WARRIOR published annually by hopkins high school, hopkins, minnesota IN recognition oi her distinctive con-tribution to the English Deportment of Hopkins High School, in recognition of a person who has through her outspoken manner increased interest in scholastic endeavors, stimulated controversy, and exemplified her concern for the educational improvement of her students, we dedicate the 1961 Warrior to Miss Rose Macemon. BOARDS AND BUSES THOSE students who trespassed into the inner sanctum innocently colled the businoss office were aware of the fact that that door had an awful way of creaking open and that the hallway leading to it was long, lonely, and dark. To those of you who have not experienced this we urge you to do so, although we're not sure if the business office would express the some sentiment. Behind this creaking door are the people who run Hopkins High and District 274 so efficiently. These are the people who accepted Covalettes' money and in turn paid the balloon man for delivering our balloons in time for o big party. Besides buying things for our clubs the business office had the task of paying teachers, improving public relations, ond making sure the ten schools in District 274 are in perfect order. BOSSES AND PASSES EFFECTIVE administration played a very important part in our education. With 1230 students and 65 teachers here at Hopkins, good leadership was essential. This leadership wos provided by Mr. D. R. Coppins, principal, and Mr. M. H. Ojolo, assistant principal. As students we usually saw these men at work os they issued detention slips, broke in with special announcements, or guarded the lunch line. But their work extended far beyond these traditional duties. Mr. Coppins and Mr. Ojala took care of the daily paper work, arranged the scheduling of the building and attended various meetings. They often visited classes or student activities. Since running Hopkins High is a full time job, their summer work will be here at school too, making out class schedules for oil the students, hiring teachers and buying textbooks. An outstanding project was the planning of the now addition. MR. MILTON H. OJALA, Awbtont Principal 19 LET'S GET THIS STRAIGHT: RICK WANTS RED, GARY WANTS WHITE, AND JOHN WANTS A PEPPERMINT PASS. MR. ADVICE AND CONSENT COUNSELING is the job of the busy eight pictured above, although not all are members of our counseling department. Mrs. Kirkpatrick's job was to talk with students as our visiting teacher or what was traditionally called the truant officer. Knowing her in just this way, however, is an experience most of us would just as soon avoid. Our able remedial teacher and speech clinician were often dossed together because of the individual method of teaching characterized by their fields. Often working along with these teachers was Mr. Olson, our able teacher in Special Education. In the counseling department itself was a staff of three and one third counselors and one secretory. Mr. Benson, the senior counselor, noted that the addition of Miss Stevenson as a part time counselor, was a big help with his large load of students bound for further education. Not only does Mr. Benson have the responsibility of being senior counselor and head of the department, but also he is the president-elect of the Minnesota Counseling Association. 21 MRS. JOAN BARTZ. EPICS AND ESSAYS THE Language Arts Department helped us by teach, ing us to communicate clearly and correctly and by exposing us to some of the most effective and classical communications of man. We were taught communications through all manner of interesting exercises in grammar, speech, writing, and memorization. Remember incorporating forty-seven recondite vocabulary words in o coherent hundred word theme - or. copying definitions verbatim from the dictionary and finding them corrected the next day. We were also exposed to a sampling of revered world, American, and English literature. Remember ... bells, bells, bolls . . Whan that Aprille . . ... let me count the ways . . ., until we were so confused we were forced to even think. Besides the English courses themsolves, the Language Arts Department encompasses speech, debate, college composition, and survey of litero-ture. New course offerings were being examined and possibly dramatics will be added as a classroom sublet. Under its new head, Mr. Chorles Coruson, the deportment has begun a three year curriculum study under the coordination of Mr. H. Anderson. The purpose of the study is to examine the possibility of offering o more uniform, coordinated progression of courses with more emphasis on writing. YESTERDAY'S DEADLINE WAS A SENIOR RESEARCH PAPER. MR. CLIFFORO BRUNZELl, Orchestra. BRIGHT SPIRITS EMANATED FROM THE CHOIR. FOLIOS AND FLUTES MRS. Phelps and Mr. Preflwitz of the Art Department characterized two approaches to art educotion. Mrs, Phelps' closses approached art with the discipline of many diverse assignments; one we may have noticed was the murals done by third year students. Mr. Prell-witz placed more emphasis on spontaneous art work; much of the year students were turned loose on creative assignments. Both teachers had students represented in exhibitions at the M.E.A. convention, at Southdale, and at North-rup Auditorium. Creativity of another type was encouraged in the Music Department. Mr. Gears put it this way: Music exists to servo and enrich human values, and to glorify human life. To provide opportunities to achieve these goals, one wing of our school is devoted to the Music Department. Here students may find means for self-expression through participation in the a cappella choir, the band, glee club, orchestra, or in the harmony classes, Individual and group creativity is stimulated through each of these. German students will remember her excellent English with both German and Oxonian accents. She spent the year with us as part of an exchange program which found Mrs. Nelson, our usual German teacher, in Germany. Spanish and Latin students were again offerod the full four years of language. Both Mrs. Hinckley and Mrs. Rozsio stoted that they were attempting more aural and oral work. Mrs. Hinckley's Spanish classes have been experimenting with a language laboratory os well. French wos able to add a fourth year class this year. Fourth year students have been speaking French almost exclusively in class and Find they can actually understand some of it. 26 MR. Boys taking shop gained a solid technical background for jobs or additional training. We were offered courses in woodworking, architectural and mechanical drawing, metal works, auto mechanics, and electronics. Girls taking Home Ec learned some of the skills of keeping house. We got a chance to participate in discussions on morriage and fomily life. The nursery school wos a special project which enabled girls to work directly with large groups of children. Students taking these courses received excellent prepara- (IEFT) SKILLED STu- tion for their chosen vocation or ovocotion. DENTS MASTER MACHINES. A PERFECT TV DINNER AFTER TIME. EVERY TIME YOU BAKE, TIME 27 (RIGHT) DO YOU SPELL STARRING WITH ONE R? FUN AND GAMES LOOKING back on our Sophomore year, we realize that our activities depended on the temperature. In the fall, since the weather was warm (above freezing! we went outside for football and field hockey. In both these games, there always seemed to be a concentration of boys and girls neor the area dividing the boys’ side from the girls' side, and very few anyplace else. We also noticed that the boys got to go back in eorlier, probably because it took them longer to get prettied up. About December we moved into the gym and on to the winter sports program which included swimming, volley ball, trompolin-ing, tumbling, wrestling (for boys only), ond badminton. Now the sexes were allowed only infrequent peeks ot each other through the door. We were limited to about one of these a week when an embarrassed boy had to run through the girls' section to bring down the baskets. As spring rolled around the gym teacher's fancy turned to baseball, baseball, baseball. So outside we went, to catch or pitch or bat or run or be an everlasting fielder. CARBONS AND COPY BECAUSE of the economic nature of tho world today, business decisions are common practices for everyone. We ot Hopkins received excellent training for the future in this area through the wide variety of courses offered by the business department. Most of us remember botching through three carbons in that elementary typing course, but many other courses were offered in the business department such as: Bookkeeping, Shorthand, Clerical and Secretarial Office Practice, and Cooperative Training. Next year Senior Shorthand and Modern Business will be a compact shorthand course for those who can't fit a two year course into their schedules. Modern Business will be a practical, general course recommended for all. We were lucky to have had one of the most modern business departments in the state equipped with the most up-to-date business machines and teachers. ANYWAYI MAPS AND MORES SINCE three years of Social Studies is strongly recommended for high school graduation, we're well acquainted with the fact that Sophomores take world history. Juniors take American history, and Seniors take modern problems. Three courses, however, with which we may not be quite as familiar would be geography, eastern civilization, and advanced placement Americon history. When we entered our first high school Social Studies class, we were confronted with a challenge: no longer were we required to memorize the preamble to the Constitution, make lumpy mops of every imaginable country, and read Our Weekly Reader faithfully. Instead of copying reports verbatim from World Book, now we were required to do magazine reports. Tests were made exceedingly difficult by the addition of a new type of question — the essay. Some students actually read college texts, or at leost carried them home at night. We should note that the illustrious class of '61 was the first to be offered advanced placement and the lost to rake modern problems as such. MR. FIGURES AND PHENOMENA IN our scientific world, it is impossible to live o day without employing some form of math or observing some scientific wonder. Lost year we saw amazing discoveries and rapid advancements in many scientific fields and more and more jobs requiring a math and science background. Our math and science department prepared students for living and working in this scientific age. Through qualified teachers and extensive laboratory equipment, we had opportunity to gain a firm foundation in this field. The Science Department offered many courses including biology, physical science, chemistry, and physics. The laboratory equipment for these was quite extensive and even included an observatory with a 10 inch telescope. The Math Deportment kept up to the minute in modern math concepts. As a result of an extensive study, they revised the curriculum and applied the newest teaching techniques. This department offered the student all the basic and advanced high school math courses. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES: BIU FLEE- SON, Amboitodor to Germany. PETE THROOAHl. Am-bauodor to France. WE were fortunate in having 3 foreign exchange students this year: Maria-nella Biroli, Juon Gromotico, and Ivan Serrano. Both Juan and Marianella, who came on the AFS program, are enjoying the challenges offered at Hopkins High. Cheerful Marianella braved Physics in a new language. Personable Juan took speech from Mr. Coruson, while amicable Ivon, who is on the latin-Americon exchange program, also took the challenge of a speech class. They all agreed that this year would hold many happy memories for them. PETER Throdahl was chosen to attend school in France, north of Paris, where he learned even German in French. Since his family wore expert mountain climbers, Pete climoxed his stay by skiing in the Alps. Bill Flee-son lived north of Hamburg, in the home of a doctor. His summer was highlighted by a trip through East Germany, Berlin, and Denmark. True to AFS tradition, both Hopkins exchange students mode many friends in Europe, and learned a great deal more by being there than is possible from books. 36 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: GARY MtCREADY, Vico Prejidonf, GRETCHEN AMUNDSEN. Trcojurer. GARY MOORES, Projidonf. EDITH LAGZDIN, Secretory. THE END OF THE BEGINNINGS AS Sophomores we were led by Closs President John Wiig into o whirlpool of unforgettable memories. Gretch Amundsen represented our closs during homecoming festivities. As the year progressed we found ourselves Walking in a Winter Warrior Land, the theme of our dance for Sno Doys. Junior Class President, Dick Seelye, paved the way for our second great year at Hopkins High; fair Indian Princess Dee Powell wos chosen os attendant to reign over Homecoming activities. Our year came to a successful finale as we participated in our first Junior-Senior prom at the beautiful Lafayette Club. Our Senior year we're still in the cellar; lockers on first floor, no Senior Christmas tree, and rumors of no skip day. All this we took in stride,- os a matter of fact, we consider ourselves the best Seniors Hopkins has ever had. Our redheaded Indian Princess, Merrilee Stenness, attended by Jeanine Peach and Sheryl Anderson, reigned over our Senior Homecoming. We've learned, we've laughed, and we're happy to hove been a port of Hopkins High. 37 JIM AAMODT VERIE AARNESS GARY AIRAKSINEN MEREDITH ALVIG GRETCHEN AMUNDSEN JANET ANDERLA JIM ANDERSON JANE ANDERSON JUDITH ANDERSON THE CLASS OF JIM AAMODT ... It encourages students to become interested in civic matters and to suggest ways and means of improving our school. Actually the student council is student participation in school government. Probably in a larger sense, it is a clearing house for student opinion. The main purpose of the student council is to teach good citizenship and, thus, the student council becomes a laboratory of citizenship. The idea that the student council is just another club, is a serious misunderstanding of its function. It is the only student organization which represents every student in the school. Therefore, if is the most important student organization in the entire school and needs the understanding, respect, and co-operation of students, faculty, and administrative staff. The batmen lost close games to Roosevelt 10—12 and Richfield 6—9 but came on to beat Mound 4—1. Lack of experience and disastrous injuries ployed a large part in the Warriors 2—12 won-loss record. LOUIS PARK 13-12. • CO-CAPTAINS BRIAN MAGNUSON AND JOHN HOIDAl DISCUSS THE LIGHT SIDE OF IT. WARRIORS EDGE PARK THE long weeks of fall practice began with an almost impossible job ahead: to transform a varsity football team out of a few returning lettermen and a host of inexperienced gridders from last years B-squad. After the first week of conditioning and fundamentals Hopkins scrimmaged Blake. Later that week both DelaSalle and Roosevelt fell prey to the Warriors preseason vitality. The Warriors, paced by co-captain John Hoidal were impressive losing to Wayzata in the closing seconds 28—20 and against Richfield 33—21. After a thoroughly demoralizing 54—0 beating of the hands of Edina, Hopkins fought viciously to beat St. Louis Park on their home field. For the first time, our defense led by Paul Lapic stymied the Oriole attack while John Hoidal sent fullback Magnuson through the line for yardage. Down 6—0 at the half, Hopkins stormed out of the locker room and sustained two touchdown drives. With Pat Connolly centering, Bruce Bakeburg kicked the extra point to climax a long season. B-TEAM BUILDS FOR VARSITY PRACTICE mokes perfect is the by-word for the sophomore-junior Bomber Squad. Under the able direction of Coach Bongston, the teom practiced with the varsity as individual players jockeyed for positions on the A-Squad. The first weeks were taken up with memorizing plays, charging the seven man sled and hitting the ill-fated Puckoroo. Most annoying to the junior varsity is the daily procedance of carrying blocking dummies onto the field under the auspices of the gold bricking seniors. The season progressed rapidly with the usual ups and downs. After losing to St. Louis Park and Mound the B-Squad rebounded with a 20—13 victory over Wayzato, highlighted by Paul Anderson's three touchdowns. The team ended a season of close games and tough breaks with muscles and experience. (RIGHT) PRE-GAME PRACTICE FOR FIFTY GRIDDERS. 113 (LEFT) WHO WANTS TO STOP A SPARTAN? A won-loss record of 11—8 shows that the bosketeers ore on the way to success again. We started off beating Mound and really squelching Edina 59—52. The Robbins walked off with a win, and Bloomington and Richfield squeaked by with one point over us. Even Wiig's 20 points didn't spark the team against Park, but Vanek's 20 and Trygstad's 18 knocked over Mound and Edina again. Tonkc was beaten again by 17 points,- Vanek sunk 22 points to beat Wayzata 64—60. Chaska and Shakopee went under easily in the two playoff games on the way to championship. In another playoff, Worriors upset Park 68—64 in overtime, going on further in William's Arena. The Warriors were off in all respects and lost to Mound 55—49. Hopkins had suffered a number of dose defeats this season and was hampered by height, but the spunky five have certainly shown that Hopkins is still around and beginning to show its head again. It came out the better in a number of close motchos, such as the first two games: Mound (28—27) and Edina (31—30). But Bloomington and Robbinsdole proved too tough, and Pork and Tonka each scored 4 points more than Hopkins. But all other opposition fell by a sizable margin, proving further that Hopkins' teams in the future will have fine potential. Among the top players was Orville Bower, who saw action in the playoffs for the State Tournament. Mattson also found his way to the Williams' Arena floor against Mound. Pilarski and Steenslond were two other hustlers on the B-Squad. II I 8 9 10 1 ♦ ♦ miLE | -HO YARDS ♦ rtnrc I ’♦« vwnp 118 WARRIORS CAP SECONO IN STATE MEET TALLY. TOP MARKS SPLASHED THE tankers wiped their slate of dual meets clean by overcoming all opposition with no sweat. U High and Park dropped easy victims. Edina, ranked far above Hopkins, was swamped by 35 points. Hibbing, Virginia, and the Miners of Biwabik, were all scuttled by a dozen or more points. The Lake Conference fell easy prey to the Tankers and so did District 18. Hopkins finished first over Park and Edina. In Pre-season standings the Warriors were ranked low, after graduating almost the entire varsity of last year. But coach Bob Johnson showed the tremendous reserve strength and depth of the frosh and sophs by extending a record of 31 straight dual meet victories. At the State Meet, the Warriors placed second in the face of tough opposition. Day and Snook took 3rd's. The medley relay beat their record of 1:49.3, placing second. And the free style relay with a 1:34.3, one of the fastest times of the nation, took a first. Once again, Warrior Tankers proved the mettle of Hopkins. 119 CAPTAIN GARY ERICKSON, STAR BREASTSTROKER. TOUGH TRAINING PAYS OFF THE dry land exercises are a real part of the Hopkins program and are at least os rigorous os those of any other sport. Pushups, situps, and wheelbarrowing, and a few miles of running prepare the Tankers for their grueling tests in the woter later on. When they arrive in the pool, Hopkins swimmers must be in tremendous physical condition sinco they frequently sprint a mile in one afternoon. Expert cooching and team strength have put our swimmers where they are. Many months and years of preparation and training hove payed off in the Hopkins B-squad swimmers' record. In three years they hove never been defeated. These twenty-five meots have demonstrated the strength and depth of the younger Hopkins swimmers. Johnson's backstroke, Pfeifer's breaststroke, Ness's fly, and Moeler's crawl provided rough competition to opposing teams. VARSITY HOCKEY PUCKSTERS BEST YET THIS year hockey at Hopkins reached the highest it's been yet. The Hopkins squad is beginning to distinguish itself; it had the best season in its history. Scvon wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie was a respectable standing for the squad. Mound ond Wayzata were beaten twice, and Edina was held in both games to only one point over the Worrior pucksters. We were leading Park twice until the last few minutes, and then they went out ahead to win. The best game of the season was against Bloomington, 3—2. Star Magnuson was named to the coaches' all-conference team, and Ray Wipson was given honorable mention. Among the sparking Seniors were Jim Leslie, Pot Connoly and Tom Auron. They were the men who kept the team going with their hustling and their all-around ploying skill. The B-Squad hod a tremendous record of 10—1—3, being helped a lot by the Quacks and Jiggs Gilbertson. The B's finished second in the Conference, behind Richfield. Mound, Edina. Robbinsdale, and Blake all fell to the onslaught of the Hopkins pucks and sticks. This certainly indicates thof the season next year will be one to look forward to, for coaches and players alike. A NEW SPORT DEBUT AFTER a year of planning, wrestling was introduced in Hopkins as a means of physical conditioning for those not ablo to participate in tne other winter sports. Perhaps the most exacting on the individual, wrestling demands all of body and soul to compete and win. Under the able coaching of Mr. Bengston, the grapplers begon practicing in early November. Weight-lifting, running and gymnastics exercises became commonplace for over fifty boys. Not only did they work out after school but were required to eat three hearty meals and get adequate sleep. The season proved quite successful. Opening against Golden Valley, the Warriors quickly showed their superiority in skill and spirit by winning 28-23. After dropping one to Edina tho squad gained victories over Bloke, Wayzafa, Choska and Park. Louie Colson, Gary Alexander, Brian Droen and Gary Hoehn placed in the district meet; while Brian and Louie captured third and fourth in the state meet. Hopkins tied for second in the conference tournament. Mike Ferris and Merrill Kempfert sparked the team last spring, and this yeor four lettermen will return. The Golf squad had an excellent season, finishing with a record of six wins and two losses. In compiling this record. Warrior duffers overpowered potent opposition in the powerful Lake conference. The selection of what to put in and what to leave out was a difficult one, and frustrating in some respects. We tried to recapture the highlights of the past year and set them down in picture, print, and artwork. We hope you will agree that the humor and liveliness of 1961 has been presented in all candor. Though we have missed many deadlines, we feel that the added time has resulted in a more thoughtful presentation. We hope that this book will awaken pleasant memories in years to come. 141 SPONSORS THE 1961 WARRIOR STAFF THANKS ITS SPONSORS WHOSE FINANCIAL HELP ENABLED THEM TO PRODUCE THE 1961 WARRIOR.
