I Standing: Lorenzo Colvin, Harold Coppus, Arthur lones. Sitting: Archie Fruth, Virgil Kline, Paul Pember, Arthur Hoover The members of the Hopewell-Loudon board believe in securing the best lor the students. We realize that we are responsible for the teaching at the students the democratic princi- ples which we hope they will use as future citizens. We are proud to give our time and energies so that the school might have a well organ- ized program of operation. We consider very carefully all decisions that are deemed necese sary and anything which will better our school program is met with great zeal, VIRGIL KLINE, President ol the Board of Education. Six In a world of rapid social change, it is apparent that there is a need lor a type of education that will de- velop individuals who can think their way through the many prob- lems which as citizens of a democ- racy they are called upon to solve. The school, church and community are very important agents in the so- cial development ot a child. it is my desire that the Hopewell-Loudon School will always carry its share ol the responsibility in the develop ment and guidance ot its young people for rightful living. May every pupil learn how to communi- cate with others, how to co-operate with others and how to learn from others. A. SENIOR CLASS OF 1948 One September day, back in the year 1939, the lourth grade room opened its door to the students who were proud to cross that thresh- old. Most ol the students assembled lrom the one-room brick school houses spread throughout the two townships. Because al this it was a group ol strangers gathered that day to begin a school lile wnien was to end only alter nine years ol eeneeiing, Through the lourth, lilth and sixth grades, these strangers be- came acquainted with one another. These years passed by with a slow meandering way which seemed endless, One thing which was always looked lorward to was the summer vacation. Of course, when the hrst day oi the vacation came there was much rejoicing. We can look back on these years and remember Miss Good, Miss Erickner, and Miss Doran. The next year we were upstairs and naturally our heads were in the clouds, but we lattnd the going more dillicult. I imagine sometimes we wished we were back in the grades where we could Also at this rely an the teacher instead et ourselves. Then came the year we had all waited on. It was our tinal year betore entering high school and it seemed to pass slowly. We can very wall rememBer the pleasant days we spent with Mrs. Kelbley. At last the big year arrived, we were Freshmen in High School and we certainly thought we were somebody. At the beginning ot the year we elected the tollowing class olticars: Eugene Brickner, president: Mary ltuble, treasurer. Sophomore Prom the year that the going to lollow. others chose the Kinn, vicespresident: Leona Bibbee. secretary: Pat The biggest event ol the year was the Freshman- which was attended by almost everyone. This was members ot the class selected the courses they were Many decided to lallow vocational courses and commercial and college preparatory courses. time the members at our class began to take an Cctlve part in extra-curricular activities which Conslsled ol F.F.A., F.l-LA., Ylfoens. Chorus, Band, Basketball. Debate, Latin Club, etc. At the beginning ol our Sophomore year we elected the lollow- tng class otticers: Eugene Bricktier, president: Mary Kinn, vice-presi- dent: Donna lean Warns. secretary: Pat Huble, treasurer. The biggest event ol the year was again the Freshman-Sophomore Prom which was a great success. lust one more year to go alter this one. We went into the lunior elnss with the preceding thought irn- bedded in our minds. At the election of class ollicers the lollowing were elected to ollice: Frazer Leuck, presidentp Eugene Hoover. vide- president: Eugene Brickner, secretary: Mary Kinn, treasurer. We had an enjoyable year and the days llew by with great repidity. We had two big events this year-the Iunior Class play ond the lunior-Senior Prent. We enieyed working on and presenting our play which proved to be a success as we set a record lor the most money ever taken in on a play in our school. With the money made Irom the play we hired an orchestra lrom Findlay and treated the Seniors to o Prom, which was held at the Fostoria Womens Club. Now we were ready to begin sur linal year ol schooling. ln our hearts we have a deep leeling ol regret lor those who have moved to other schools or have otherwise been dropped lrom our class. However, we have a teeling ot rejoicing lor those who have entered our class lrom other schools and hope they have enjoyed our com- pany in the past years. our Senior year was lound to be wellelilled with many exciting events. Probably the most important were: making up the annual, working on our class play, attending the Iunior-Senior Prom and, ol course-graduation. Special recognition should go to Frazer Leuck, as Valedictoriang and Mary Kirin, ds Salutatorian. our class ottieers werex president, Bernarl Bouillionp Frazer Leuck, vice-president: Irene Brickner, sec- retary: Pet Rubls, treasurer. Now that we have linished school the group ol strangers who assembled nine years ago and became close lriends through the intervening yoars are ready to break nwdy lrom each other and tread their owxi paths. However, we all wish we could assemble lor another nine years. Lett to right: Frazer Leuck, vice president: Bernard Bouillon, presidentp Irene Brickner, secretary: Donna lean Warns, treasurer. Nineteen 'rweniy CLASS PROPHECY OF 1948 As I stood in my lab., iknee deep in broken glass, dropped by my colleague, Fred Scailel the idea suddenly struck me that I would like to renew my acquaintance with my classmates of Forty-eight. So, we boarded a train and headed for Bascom. We arrived in Bascom on Sunday morning in time to go to St. Patrick's Church and hear Father Hoffman preach an enlightening sermon. Wishing to rent a car, we went to Walliser's garage where we saw our old classmate, Gene, who, believe it or not was married to Roma. We decided to look up our old class- mate Gene Hoover, who was chief purchasing agent for the American Clay, and Gene Brickner, who was vice-president in charge of production. Mr. and Mrs. Brickner fiormerly Pat Rublei had us all out to Sunday dinner, and all twelve children are doing line. Hoover, as you may have guessed, was married to Mary Kinn. Somehow, Delilah got wind ot the three of us being in town, lFred has married Mary Alice Creeger two weeks after he graduated from Heidelbergl and she invited us to her wedding on Monday afternoon. Delilah was clamping the ball and chain on her third man. While there, we sow Irene and Mary Brickner and their husbands, Ierry Bees and Iunior Frankhart, respectively. We also saw Anthony and Charlotte Tiell with their three sets oi twins. It was, incidentally the second big wedding of the month, Leo Smith and Donna lean Warns having taken the vows. Leo is doing a fine job managing the Store, while Donna lean has a lull time job teaching the First Grade at Hopewell-Loudon. The reception was held at Meadowbrook Park under the supervision ot Mr. and Mrs. Lewis I-laugh. Lewis married Donna lean Lawless some years ago. While there, I stumbled and fell, but was caught by Bernard Bouillon, who was just leaving on his weekly trip to Kirby. As it was getting late, I was heading tor the door to leave, when I heard an inhuman scream. I was considerably disturbed, but Bernard told :ne it was only Ray Valentine beating his wife, Barbara Droll, again. Suddenly there was a shout ot rage and we rushed out, only to see Ray holding a broken arm. Apparently, he had hit her too hard. I-'red rushed him to Mercy Hospital, where, oi course, he received only the best ot attention from Rose Rahrig, who has advanced to an excellent position as Head Nurse. While there, also we had the privilege ot visiting Mrs. Morrie Houck fMary Steinmetzl and Morrie, lr., who were coming along nicely. Marjorie Burns, also a nurse, was stationed in Cincinnati Hospital, and so Ray did not get all the attention that he would have liked. On the last day ot our stay, the three ot us were invited to a late supper at Mr. and Mrs. Euky Walters.' tleannie Wyans, to you? and then caught the train home. BABY PICTURE NAMES l. The course started December 17, 1947, and ended March 22, 1948. Altogether there were 13 sessions, The course dealt with the overall problem ot Soils Management in Hopewell and Loudon townships, although one session was devoted to saving feed in '48 and one to Agriculture Outlook in '48, An average attendance oi 23.2 consisted of both young and adult farmers since there were not enough nights in the week for separate courses, Veterans also attended and received credit in their veterans training program, Probably the most outstanding result ot the course was the starting of a movement in Hopewell and Loudon townships for a Soil Conservation District in Seneca County. A district soil conservationalist from Findlay, Mr. Bradetute, was present at one session and explained the Soil Conservation District. Byron Gamble, County Agricultural Extension Agent, was present at one session for a discussion ot Saving Feed in 1948. The remainder of the course dealt with problems of maintaining soil productivity balance, rotationsg efficient use of lime, iertilzers and manureg securing grass seedingsg developing a pasture program and others. So to remedy this we have an orchestra composed of the better play- ers of the band along with several people who play string instruments. During the school year these people meet every Tuesday and Thursday the last period to practice. When an event Comes up in which they can be used, they are prepared to participate. This is cz group that can be tailored in size to fit the needs oi any event. Every year the better singers and musicians of the class B schools of this county get together for cz day to present a program ol music. These people from the various schools come together in a friendly manner and mold themselves into a single choir and a single orchestra. From early in the morning through the day they practice together ior perfection. Then during the evening they present a program to the public. These programs are always very good and give the public something dif- iererit in entertainment. Fxlty lour H www fff' ggi? L. With the cheerleaders leading the fans in cheering our team didn't con- cede the game till the last whistle. One interesting and outstanding feature of this season has been the way the com- munity and students have stayed be- hind the team no matter what hap- pened. Standing: Iay Rainey, Bruce Eberly. This sport does not require the teamwork that other sports do. However, there is a cer- tain code of distinction between men of the track and field that can- not be found elsewhere. When you have finished an event you have exerted yourself to the extent ol almost dropping in your tracks. i t Standing: Wiliam Fedsel, Icxck Smith, Couch Adams, Leo Smith, Ducme Norris. Kneeling: Fred Scdife, Robert Iardine, Bernard Eouillon, Robert Cool, If you finished with cx first or sec- ond pldce in the event you have on inward feeling of glory that con- not be equuled, but if you finished near the end of the event you have cz sick feeling that requires time to leave your body.
