X Y HOPEWELL MEMORIAL HIGH SCHCOL ALIQUIPPA, PENNSYLVANIA 3 we Vw' Foreword I I Dear Mom and Dad, Tomorrow is commencement--the big day we have been so anxiously looking forward to during the past year, My Graduation! I am about to step over the threshold into a new realm of responsibility, leaving childhood days behind and entering an adult world. Up until now, I depended on your wise guidance and counsel, but now I shall have to rely upon my own resources . Sometimes I get the urge to pat myself on the back for the things I have ac- complished, but you deserve a healthy share of the credit. The respect for dis- cipline and the appreciation for learning that you instilled in me as a child have helped to carry me on through my high school years . It is hard for me to express my gratitude for your moral support, prayers, and everlasting faith. Perhaps I can, if I dedicate to you, this my yearbook, the 1959 Viking. punt, Contents Foreword Board of Directors Administration Faculty Special Departments Senior Class Senior High Sports Underclassmen Activities Junior High Junior High Sports QM' , W--.....,,,M tn- Seated-Left to right-William Mook, Kenneth Sals- bury, Mrs. Opal Hilto Mrs. Lillian Curtiss fclerkj, Mrs. Ann McConnell,n,lames Brunton, Dr. Milton Eger. Milanovich, Michael Kalenak, William Gar binsky, Sam Taormina, Frederick Kelsey, William I. Pohl, Mark Hilliker, Joseph Bontempo, Larry Blaney Board of Directors The Hopewell-Independence-Raccoon Joint School Board is composed of a jointure of the school boards of Hopewell, Independence, and Raccoon Townships. The Board consists of seventeen members , seven from Hopewell and five each from Independence and Raccoon. Officers of the Joint Board are as follows ,-President , Mark Hillikerg Vice President, Joseph Bontempog Secretary, Lawrence Blaneyg Treasurer, Mrs. Ann McConnellg and Solicitor, Myron Rowley. The work of the Board is carried out for the most part through the aid and recommendations of the following com- mittees: Athletics chairman, Leonard Manningg Building and Grounds chairman, Joseph Bontempog Education and Personnel chairman, Mrs. Ann McConnellg Transportation chairman, William Garbinskyg Finance and Purchasing Chairman, William Pohl. There is also one committee governing Rules and Regulations and Procedure for the Joint Board. Each committee is composed of seven members selected so that all the townships are represented. The major problem facing the board this year is the laying of the ground work for a new building program con- sisting of more elementary classrooms and a new Junior High School. Supervising Principal As a man thinketh, so is he. In this new era of space travel and atomic destruction, it becomes nec- essary that you face the future with spiritual elevation. Happiness , health, and the better things of life are the fruits of cheerful, healthful and resolute thinking. Through your years of schooling, your teachers have endeavored to lead you toward thoughts which are high and which will give you confidence that the future is meant to serve you as well as others. John P. Milanovich Supervising Principal A very familiar face seen in the supervising principal's office is that of Mrs. Louise Donldn, She has been a part of us for the past sixteen years. Mrs, Rose Salay is a very efficient secretary, whose family is well represented at Hopewell. Her husband is a teacher and both children are students. .4 -Yflf Mr. John Mo:-ack, an important part of the office staff, is our new business manager. We hope he will be with us for many more years. Secretaries ,.:,,W,,.v -Q Assistant Principal One of the many objectives of your educators is to instill and to develop in you the ability to think and read critically, to work both individually and in groups for our welfare in school, at home, and in the community, and for a better future. In all endeavors we must be aware that for every benefit re- ceived, there is an attending responsibility that should be cheerfully accepted. Best wishes to the Class of 1959. Mr. Camillo Bonomi Assistant Principal Principal Another year has been com- pleted, and to the students who are graduating I offer my con- gratulations . I hope these have been some of the best years of your life. In the future as you look back on your high school years , recall the thoughts and hopes and purposes of your graduation day. Life cannot al ways be joy, but it need not lose the joy of life and the enthusiasm of youth. Good luck in your future life . Donald D. Kratzert Principal vw,.f .,...:,, i Ass' X . .. . ..... A Q W gg? Wil as assi A friendly face in Mr. Bonomi's office is Mrs, Curtis. She is a very capable person in many ways, not only as Mr. Bonomi's secretary, but also in aiding many students when they need help. Mrs. Smith, who is recognized by her biendly smile and ambitious manner, has filled the office of secretary in Mr. Kra.11ert's office for the past six years. 'it--1 i.--, Our Faculty In these days of re-emphasis on education, the students at Hopewell are fortunate indeed to be able to attend school where the student-teacher ratio is twenty- six to one. Twenty five percent of our teachers have served us before. They have been at all times dedicated and generous with their time and energies. With a high caliber teaching staff and our modern school building, the students at Hopewell have the opportnmity to acquire a fine academic foundation. Without their tire- less efforts, we would never have been able to accomplish all that we've done. As we leaf through the pages of our scrapbook, many happy and exciting memories of our lives at Hopewell Memorial High School are brought back to our minds. Let us begin with our entrance to the new high school as eighth graders. The year proved to be an interesting and exciting experience which was climaxed with the pesentation of the American Legion Award to Carol Wimer and Harry Fellows. The most outstanding event of our Freshman Year was our ggaduation party which was held in the high school gymnasium. As Sophomores we elected Carol Wimer as class president. Carol capably led the class through our momentous years of senior high school, Our biggest money-making pxoj ect was the Card Party-Bake Sale which, because of its success, became an annual money-making project for our class. Our junior Year was primarily one in which the class worked as a unit to raise funds for the Junior-Senior Prom. After many months of preparation the prom soon became a reality with Pink Paradise as its theme. Now we are Seniors. Soon we will end our high school careas and enter into our chosen professions, but befcre we depart we must not fcrget to expres our thanls to our sponsors for all the help they have given us. Thank you, Mrs. Brown, Mr. Hollobaugh, Mrs. Opsatnilc, and Miss DeHaven. Our senior class oficers, President-Carol Wimer, Vice President-Harry Fellows, Secretary-Carol Young, Treasurer-Nadine Richards, and Sergeant-At-Arms- John Jasek, have worked vigorously on the projects our class has undertaken. The senior class could always count on them for their fullest support. . is W-e Q A055 0 se FACTS AND F IGURES CLASS OF 1959 If om' 1959 Senior Class could collect their weight in gold, they would be wealthy, for their toizl weight is 8 tons. ln this tall class of a 625 foot 7 inch total, the 95 girls average 5' 3 in height, The boys average 5' 8-1l2 . The ratio is 1.1127 girls for each boy. Returning to the squad were eleven let- termen, eight seniors and three juniors . Team spirit and willingness to work hard characterized this team as a formidable opponent. The new head coach, Mr. McDonald, had introduced to the Vikings a new offense, the Spin-T. The squad packed a line with plenty of size and weight with a comparatively light but experienced all-veteran back- field. The team was fairly heavy but a little slow. The one dark cloud on the horizon was the string of training injuries suffered by the squad. Since he was new to Hopewell, Mr. McDonald was working under the handi- cap of not knowing what to expect from other schools in Beaver Valley on the gridiron this season. The nucleus of the 1958 Viking team were the eleven lettermenz Richard Fuss, James Harvey, Raymond Tomei, Anthony Zvonar, John Jasek, Albert Bell, Chuck Trembath, Ronald Fuller, Robert Shemer, Gary Gruber, and Robert Churovia. Fuller, Bell, and Harvey are juniors while the remainder are all seniors. Mr. McDonald was assisted by Walt Cleary, Ray Dempsey and George Hrubovcak. The 1959 Viking Basketball Team is starting their tenth season under Coach Michael Volitich. The team is a very experienced one since only two boys were lost by last year's graduation. There are seven returning lettermen plus a junior varsity squad. These boys posted a sixteen to five mark last season. The team 's lack of height is it 's only draw back. In the starting line-up, the Vikings have only two players, Bill Lechman and Jim Troynar, who stand six feet or better. If injuries or lack of height doesn't hamper the Vikings, they have a very good chance of winning the Section Eight Title. The starting five will be seniors, Bill Lechman 6'2 , centerg Rich Pesker 5'10 , and Kenneth Cain 5'7 , guards. Robert Toothman 5'10 , forward and junior James Troynar 6' forward. All are lettermen. On the second string are senior lettermen, Robert Churovia 5'7 guard, Joe Yarosz 6' forward and Ron Huchko 6'3 1f2 center. Rounding out the front line roster are juniors, Ron Fuller 5'8 , Jerry Greco 5'9 guards, and Larry Kuzma 5'9 forward. The nucleus of the squad is the big five consisting of: Ken Cain, Jim Troynar, Bill Lechman, Rich Pesker, and Bob Toothman. Yklkibfr' ,:'. ,-fi wi Row 1: t Coach Waters, L. Kuzma, J. The Junior Varsity Basketball Team was again coached this season by Mr. John Waters. The J. The Hopewell Memorial High School Band is stepping high in their new blue and gold uniforms-thanks to the Band X Boosters and to the Joint School District. Under the direction of Mr. Pasquarelli and Mr. Tolfa, the band this year pre- sented a pre-game show at each home football game. Mr. Pasquarelli, busier than ever, started a new dance band bringing enjoyment to the school and community. Mike Kavic had the honor of being band captain this year, and the Band Council worked harder than ever to the betterment of the band. The band received several invitations from high schools and colleges to play concerts, and traveled again to Westminster College. Another big event was attending the Laurel Day Festival honoring the Pennsylvania State Flower. The band participated last summer in the Aliquippa Jubilee Parade and Kennywood Band Festival, and was the host for the Lions Club Band Festival held at Aliquippa Stadium. We must not forget that the band also has a spring concert to present besides all the parades, pep assemblies, band festivals, and half-time shows. This hard working group of Hopewell Memorial High School deserves all the praise and glory that they have been receiving for afine band. Our smiling twirlers in action. llllidhdjvw-on a 1 B. Mrs. Opsatnik, our able sponsor, is busy with the yearbook. I Preparing a copy sheet for our publisher is Linda Hilton. Here Susan Nan is adding the finishing touches to our Vildng art work. Viking Staff We, the Viking Staff, are proud to present the 1959 Viking. Under the competent sponsorship of Mrs. Opsatnik, the Viking has seen many improvements. Our very efficient editor, Mary Beth Smith, and helpful assistant editor, Patti Figley, have done their best to produce a truly fine yearbook. Our talented art editor, Susan Nan, has made the 1959 Viking more pleasing to everyone. But the ones who really made the 19 59 Viking what it is are the hard-working members of the Viking Staff. The ones who solicited for patrons and ads, who sold yearbooks, who provided the various write-ups contained in the Viking, and who typed and prepared the material to be sent to the publisher. To these hard- working members of the Viking Staff goes a big vote of thanks for a yearbook we shall always be proud of, The 19 59 Viking. 4-'Q Row 1: M. Belich, G. Farrimond, C. Cunningham, E. Moy Day May Day 1958 was one of the most beautiful ceremonies ever held at Hopewell Memorial High School. The stage was artistically decorated, The girls of the court were gorgeously dressed in their gowns of many pretty colors. The whole auditorium was silent as Queen Gwen Markgraf and King Dean Lloyd entered, Gwen was dres- sed in a lovely gown of white and she looked beautiful with her dark hair. Dianne Elliott and Bobby Dunn, attendants of the King and Queen, crowned the royalty. The May Co1u't consisted of Carol Bishton, Becky Gorsuch, Janice Mann, Joyce Mann, Rose Mercadante, Diane Persutte, Sondra Smith, Janet Sovak, Patsy Speicher, Vallerie Wassler, and Harriet Wilamowski. Their escorts were Thomas Barkovich, Pat Bull, Joseph Hixenbaugh, Arthur Kanarr Ray Mutkus, John Peduni, Mike Pestilli, Donald Ross, liichard Showalter, Joseph Sullivan, and George Yanyecic. The Senior Class chose the court from the members of the class by popular vote. The seniors began the May Day program by filling into their regular assembly seats as a group. The May Court was entertained by a trio of senior girls and a trio of junior girls who sang. The band played a few musical selections and a group of Junior Class boys and girls performed the waltz. Susan Rush was the an- nouncer for the program. The ceremony was ended by the Senior Class singing The Halls of Hopewell. Many memories will be cherished by the class of 1958, but the memories of the May Day Court and its colorful ceremony will be uppermont in the minds of each senior who graduated that year. 1 DAY .o Mlssihfgg After many hours of preparation, the long awaited Jr.-Sr. Prom was presented by the Juniors in honor of the Seniors. Ciccone: es er, . at 1 YOU WY? Jet HOFIZODS- We, the Senior Class of 1959, have finished our high school years . We shall now go our various ways a.nd choose our life's works. Our footsteps may echo down the halls and disappear, but we shall never forget Hopewell High School. We shall always remember the many joyous and momentous times we have spent here. Our high school ex- periences are imprinted permanently on our minds and in our hearts. We would not have been able to appreciate these wonderful times however, without the love and devotion of our parents . They have, with the 1 l 5 E 5 i 5 help of our teachers , guided us and helped us to shape useful lives for our- selves. We can only hope that we can prove ourselves worthy of their effort. We shall never be able to repay them, but we hope that by dedicating our yearbook to them, We will be able to show them that we truly appreciate all that they have done for us . We leave Hopewell High with only one thought in the minds of all of us . To our parents , to the faculty and to the students who remain here, we know that, Deep in our hearts you'll never die . 3 E , 2 it --.4 E 5 A Friend A Friend A Friend A Friend A Friend Alexander, Frances Anderson, Mrs. Jean Anderson, Mr. 8 Mrs. Ray Anonymous Anneno, Mr. 8 Mrs. Pete Atwell, Mr. 5 Mrs. Smith Back, Mr. S Mrs. Andrew W.
