ADVICE AND CONSENT COUNSELING is the job of the busy eight pictured above, although not all are members of our counseling department. Mrs. Kirkpatrick's job was to talk with students as our visiting teacher or what was traditionally called the truant officer. Knowing her in just this way, however, is an experience most of us would just as soon avoid. Our able remedial teacher and speech clinician were often dossed together because of the individual method of teaching characterized by their fields. Often working along with these teachers was Mr. Olson, our able teacher in Special Education. In the counseling department itself was a staff of three and one third counselors and one secretory. Mr. Benson, the senior counselor, noted that the addition of Miss Stevenson as a part time counselor, was a big help with his large load of students bound for further education. Not only does Mr. Benson have the responsibility of being senior counselor and head of the department, but also he is the president-elect of the Minnesota Counseling Association. 21

EPICS AND ESSAYS THE Language Arts Department helped us by teach, ing us to communicate clearly and correctly and by exposing us to some of the most effective and classical communications of man. We were taught communications through all manner of interesting exercises in grammar, speech, writing, and memorization. Remember incorporating forty-seven recondite vocabulary words in o coherent hundred word theme - or. copying definitions verbatim from the dictionary and finding them corrected the next day. We were also exposed to a sampling of revered world, American, and English literature. Remember ... bells, bells, bolls . . Whan that Aprille . . ... let me count the ways . . ., until we were so confused we were forced to even think. Besides the English courses themsolves, the Language Arts Department encompasses speech, debate, college composition, and survey of litero-ture. New course offerings were being examined and possibly dramatics will be added as a classroom sublet. Under its new head, Mr. Chorles Coruson, the deportment has begun a three year curriculum study under the coordination of Mr. H. Anderson. The purpose of the study is to examine the possibility of offering o more uniform, coordinated progression of courses with more emphasis on writing. YESTERDAY'S DEADLINE WAS A SENIOR RESEARCH PAPER.
