Structured within these blocks are large groups, small groups, and independent study time designed to provide a wider variety of student learning experiences. Hopefully these experiences will help the student gain greater self-confidence, independence, and responsibility. r I New size, new layouts, new color. new typography, and 21 blocks symbolize the new modular design of Hopkins in the 1968 WARRIOR. Breaking away from yearbook traditions. the 1968 WARRIOR has recorded Hopkins' progress in breaking away from tradition-bound education. Mr. Milton Ojala PASTE IBM CARD HERE DEDICATION □ THE ’67-68 SCHOOL YEAR will be remembered for the instigation of modular scheduling into everyday curriculum. One man shines out as the father of modular scheduling at Hopkins. It all started when the former Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Tanglen, advised him to attend the Stanford School Scheduling Project in ’64 and ’65. The seed was planted! This man, along with Mr. Weidner, introduced the plan to our school staff and before long Hopkins received a financial grant to become an exemplary school under the system of modular scheduling. It is with great pride that the ’67-’68 yearbook is dedicated to this man and his efforts on behalf of Hopkins—Mr. Milton Ojala. A NEW CLOCK... NEW EMPHASI ' ST ■ THE NEW DESIGN hat changed the clocks .of Hopkins High School. No longer is each class bound to the traditional hour. Tho classes can now vary from IS minutes to two hours, depending on how the subject can be taught best. The day consists of 21 modules of 20 minutes each. These modules are combined to suit best the purposes of the indivi dual group. Classes do not meet every day. Some meet once a week and others meet as often as four. The subject governs the schedule; not the schedule dictating the subject. JENSON-Scott’s daily sophomore schedule reveals a demanding course of study designed to prepare him for college entrance. While pursuing the traditionally required courses, world studies, physical education, and English, Scott also studied French, biology, and accelerated math. As a biology student, Scott was one of the first to benefit from open lab, a program of limited independent study in the sciences. Scott’s first impressions of modular scheduling were that most students didn’t use their free time effectively and that the teacher-dominated class still survived. Superintendent of Schools: I think Modular Scheduling’s greatest achievement is permitting the staff and students to look at the program with fresh eyes ... One of its effects will be in new building design, providing greater internal flexibility. There will be provisions for much more study area. We now have more than last year, but it's still not enough.” M MR. ART SMITH. District 274 PTA Chairman: Now parents are more aware of the educational environment in which their children are placed and are aware in greater depth . . . I think that the system will expand. It has to if it is to keep pace with the demands of society. The only direction Modular Scheduling can go is toward an expanded program eventually even in the junior highs. MRS. C. LERFALD. Teacher: Modular Scheduling has been a disappointment in that it makes everyone's weaknesses so much more obvious . . . Modular Scheduling's greatest achievement is putting part of the responsibility for learning on the student instead of on the teacher. My arm's getting tired of carrying all the spoons to the mouth from the plate. ROGER QUIGG. All-School President: I like the variety. Before we sat in the same class six hours a day in the same room with the same teacher. Now there's variety in class schedules. We have large groups, small groups, and the opportunity to go into a subject a little deeper on our own.” MR. ROLLIN B. CHILD. President District 274 School Board: “If nothing else students learn responsibility and develop the ability to program their own time. This I think is important whether they go on to college or not. It's particularly important for students going to college because then immediately they're in a situation requiring personal responsibility, and the same thing is true throughout life. MR. D. ECKBERG. Chairman Social Studies Department: More individualized instruction—that's what we're striving for. One of the means to get there is through behavioral objectives by which the student is told exactly what he must do. Then he may go about learning it in many ways. Students might be encouraged to go on to exceed the teacher's objectives. and from there the sky could be the limit. MR. D. R. COPPINS. Principal: The belief is of course that we're moving from the traditional type of instruction that has been teacher-dominated to one in which the students benefit by self-expression, study subjects in depth on their own initiative, and develop their own responsibility ... I think it's also important to stress that Modular Scheduling is a process of development and that that process is a continuing one. KRIS HENNINGSGARD. Senior: I think the problems with Modular Scheduling came because everyone was sort of thrown into the system. When we become more accustomed to it. a lot of the problems will be solved. Students will be able to take care of their time: teachers will be able to move faster: there'll be less vandalism. ONLY TEACHERS ARE TO USE THIS DOOR TUE KJEUJ T5ESTOKJ FACULTY FACES FRUSTRATION, SATISFACTION ■ EXCITEMENT, disillusionment, frustration. and satisfaction were only a few of the many emotional reactions of the faculty during their first year under Modular Scheduling. They began to work and teach under circumstances that were entirely foreign to some of them. To go from large group lectures to conferences with individual students required a great deal of adaptability on the part of teachers. Accepting the idea of students being free to make their own daily schedule decisions was difficult for the administration to accept. But by the end of the year the faculty not only adapted itself to the system but also created a system that was alive and vigorous. 21 ■ PICTURE 1: Mr. Ojala. Hopkins District 274 THREE MEN played instrumental roles in bringing Modular Scheduling to Hopkins High. The idea of introducing the system was basically the brain child of Mr. Ojala. the Project Director. It was he along with Mr. Weidner. Assistant Project Director, who did most of the research that was necessary before the system could be initiated. Once the basic changes the school would have to undergo were ascertained. Superintendent Dr. Green-await worked on a practical level to get the changes. Led by Mr. Coppins. it adopted a new attitude of trust and respect toward the student. Some of the responsibility for general discipline was delegated to the student body, while the administration handled specific problems. More cooperation between the administration and the student body came as a result of the change in attitude. Various services within the school also discovered the need for adaptability. Mrs. Plad-sen. hold a council of war 26 GUIDANCE GIVES GREATER SERVICE ■ GUIDANCE PLAYED an increasingly important role this year both in the Library and in the Guidance Departments. Realizing the possibility of being able to reach more students under the Modular Program, both sought to increase their capacity to serve. The Main Library increased its number of available assistants to aid students. Under Mr. Tufander. the Guidance Department introduced Senior Guidance Meetings to distribute information to Seniors and a Guidance Resource Center. Mrs. Glenda Cramer. 28 ■ AN UNDERSTANDING of family relationships and a practical knowledge of auto mechanics and business law are essential to most people in everyday life besides in professions. The home economics, industrial arts and business departments helped to distribute this knowledge to students. Under Modular Scheduling they have been able to conduct open labs. During this time students are able to work on projects or exercise various skills that areand will be useful to them. PICTURE 6: Art is for self-expression 30 ■ MODULAR SCHEDULING has brought added attractions to the Art Department this year. One revolutionary innovation was the Art Lab. These labs specialized in all areas of art from drawing and painting to sculpting and pottery. The art student progressed through each of these areas during the year, rather than staying in one room to perfect each skill. The Art Labs were also open to any student for work during his free time. L ■ I ART LAB SPARKS STUDENT'S CREATIVITY PHY ED DEMANDS VIGOR FROM SWIMMING and golf through tennis and archery, the physical education classes are always on the move. During the 1967-68 school year the Physical Education Department added open gym labs to supplement its already abundant curriculum. Here students could come in and practice their favorite sport during their unscheduled time, in an effort to obtain a balance between the academic and physically active sides of Hopkins. 32 CHANGES MUSIC SCHEDULES H THE ARRIVAL of modular scheduling necessitated numerous changes in the program of the Hopkins music department. Under the direction of Mr. Teasar. Mr. Brun-zell. and Mr. Gears, the band, orchestra, and choir were forced to meet only four hours a week instead of the usual five. CHEMISTRY STUDENTS LEARN THE EMPIRICAL SIDE OF SCIENCE. ■ THE ADVENT of Modular Scheduling has brought with it many changes to all areas of the curriculum, including the Foreign Language Department and the Science Department. This year, for the first time, students were able to meet with their teachers in small discussion groups and in large group lectures. Also established. as part of the new program, were the Foreign Language and Science Resource Centers. In each of the centers were qualified para-professionals. ready, willing, and able to help the student in need. MOD SYSTEM ALTERS SCIENCE, LANGUAGE SMALL GROUP DISCUSSIONS SPARK VIGOROUS STUDENT-TEACHER INTERACTION. IN LANGUAGE LAB FRAU NELSON LISTENS IN DURING A DAILY SESSION. 36 FLEXIBILITY has been the key word for the Social Studies Department at Hopkins. Whether working in a large group lecture or a small group discussion. the Social faculty has adapted to the abundant problems rising out of the new system. As an answer to some of these problems they have installed a Social Science Resource Center. Here the student can obtain needed class materials, have personal student-teacher conferences, or just study. One new characteristic this year has been the institution of large group lectures coupled with team teaching. This enabled both the student and the teacher to make better use of class and free time. The student also became involved in small group discussions on topics ranging from Greek drama to English sonnets. The English classes encouraged the pursuit of individual interests and study in specialized areas in the new Language Arts Resource Center. The Center provided a place for quiet study, reading, or individual teacher conferences. One of these involved the Math Department. Math classes this year were split into large group lectures and small group discussions. A new course, computer programming, was added to the curriculum. Also new was the Math-Science Resource Center for independent or group study. New groups were formed; others reformed: a few died, but most remained the same. The switch of leadership and responsibility from faculty to students gave rise to organizations dealing specifically with the problems created by this new student control. While certain clubs maintained their purpose of providing an extension of learning outside the classroom, others continued their traditional service to school, community, and the world as a whole. As a result. there was a dramatic change in the traditional organization established to cope with student demands. This year Student Council lost its monopoly over student government. Within two weeks, three new government agencies. Hall Monitors. Lounge Monitors, and the short-lived Record Room Committee demanded new power to govern. A new faction known as Student Power quickly formed to advance the interests of the members of these agencies. The most disturbing development of this sudden rise in student concern was the tendency of some members of the council elite to distinguish themselves from the rest of the student body by saying. We should have power over you.” Sensing the critical nature of the conflict. John Bowen and his band of bureaucrats stepped in to propose a constitution. attempting to satisfy all demands. Although much time and effort were spent in the necessary reorganization of student government, students failed to feel the effects of the changes. FORETELLS DESTRUCTION. ■ LENDING MORAL SUPPORT to our Warriors was the enthusiasm of the energetic cheerleaders and Pep Club. Under the leadership of varsity and sophomore B-squad cheerleaders backed by the enthusiasm and volume of Pep Club members, the Warriors soared their way to many a victory. To the agony of little sisters in gaudy get-ups. and big sisters, at pot-luck dinners. Pep Club got underway this year with the traditional initiation. In the fall, cheerleaders and Pep Club members combined their energies and enthusiasm in the organized March over Robbms-dale.” They also promoted twelve busloads of fans to raid the Richfield football field. These, along with the winter sports’ pep test, and the awaited spring lockerroom initiation helped to bolster school spirit at Hopkins. VARIETY SHOWS, pep fests. and half-times were made more colorful this year through the combined efforts of the Pom Pon Girls and Warriorettes. These girls attacked the problem of haunting half-times heartily and came up with some handsome solutions. Both groups danced to some of the latest hits with a flair for crowd pleasing. Under the student direction of Sue Orfield and advised by Mrs. Motzko. the Pom Pon Girls appeared at Warrior games as regularly as the players themselves. Their weaving purple and white brought pomp and ceremony to many Hopkins activities. Co-captains Sue Holt and Kathy Bock skillfully led their band of Warriorettes in a synchronized line-up. MUSIC GROUPS RING WITH HARMONY ■ AFTER ADJUSTING to the initial schedule alterations and conflicts caused by Modular Scheduling, choir, band, and orchestra continued to provide Hopkins students with varied, high quality productions. Each organization offered appropriate classical and pop compositions at Thanksgiving. Christmas, and Easter. In addition each staged a winter and spring concert. Other appearances were also scheduled for PTA meetings and special conventions. The pep band’s rousing accompaniment at pep tests, the choir’s trip to Augsburg College, and their joint presentation of Handel’s Messiah in conjunction with the orchestra were only a few of the many ’68 musical highlights. Ill 112 — CAVALETTES SERVE HHS CREATIVELY I A LARGE ORGANIZATION of Hopkins girls has an important purpose whose sole interest is the welfare of other people. This service society is commonly known as Cavalettes and was directed this year by President Cookie Stohl. The aid and time they gave to others included the whole spectrum of the human race. And AFS'ers were kept busy with their guests, while at the same time supporting Don Pavelka in Brazil and Beth Brown in Argentina. Another ambassador from Hopkins was Mary Hoidal who spent the summer in France. After getting into the swing of things with a homecoming float. AFS'ers sponsored a pancake breakfast where everyone had their fill, and an AFS Roundup which brought other foreign students in the area to Hopkins for the weekend. They also participated in an AFS Mardi Gras at the University. The students from across the seas this year were: Julie Picot from New Zealand. PICTURE 8: Russian dancers enjoy their kind of fun HHS CLUBS SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE ■ A MAJOR REASON for establishing several Hopkins clubs was due to interest in the extension of learning outside the classroom. Part of this interest was shared by the debate team and language clubs. For the fourth consecutive year Hopkins debaters captured the state championship and contributed to the already crowded third-floor trophy case. In a more conversational vein, foreign language club members were active in pursuing the cultural aspects of their various tongues. French Club traveled to Quebec and Montreal during Easter vacation while Hopkins Spaniards visited Mexico at Christmastime. Following their trip, Spanish club members ventured to La Casa Coronada. Latin Club attended the Guthrie production of The House of Atreus. and held their annual Roman banquet. Meanwhile Russian Club performed folk dances and peasant ballads. Craig Laughlin. 124 THE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM did an outstand- ing job this year, especially considering that they lost two of their top seniors and co-captains to illness. Tom Martinson, who would have been top man on the team, and one of the outstanding runners in the state, developed mono just before the season opened and was not able to participate at all. Craig Laughlin was unable to compete on the varsity team during the last part of the season because of an ulcer. The team was therefore comprised of underclassmen with the exception of Wes Dunsmore and Mark Ennenga. MIKE TURNBULL IS TICKLED WITH VICTORY. DISABLED TEAM STRUGGLES ON TO STATE NETMEN STRUGGLE THROUGH SEASON ■ THE '67 HHS tennis team with the help of a large crop of juniors and sophomores and with the guidance of two senior team mates, battled their way to a 3—7 record and eighth place in the Lake Conference. The two seniors of the team were Gary MacHalec and Stuart Fox. In the District Tournament the netmen ranked fourth with the number two doubles team advancing to the semi-finals before losing to Cooper. Hopkins also had three singles entries in District competition. The first two lost in the second round to Edina and St. Louis Park, while the third single. Craig Schepper. went to the finals before bowing to Edina. SLUGGERS MARCH TO SEMI-FINALS ■ BASEBALL AT HOPKINS last spring started off the '67 season by overpowering Cooper in a 22—0 shutout. After Cooper the team went on to edge out St. Louis Park and Mound before losing to Richfield. During the rest of the season they piled up a 6—4 Lake Conference record followed by an over all season's record of 13—15 won—lost record. After playing in the District Tournament, the sluggers entered the semifinals bowing to Kennedy after a close, hard-fought game. The Warrior's leading hitter was junior Paul Cairns who compiled an average of .342 with seven RBI's and thirteen hits. Bruce Hanes, top pitcher, fired his way to a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. GOLFERS FINISH WITH DISTRICT TITLE ■ IN THE SPRING of '67. the golfers of Hopkins High, under the coaching of Mr. George Reynolds, teed off to a District 18 championship and second place in the Lake Conference. Coach Ken Novak was especially pleased with this team, since they graduated seven of their eight players from the 1966-67 season. Hopkins had one of the smaller teams in the conference, yet only lost to three teams during the entire season. In the final state ratings Hopkins rated ninth among the 500 teams rated. At midseason Hopkins lost Paul Clement but regrouped forces and kept winning. The highlight of the year was the semi-finals of the district tournament before bowing to Richfield. Then the team went on to a come-from-behind victory over Bloomington Lincoln m the consolation round. The coaches from district 18 chose Ken Kephart and Bruce Dahmen as two All District players. All Conference players during season play were Ken Kephart and Paul Cairns. B-squad held their own finishing with a 13—4 record. Bill Prottengeier. was sidelined because of a severe infection, his fellow swimmers were pressured into a greater effort which won them their ninth straight District Championship. Highlights like Bobby Garnaas' upset win in the four hundred yard free-style at the State Meet prompted Coach Johnson to call his boys the most improved team in his coaching experience. Hopkins wrestlers ended the '68 season by bringing home their second consecutive state championship. Accompanied by only four wrestlers. Coach Bengston gathered 54 points, beating second-place Cooper by 11 points. Out of the four wrestlers: Steve Hylbak. Pat Marcy. Jim Sorvick. and Mike Morris, three captured state championship crowns. Pat Marcy won in the 133 lb. class. Steve Hylbak in the 112 lb. class, and Jim Sorvick in the 120 lb. class. Tom Lund, and Dean Draxton leading the way in slalom, cross-country, and jumping respectively. the team finished the season with a 7—1 won—lost record which earned them the rank of second in the Conference. This record, plus the added assistance of seniors like Don Berglund. John Draxton. and Scott Waterhouse, spurred the team on to win the district championship. Proceeding to the state meet. Hopkins skiers wound up in the number 4 spot. Dean Draxton earned a fifth place in the lumping event while Tom Lund’s spectacular performance in the cross-country event won him the first place medal. They've stepped up in the conference standings from fourth to third place with a 13—4—3 record. Iceman Pete Christian was best scorer with twenty-four goals and an equal amount of assists. He was followed closely by Captain Jack Lindsay who accomplished twenty goals assisted with twenty-five. Tim McNeill's eighteen goals and eleven assists boosted the team on its way to a season's record of ninety-four goals and ninety-five assists. NEW LIFE BRINGS NEW ORDER TO STUDENT LIFE ■ THIS YEAR STUDENT LIFE was profoundly affected by the new system, and many traditions fell. Old clubs and organizations died out. and students satisfied their social needs by forming informal groups, and hanging out in the Student Lounge (when it was open), or Art Labs, or in the Social Science Resource Center. Student government was also changed. As the Student Council, traditionally the source of experience in government, almost died, the hall monitors took over enforcement of rules, and for the first time, students were actually ruled by students. But students, as always. were not content to merely get an education and managed to make the academic side of student life a little different—even interesting. Most report cards showed a drop in grades, but most students weren’t too concerned. There was more to do this year, and not everything was necessarily related to set courses. The season began with the Homecoming skits famed for their great wit and satire, especially concerning the modular system. Tom Vesley and Steve Hylbak stole the show with what seemed to be the best gymnastics Hopkins has seen. The most effort went into the fall play. Sarah Quincey. Long weeks of rehearsals and doubt culminated in six record performances. One of the most remarkable productions was the Sno-Daze Variety Show. PASSING TIME PROBLEMS TURNED OFF BY SWITCH IN SYSTEM ■ WHEN ALL ELSE FAILED, the “wall rats headed by Bruce Garamella. and other interested students led by Sue Wong, stepped in to solve a problem in three days which no one else could solve in three months. The lights went out. and passing time became a new word in student vocabularies. Lurking in the shadows, the new police checked students for passes, attempted to prevent vandalism, and even sent some Warriors to their supervised jail. 344. Not all students would surrender peaceably, and a few arguments resulted. The girl winning the exalted position of Sno Daze Queen was the sophisticated Judy Thomson.
