All students in the tenth grade are required to take physical education and in eleventh and twelfth grades the subject is an elective. Students of physical education learn to have fun. to be able to win or lose gracefully, and to keep their bodies in good physical health. A healthy body and a hoalthy mind go together. MISS HARRIET PRUSSING MISS LORAINE STEVENSON MISS PRUSSING ADVISES SENIORS COLLEGES AND COMPLEXES With 1,357 students at Hopkins High, the counselling deportment must always be on its toes. Its chief objective is to assist students in understanding themselves and their opportunities. When this is accomplished it is then possible to guide students in choosing suitable courses. In conjunction with the counselling deportment, we have a speech, a reading teacher, and a visiting teacher. Ail of these adults help to clear the path of the future for students at H.H.S. 15 MR. Speech. Debate or Survey of World Literature. Problems of teaching writing and literature were studied by the English Department, headed by Mr. Caruson. It is hoped that in the future junior and senior high English curricula can be co-ordinated to constitute a more unified program of study. English seminars may be presented in the future as a part of English study. Most of us remember Et tu, Brute! , the disciplined thinking of Jonathan Edwards, or Chaucer and When that Aprille. . . Also, some of us experienced team teaching when two teachers took turns teaching specific parts of an English .course. All these factors have helped to make the study of English interesting and adventurous. Librarians: Mrs. Dorothy Oyaas, Mrs. Betty Stenbeck. Mrs. Donna Johnson. NICCOLO AND NICOLLETTE MR. FACTORS AND FALLOUT Since the areas of science and mathematics aro very important to the future citizens of a modern technological society, these two subjects are very much stressed in the schedules of Hopkins students. We are fortunate to have at Hopkins some of the best high school instructors and equipment available. There are many phases of each field the students at Hopkins can choose. In science we find Biology—the study of plant and animal life. Physics—the law of nature.‘ Chemistry—the science of materials and their compositions, and Physical Science—the knowledge of nonliving materials. In mathematics we have advanced courses of Geometry, Higher Algebra and Trigonometry. WATCH CLOSE. MARY! R. V E R N ARMSTRONG. lytic . MR. RAY WEIDNER. Chemistry. Physical Science. MR. PAUL HEDBLOM. All seniors are required to take Government and select one of the other one-semester courses: Economics. Sociology or World Problems. Sophomores who take World History study the political and cultural development of nations. Juniors who take American History study the development of our country and its government. Some juniors may take Advanced Placement History, a course which merits college credit and which deals in depth with the development and government of nations. MR. JAMES JORDAHL. Eco-frcm'cs. PHONICS AND phrase:; Hopkins High School stresses the importance of learning a foreign language by offering Latin. French, Spanish and Gorman. One does not only learn vocabulary and grammar, but also the culture, history, literature and geography of the main country in which the language is spoken. Study aids such as film strips, records and tapes are used to help the students become accustomed to tho native accent. Language is an important aspect in the well-rounded education of Hopkins students. DENSON DRILLS NEEDLES AND NAILS The future homemakers of tomorrow who graduate from Hopkins High School will have learned many of the secrets of good management. As sophomores and juniors the girls are trained in a well-equipped kitchen. The kitchen has many uses— testing, tasting, and demonstrating. The girls are also taught the essentials of fine serving and the importance of good grooming. Senior girls are offered a special course called Home and Family Living. This course includes cooking, serving. knitting, budget and time management. The highlight of the year is a nursery school training unit. Boys taking shop are offered courses in Metal, Wood, Auto Mechanics, Electricity, Printing and Drawing. Their work ranges from drawing house plans and building stereo sets to building racing boats. TEMPRA AND TOIL The Art Department at Hopkins had one purpose: to stimulate individual creativity in students. This purpose was approached in two different ways by each of our art teachers. Mrs. Phelps' classes studied art through specific but varied assignments. On the other hand. Mr. Prel'wih' students followed a spontaneous approach to art as they created individual art projects. Field trips to Walker Art Center and The Minneapolis Institute of Arts have been a worthwhile part of art education. 24 MR. JOHN TESAR. Bond Director. CRESCENDOS AND CLARINETS One wing of our school is devoted to the Music Department. Students who wish to find a means of self-expression through music can participate in the a cappella choir or glee club, both under the direction of Mr. Gears, the band, directed by Mr. Tesar. or the orchestra, led by Mr. Brunzell. Each of these organizations meets for one hour every day. A course in harmony is offered for students who wish to study music theory. The enthusiastic participation of many students in musical organizations indicates that music is o worthwhile activity to pursue. MR. CLIFFORD BRUN-ZELL, Orchestra. MR. WALLACE GEARS. Choir Director. Gleo Club. Vocal Lessons. 25 STENOGRAPHERS AND STENCILS Courses offered in the Business Department at Hopkins help students prepare for a future in the business world. This year on introductory office management course was taught in addition to Bookkeeping. Secretarial Typing, Shorthand, Clerical and Secretarial Office Practice and Co-opera-tivo Training. Students who wish to learn the fundamentals of typing and how to make a carbon copy took personal typing. We were fortunate to have hod well-informed teachers and the most up-to-date business machines. OUR FUTURE EXECUTIVES MRS. MILLIE NEL SON, Nurse' Secretary. MR. J. A. NEUDECK- ER. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS As we approach our last days at Hopkins, we begin to recall the not-so-distant memories of our high school years. As sophomores, led by class president Paul Anderson, we saw our own Bruce Bakeburg and Bryan Magnuson on the football team, and Jim Wiig representing us in varsity basketball. Dianne Brandenborg was elected homecoming princess. At Christmastime we encountered a senior class determined to have the only Christmas tree in school. In May our girls were the first victims of the Pep Club slumber party initiation in the school gym. Our junior year began as class president Bill Anderson escorted Emy. Grant to the place of honor as junior homecoming attendant. In April we were hosts at the junior-senior prom, held at Oak Ridge Country Club. Senior year saw several historic events. Howie Kaibel became the first Socialist to be elected All-school President. Our A.F.S. barbecue brought in money to help exchange students living abroad. January saw the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new physical education and business wing. Our athletic teams wore the best in years. The debate team took state honors. Our years at Hopkins have been exciting and gratifying. We hope now, as we direct our thoughts forward, that our high school experiences will stimulate us to success in the future. 30 AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Exchange students from all over the globe came to Hopkins this year. The American Field service brought Anjum Saeed. Tutu. from Pakistan and Andy Gilbert from Luxemburg, and sent Marcia Wunderlich and Diane Jasperson, Hopkins High seniors, to Europe — Marcia to Denmark and Diane to Turkey. Ernestine Tina de Leon from Mexico City visited Hopkins for a month on the Inter-American Exchange program. A highlight of the fall activities was the A.F.S. Barbecue, held at Shady Oak Beach September 23rd. Many students and residents of Hopkins attended to eat a delicious barbecued beef dinner prepared by Mr. William Goddard, chef at the Anglessey Cafe, and square dance to the expert calling by Mr. Loren Benson, counselor. All had a good time and hope it will become a tradition at Hopkins. Tho purpose of the barbecue was to create a greater interest in the American Field Service program and to earn money for the students of Hopkins going abroad. Heading the planning and organizing committee were Mike Miles and Barry Whiteaker. This committee was formed during the summer by students interested in encouraging more eligible students, who feel they cannot afford the expenses of going abroad, to apply for the program. HOMECOMING 1961 The looves turned to red. orange, and gold; Indian summer lingered, and Home coming came once again to Hopkins High. Tradition was broken this year when tho bonfire was given up for a Thursday night variety show and coronation. A Riot of Hits from 1921 to 1961 was tho main theme of the show, featuring flappers, mousokatoors and hoola hoopers, and members of Davoy Crockett's gang who enter-tainod us in methods typical of their times. Roigning royolty in moccasins and buckskin dresses were queen Jean Rormon and princesses Marge Dau and Koren Cormek. Excitement mounted on Friday afternoon as the cheerleaders led us in a pepfest and the band, floats, and royalty made their way down main streets. The bid gome betwoon Hopkins and Richfield caused our V orrior spirit to reach a high point of enthusiasm. Although victory was not ours, ovoryone still onjoyed himself at the donee os all the colorful Tostivity of Homecoming came to a happy end. c-e-Cfe «t M OF Hit' ,U“ 'iS- Ti- nut E-iaid rjLnwg I r i _j ir 1. Festivities began with a coronation program in which Bruce Soltis crowned lovely Suo Sheets as the fairest of southern belles. The royal entourage included Kay Erickson, Barb Krautkremer, Sue Husnik, and Jo Remer. Talented students then proceeded to provide the entertainment as Bill Dodson, authentically southern, M.C.'d them through the festive streets of New Orleans. Highlighting the performance were the well-known Schmitt sisters from St. Paul. The culmination of our gala holidays was a formal ball held in the milieu of a southern plantation. 1.
