JONES Superintendent It is a pleasure to compliment the members of the Hopewell-Loudon Senior Class of 1953 for their fine co-operation and contributions for preparing this annual and for the many school activities in which ,they have participated. Scholastically this class ranks high. In athletics, music, and dramatics it is at the top. Every member of our school staff feels an important personal responsibility as a guide and counselor in assisting pupils to achieve competence in dealing with moral issues and in developing an adequate philosophy of life. We are proud of them and it is the sincere wish of all your teach- ers that your achievements will continue long after you have entered into the school of life. BERTON D. BIGI-IAM Principal I congratulate you on reaching this mile- stone of your life. To some of you it means the end of your formal education. In 1945 and 1946 many of the members of the class began taking les- sons on musical instruments to qualify for membership in the band and orchestra. In 1949 our basketball team was recognized as being the Junior-High Champs. We were progressing as a class into better students and were better qualified to take on the tasks of High School. Our first year of high school was a whole new routine for us. We elect- ed class officers for the first time. They were as follows: President, George Smithg- Vice President, Nancy Covert, Secretary, Rosetta Bricknerg Trea- surer, Donna Jean Meisner. As- our class motto, we chose, Today Decides Tomorrow. We chose red and white as our class colors, and the Ameri- can Beauty Rose as our class flower. Also, many of the students joined different clubs and became interested in athletics and music. The main event of the year was our Freshman- Sophomore Prom. As Sophomores, we elected the following class officers: President, Rosetta Bricknerg Vice-President, Arlene Bricknerg Secretary, Catherine Smith, Treasurer, Merle Amlin. Again in 1951 the big event was the Freshman-Sophomore Prom. Our Junior year was chucked full of projects and excitement. As one project we published the Scarlet Banner, and for excitment we presented the Junior Class Play, The Darling Bratsf' Of all our excitement we en- joyed most the J unior-Senior Prom held in Tiffin on May Third, 1952. Our class officers for the Junior year were: President, George Smith, Vice President, Joel Omlorg Secretary, Donna Jean Meisner, Treasurer, Betty Zeller. Now that we are Seniors, we look back and can feel proud of all we have contributed to the school's history. We feel this book will also be a part of Hopewell-Loudon's great history. We will long remember our last prom, the Junior-Senior Prom held in Fostoria on April Twenty-fifth, 1953. Now that we are adults and are to go into the world for ourselves, we are sure we will be able to contribute to the world as much as we have to the history of Hopewell-Loudon School. Time: 1963 I, Rosetta Brickner, as the star reporter of the NEW YORK TIMES, have been searching for an exclusive that will get America to take notice that we reporters are on the ball'l. One afternoon while there was a lull in the office Work, I turned the radio on just in time to hear a news flash. It was about the disturbance in Bascom, Ohio. It seems that there are two quack scientists who are building a space ship to the moon. I was astonished to hear the names of the quacks to be George Smith and Dale Brubaker, two former classmates of mine. Immediately I boarded a plane for Bascom. I believed this to be the story of the year. I insisted that I go along on this adventure. George informed me that there would be a need for a party of about thirteen. Since the departure was to be within two weeks, I began to seek these for the party. My iirst thought was for my classmates. I knew that all of them wouldn't be able to go, but I was going to give it a try. I looked up Arlene Brickner, who I found to be a private secretary for the Seneca Mutual Bachelors Society in Bascom. She informed me that she couldnit break away because business was going strong. As I was leaving I met Catherine Smith entering. I couldn't Hgure the connection, but after I explained my purpose, she was very enthused about the idea of going along. As I was crossing the street, I just missed being struck by a hot rod driver, An alert cop stopped the speeder and asked if I cared to prefer charges. I was amazed to see that the cop was Don Hulder- man, and the hot rod driver was John Steyer. John told me he had set the national speed record of 528.2 m.p.h at the Indianapolis Speedway in 1962. They both decided it would be very interesting to visit the moon. It was lunch time andAI stopped at Madame Creeger's Tea Room. There Audrey told me that she had owned and operated this tea room for the last four years. She had her own business and couldn't possibly go with us to the moon. We had a pleasant chat, and she told me that Carolyn Steinmetz and Betty Zeller were both County Home Demonstrators. I know they must enjoy their work. I took a taxi to the railroad station and when I paid my fare I recognized the driver to be Bernard Tiell. He told me he owned the Tiell Taxi Service in Bascom. I asked him if he knew where Arthur King and Richard Painter were residing. He said Arthur was a prominent farmer in Berwick and Richard has his own watch repair shop in Tiffin. I later called them and they said that they were sorry they had to miss this exciting trip, but due to their jobs it was impossible to leave for that period of time. While on the train, a pleasant voice asked if I cared for a piece of candy. I turned around, and in the seat behind me were Carol Rinebold and Marilyn -Comer. They told me they were selling furs for the Marshall Fields Co. in Chicago. Carol suggested I call Donna Jean Meisner and Marilyn Dillon. They are both graduate nurses at the Flower Hospital in Toledo. I did so because I believe they will be necessary on the trip. To obtain their release from the hospital I went to see the Superintendent. In the corridor I met Wayne Hoover, who had been a doctor for three years. As we talked, I asked him about Merle Amlin. He informed me that Merle had worked himself up to the position of Vice President to the Vice President of the Bell Telephone Co. in New York. Joel Omlor, he stated is now coach of the National Sharpshooters basketball squad. Wayne said that all three of them wouldn't miss the event of going to the moon for anything. While walking on Superior Avenue I noticed a sign on one of the buildings. It read: Nancy's Be-Bop Studio. This interested me so I went up the stairs, and there was Nancy Covert. She told me she had her own studio and was doing well for herself. She said she was sorry she couldn't come along with us to the moon, but she had to devote all her time to her studio and her three children. I asked Nancy if she ever saw anything of Louise Keefe. She informed me that Louise has been a Nun in the Order of Notre Dame in Toledo for the past four years. I was pleased to hear that a member of my class devoted her life to the religious state. I took a cab to my hotel, and on the way I noticed a very modern building with the name: Francis Brickner's Timber Acreage . I was' i'nterested in finding out if this was the same Francis, who in high-school, kidded all the girls. It was. He had one of the largest Tinker Toy factories in the state of Ohio. He was very excited in the idea of the trip to the moon, because he thought he would get a chance to introduce his product to the people on the moon. I told Francis I hadn't heard anything about Joe Shumway as of yet. He informed me, that in J oe's last letter, Joe had just received another promotion in the U. S. Navy. I had gotten in touch with everyone except Ruth Ann King and Joan Brickner. Since I had written up the stories of their weddings, I knew that they had their lives fairly well planned as to the future. This has been the most thrilling interview I have ever had, and I am sure that after I write this exclusive, the class of 1953 will long be remembered as the most adventurous and outstanding in the history of Hopewell-Loudon School. ,W gif? Only the 1950-51 team garnered more laurels. Their completed season's record showed 15 wins and 5 losses. This year marked Joel Omlor's final year of participation for Hope- well-Loudon. His scoring of 414 points Q20 gamesj this year set a new season record. Bruce King had the previous high with 337 Q19 gamesj dur- ing the 1943-44 season. Joelis scoring of 1004 during his four years of varsity competition also becomes a record. To me, as his coach and to his teammates, Joel's great ability as the leading scorer was yet overshadowed by his outstanding work as a team player. On many occasions he gave a teammate a scoring opportunity rather than himself. The squad reciprocated by an earnest and unenvious desire to contribute to J oel's scoring feats. From the squad, seniors Gmlor, Smith, Shumway, and Amlin will be gone another year, but their fine attitudes, efforts, and contributions in team play as qualities of their success must remain. T. H. Attica emefged a three point victor in a close game throughout. In anohther decis- ive game, the same team had edged our boys in a double overtime in league play. Bloom- ville, later defeated in the tournament, hand- ed our team their other league loss. Hope- well's final league record of 7-2, however, gave them a straight second place. Having gained the district tournament for their third consecutive year, the Chieftains met a highly rated Lucas team boasting a 19-1 record. Our team's one point loss was indicative of the struggle that ensued. In addition to the two Seneca County trophies gained, Joel Omlor was presented the J ack Hoffman Memorial sportsmanship trophy and the cheerleaders were awarded third place cheerleading recognition. We also Went caroling in Tiffin and Fostoria hospitals and visited homes Where people were convalescing. Sixteen of our members sang in a massed choir at Heidelberg on February 7. The highlights of the year were the operetta, Waltz Dreamv, and the Seneca County Music Festival held at'our own school. We also sang at the Baccalaureate services. Maximilian X. . .
