cheerleaders could no longer resist the charms of Mr. Hutton and assaulted him. Driving along any road here in Hopkins during the fall, you are bound to see at least one solitary runner plodding on in the mist. If you knew him and honked your horn he would look up. smile, and jerk the peace sign as you drove by.The loneliness of a cross-country runner is dreary, monotonous and sometimes silent. Only the sound of his breathing and the plop. plop, plop of his feet as they travel over the ground. Sometimes he will look down and watch them because when he was looking straight ahead it didn’t seem as though he was moving. But in competition, he is not lonely. He is trying to win, and putting forth his best effort. Every breath is a pain in his side and the last 50 yards seemed longer than the whole two mile course. Coach Skinny Paul” Noreen is different than other coaches. He works out side-by-side with his boys, driving them on and suffering their suffering as well as his own. But as they cross the finish line, all that suffering and pain seems worthwhile. Contrary to belief, cross-country is not easy. Endless miles, loneliness, and gut-bustings. Track seems to be the sport with the most variety of events. High jumping, sprints, distance-running, pole-vaulting. etc. Who invented all those? True to its form our 68- 69 track team accomplished a lot and left few things undone. Except for distance runners, their work-out place is the field. There they throw discus, javelins, fifteen pound balls and run. run. run. Kinda like a three-ring circus. All different-shaped bodies doing different things.
