The University of Minnesota, one of eight nationwide research centers involved, selected Hopkins as a pilot school for an experimental English project in verbal communication. The project's goal was to build a link of language study between all levels of education from primary through college stages. The secondary level guinea pigs were asked to introduce units on subjects such as discourse, linguistics, and persuasion to our English courses. The department was further distinguished this year in that an extracurricular advanced placement English program for sophomores was begun on an experimental basis, anticipating possible extension in the coming school year. Moreover, both the advanced sophomores and the rest of the accelerated lot were allowed to continue their annual excursions to the Guthrie Theatre. Meanwhile back in the classrooms, students again had the opportunity to view several important films such as To Kill A Mockingbird, Intruder in the Dust, and Macbeth. 21
