CARUSON THAT CAUSES THE RAPT OF JULIE JOHNSON. ROBBIN JOHNSON. GARWICK? •TM LATE. I'M LATE—BUT PERHAPS JUST ONE. THANK YOU FROM SHAKESPEARE TO STEBLAY □ necessary element in every Senior's career is Shakespeare's Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. However, English today is more than memorization and grammar rules. The English Department, under the guidance of Mr. Caruson, offers courses in College Composition, for those desiring to develop the skills of effective writing, and Survey of World Literature, a background course to modern reading. Also included are expanding speech and debate sections. Learning the persuasive skills of speaking, the debate team finds continual success in the yearly series of tournaments. The aim of the Sophomore section is to gain an introduction to further study. The Junior classes emphasize the American authors, reading from William Bradford’s report on the Pilgrims to Robert Frost's modern poetry. In the Senior year, a thorough study of English authors and literature is made, climaxing the course with the traditional research paper. 21

THE LANGUAGE LABORATORY IS THE MOST RECENT ADDITION TO THE EXPANDING DEPARTMENT. LANGUAGE, KEY TO COMMUNICATIONS Ohe language department is in its second year in the new wing and profiting by the added facilities more than ever before. The facility which has proved most helpful to teachers and students alike is the language laboratory. Here each student has his own booth and set of earphones and is thus able to learn the language through oral practice and hearing himself speak. An important change was made this year with the addition of Russian. The instructor, Mr. Trasseth, is also the new Latin teacher. Another addition to the language department is Mrs. Pesola. having two sections of German. Each language student is entitled to join his language's club. They center their activities around the culture of their country. The new Resource library with Mrs. Oyaas is rapidly expanding also. Students find this library with periodicals, encyclopedias, pamphlets, and statistical books almost a necessity while doing research. 23
