R. Coppins. We wish you success in your future here at Hopkins High School. MR. D. R. COPPINS Principal of Hopkins High School OncJevse rv_ FonewaJui AS our paths diverge in future years, may former classmates long remember the tangible things: teachers, friends, clubs and sports. May they also remember intangible ideas: the conformity of non-conforming, the “beat generation, the spirit evident in all class activities and the “just a little bigger and a little better than before concept carried out. 7 OuA Day OS the hands of the clock reach 7:30 we find students arriving slowly, some meandering the halls and others fearfully trying to finish last minute assignments, hoping their teacher will have pity and extend the final deadline. At 8:10 the warning bell rings and the day officially begins. One can tell it is 11:00 by the low roar as students make their way to first lunch. The afternoon progresses rapidly and 3:10 arrives sooner than expected. But our day doesn’t stop here! That bell closes school only to open a whole new area of clubs, meetings and various activities. •AROUND THE CLOCK AT HOPKINS HIGH SCHOOL . . . It is a community center. To us, as students, it is a place ,where we prepare ourselves for the future, be it college, a trade, or marriage. It is a place where we enjoy ourselves at extra-curricular activities: clubs, parties, dances, and sports events. Above all, it is a place where we make lasting friendships and have some of the richest and most memorable experiences of our lives. •VIEWS OF HOPKINS HIGH SCHOOL . . . As one of these years has passed we look back on very exciting times. Homecoming was the first big event with Dianne Brandenborg os sophomore attendant wearing the traditional Indian costume escorted by Paul Anderson, President of the class. The doss was efficiently led and represented by the class officers . Paul Anderson, Kent Severson, Terri Soland, and Diane Josperson. Sno Daze was a smash hit with the members of the class. Of course the Winter Formol was the biggest hit of the week. Sports was a big part of our year. Many of the boys lent their talents to the Varsity teams. The B-team cheerleaders yelled uo a storm and led the team on to many victories. The girls are Sandy Latchaw, Kathie Johnson, Sue Sheets, Judy Uherka, Karen Pudil, and Claudio Morin. There were many other coeds lending their tolents in such places as ploys, Warriorettes, Covolettos, Cavaliers, Languages Clubs, and other clubs and activities. As we reminisce of our sophomore year we wish the Seniors the bost of luck and welcome the new sophomores next year. Sopftotno iei SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS . . . The club also enjoyed a Christmas party with records, talk and food, and a sleigh ride that brought laughter and merriment to everyone. The club also sponsored a school dance which followed a basketball game, in addition to which they entered a float in the Homecoming parade. TOMORROW’S TEACHERS TODAY T.A.: One of the most active F.T.A. clubs in Minnesota is the Hopkins High group. Through various activities the girls acquaint themselves with the many duties of a teacher. They take several teaching jobs in the local grade schools. There the F.T.A.'ers shine in the challenge to be on the opposite side of the desk. While they aro there, they get many chuckles from the innocent faces. For example, one boy in the sixth grade looked at his senior teacher and soid, My you hove pretty legs! Along with the pleasures the girls, under tho direction of Mr. Stally, hove ushered of the M.E.A. conference, taken a field trip to Carleton College, ushered at the P.T.A. open house, helped our own high school teachers, and heard speakers at their regular monthly meetings. 81 cy GIRLS’ CLUB AIDS SCHOOL ALETTES: If you happened to walk into the Little Theoter any third Tuesday evening of the month, you would no doubt hear President Peg Schmitz calling to order a meeting of the lorgest organization in our school, the Cavalottes. On the stage you would see Julie Rcagor with secretory book in hand, Kathy Jindra struggling with money problems, and Vice President Chris Johnson lending assistance. Surveying the group near the rear of the auditorium is their adviser, Mrs. Borfz, smiling eagerly in anticipation of o busy month ahead. The three hundred girls begin their activities early in the year by sponsoring the Homecoming Dance. Later in the foil they sponsor Sadie Hawkins and mid-year the Winter Formal in co-ordinotion with the Cavaliers. Cavalcttes is a social service organization which annually sells Student Directories and participates in the Lily Day Sole. This year they also solicited for the Community Chest. Throughout the year the Cavaiettes have joint programs with the Cavaliers. Among those were a Christmas party sponsored by the Cavaliers in which the two clubs caroled through Hopkins ond returned to the school for square dancing,- a leadership retreat at Lyman Lodge for officers and brigetfe and brigade leaders proved to be such o successful undertaking that it will be added as an annual activity; and three joint meetings with panels such as the annual A.F.S. panel. In the spring the Covalcttcs give $250 to the A.F.S. program and, together with the Cavaliers, a scholarship of $150 to a senior. If these abilities can be measured by the record of our debate team, this year hos been very successful. The defending State Champions won many of the outstanding tournaments in the mid-west. They placed second in this year's state tournament and second in the district National Forenisic League tournoment. For the Fifth consecutive year they won the Region V title, and for the third year they won the Mac-alester College Invitational. The debaters placed first and second at the Little Nationals; they were first at the Esthervillo, Iowa and Wattorfown South Dakota Invitationals,- and they won the Key City tournament at Mankato. The debaters attribute their success to the enthusiasm and cooperation they give each other, to the tremendous sources of information that they have ot their disposal, and to the espirt de corps that has been handed down to them from interested alumni. Win or lose, the academic skills that they have learned, the travel they experienced, the friends they have come to know all have made debate on activity to be remembered. HOPKINS' TOP DEBATORS . . . Working with Mr. John Englebart, Adviser; and Peg Schmitz, Editor-in-Chief were the Business Staff, Photographers and Editorial staff. The Business Staff, headed by Barb Mack ond Don Johnson started their work early this fall of soliciting sponsors, and taking orders for books. This year, the quota was broken by 200 books, for over 1,000 books were sold. In October the Editoriol Staff composed of section editors began to prepare for the first deadline. During the year deadlines were met monthly ofter weeks of identifying pictures and writing copy. Throughout the work of both staffs, the photographers Ron Larson and Mike McGinty were busy snooping around the school to catch unsuspecting victims and thus capturing unforgettable moments. If was the purpose of the staff to reach an ultimate goal ... to produce a yearbook which will provide each member of Hopkins Senior High with a tangible memory of his experiences here. The little sisters were told at this time some of the requirements for becoming members of the club. With apprehension and excitement they looked forward to o year of bowing to the wishes of their big sisters. The Homecoming Coronation and variety show were the first major activities to be undertaken by the Pep Club. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. Shonus, Pep Club adviser, and after the hard work of those involved in these two events, the coronation and variety show were a great success. Money-moking projects taken on by the Pep Club to meet their various expenses were concessions at football and basketball games, selling mums ot Homecoming, and an ice cream social given in association with the Dairy Queen in Minnetonka Mills. A flash-cord section, headed by Mary Thoringer, performed a a pep-fest and several basketball games, adding to the school spirit, The climax of the year's events was the Spring Tea. Fronk Wolker, Brian WARRIOR’S COMPLETE “RAINY” SEASON I HE WALLOPING FIRST TWO WEEKS of practice was followed by the Warriors making their debut on the gridiron of Mound. Thanks to the ingenuity of Ken Kehr, the running skill of Dan Betlock and Bill Smasal, and the agility of Denny Wendell the Warriors defeated Mound. In the second game of tho year Dan Betlock scored two touchdowns, one on a 70 yard pass from Kohr. Never-the-less, Woyzota, paced by Ray Zitzloff, defeated Hopkins 25 to 12. The following week Hopkins faced Robbinsdole. We were expected to show anything except spirit; yet through excellent protection in the line Kehr wos able to find Dan Schuetfe in the open for the first score of the game. Though Hopkins scored again in tho second half, Robbinsdole's power proved too much for the gridders. Injuries had much to do with Hopkins next two games os we were defeated by Minnetonka 39 to 0 ond Austin 54 to 6. Next in line for the Warriors was Bloomington. Ends Denny Wendell, Kent Houston, ond Steve Ofterstedt along with linebacker Dick Seelye led tho Hopkins defense which held Bloomington scoreless the first half. Bloomington scored three times in the second half to defeat us 20 to 0. In our Homecoming game with Richfield, the Warriors met with Richfield's sproad offense. Kehr was able to score two touchdowns thanks to the excellent blocking of center Bruce Johnson. Hopkins finished up the season in the rain at Edina, losing to St. Louis Park, 40 to 7. Junior John Hoidol wos the only Warrior able to cross the Park goal. HOPKINS 1959 FOOTBALL CO CAPTAINS ... Ken Kehr ond Denn.r Wendell 97 CAN'T YOU READI KEEP OFF THE GRASS. . . . Junior Pete Throdohl played his best game of the whole season os he came up with 12. Hopkins' first victory was at Edina as the Warriors won 51—50 but they had to fight off an Edina rally. Hopkins let by 10 going into the last quarter. Ron Vonek led the way with 15 followed by Ken Kehr with 12. Hopkins was off in all respects as Robbinsdale defeated them by 24 points, 65—41. Vonek led the Warriors in scoring with 12. Hopkins lost conference victory for the season came at Minnetonka as the Warriors sneaked by 51—48. Hopkins trailed by two at halftime but rallied to win both of the lost quarters. Vaned topped all scorerswith 19. After tho Minnetonka victory Hopkins dropped eight straight before they met St. Paul Monroe in a non-conference game which they won 67—27. Hopkins finished the conference schedule by losing four more before they defeated Eden Prairie in the sub-district 79—38. The Warriors ended their season losing to Edina in the finals of the sub-district, 64-47. Following the Minnetonka victory Hopkins played in four close conference games that with a twist of luck they could hove won. They include the losses to Bloomington, Robbinsdale, Mound and Edina. Against Edina the Warriors were defeated in double overtime. Both teams scored five points in the first overtime, but Edina was first to score in the sudden death to make it 57—55. Hopkins helped prove the superiority of the Lake Conference as they won two non-conference games by scores of 67—27 over St. Paul Monroe and 79—38 over Eden Prairie. U High, the first victim of the Hopkins team, was overcome by a 69 to 17 decision. It was in this moot that Bruce Rasmussen, set a pool record of 4.21.4 in the 400 yard feestyle. This was eight seconds under the stole record. During tho next two weeks the mermen overcame St. Louis Pork and Edina by scores of 68 to 27 and 63 to 32 respectively. During Christmas vacofion our swimmers met and decisively defeated Hibbing 63 to 32 and Biwobik 48 to 38. On January 13, the swim team began an in ond out schedule, swimming a Lake conference team one week and going out of the conference the next. Hopkins systematically defeated Robinsdole, Winona, U High, Austin, St. Louis Park, and Edina. On February 20, tho Warriors, led by Bruce Rasmussen and another Potential all-American Ralph Allen, who during the year hod broken the state record and set a pool record in the 200 yard free-style with a time of 1.57.8, plus two other pool record holders Mike Neudecker in the 50 yard freestyle and sophomore Cris Strotz in the backstroke, entered and won the District meet. On February 26 and 27 in the State meet the mermen, led by reliable Rasmussen who won both tho 400 and 200 yard freestyle and Ralph Allen who climbed out of the sick bed to fry and help the team, swam to their utmost; but fell just short, coming in second to Biwabik, 59 to 56. Leading scorer for the Warriors was Bill Gulbrandson with five goals and one assist. After the first two conference games Edina and Hopkins were the only undefeated teams in the conference but after that Hopkins dropped out of the title picture. Edina won the title while losing only one gome which earned them the right to play in the state hockey meet. Hopkins started the season with an all senior line-up with the exception of one junior,- this changed very little during the season. Dan Schuette ployed goalie, John Swon and junior Terry Olson at defense. Bill Gulbrandson and Ron Larson at wing, and Al Zwieg at center. Hopkins started the season with a 2—1 victory over Bloomington followed by a 3—2 victory over Robbinsdale. John Swon, playing from his defensive position, took a shot and posted his first scoro of the year. Although Hopkins was defeated by St. Louis Pork, Hopkins controlled the puck most of the game. Hopkins split the next two games as they defeated Mound 2—1 and lost to Richfield 1—0. Hopkins' best game of the season wos with Edina as they tied the Hornets 1—1. Hopkins drew with Edina in the lost game of the first round; up until that time Edina had defeated every team in the league. Dan Schuette ployed his best game all year as he made 39 stops.
