Within the covers of the 1957 Viking Yearbook are contained the precious memories, humorous and serious, of the events of the past year. But more so, it holds the hard labor and miraculous toil ofa working staff. Its pictures convey bright, gay moments, its words contain the prose and poetry of these moments. Because they are a part of our school, the junior high school has been in- cluded in the yearbook by the staff. We are happy that they can share these glorious memories with us. For the first time in the history of the Viking, colored pages have been included. The pages, including the Board and the Administration, are colored. We hope some day the entire yearbook may be in color. We have dedicated the yearbook to you, the graduating class of 1957. May its memories become fonder each time you read it. Which shall it be for the Class of 1957 after graduation? We started our high school career in the old high school in 1954. Our sponsors were Mr. Kotun, Mr. Voli- tich, Mr. Brown and Mrs. Williams, who is the only one who stayed with us. Our freshman year was uneventful, but in September, 1955 we entered the new high school as sophomores. This was the year we held the first social in the new gym. We participated as the sophomore class in the weekly assemblies, and most of all-who can forget all the parties we had? The ones at Danny .Iohnson's, Joyce Reed's, Mickey Vucenich's and Murph's, where Leila Biancucci dressed as Santa Seated from left to right, sponsors: Mr. Cable, Mrs. Risher, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Patterson. Standing from left to right, class officers: Bob Wallace, Vice Clause and distributed candy canes to everyone, Then we became juniors. C-aite Parisiannen, the Jr. Sr. Prom, was our main goal. We sold magazines, had card parties and bakesales, raising sufficient funds to finance the most beautiful prom ever held in Hopewell. 1957 has come, the time when we must end all high school activities and begin a new career. With our banquet, May Day, Bacclaureate and Graduation, May 28, we can add finis toahappy four years in H. H. S. As we depart we must not forget Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Patterson, Mr. Cable, Mrs. Risher, and Hopewell High School - Deep in our hearts you'll never die. The 56-57 basketball season was a try- ing time for Coach Volitich and his team with only two lettermen returning, Michic and Flem- ing. The job of developing players from new re- cruits began and from them came our Viking Five . The Viking quintet had before them a rough schedule this year. The schedule consisted often non-league games and twelve section eight league games. We also had anew opponent, Ambridge, in non-league competition. Since we lost four lettermen through grad- uation last year, the job of filling their shoes lay in the hands of new recruits and returning lettermen. 1956- 57 SCHEDULE Nov. 30 Moon ........ These girls in blue and white prepared pep assemblies with a variety of skits and band selec- tions. They led the crowd with their clever cheers and urged our boys on to victory. Last summer the band jour- neyed to Miami, Florida where it won honorable mention for its marching and playing at the Lions Club convention. The band presented outstanding performances at all the football games and pro- vided color and music for the contests. Some band members participated in Mid West District Band. V. 70772 It is the custom of the junior class to hold a Junior-Senior Prom in honor of the graduating seniors. The year 1956 was no different from other years in that respect. May 18 found the junior and senior classes enjoying themselves midst a Parisian atmosphere. Fullfilling the theme 'Gaete Parisian' the gym was trans- formed from its usual mundane appearance to scenes from Paris itself, This was made possible through the use of a drop ceiling, muralistic walls, a three dimension castle, a fountain spurting water, and other gay decorations. Entertainment was provided by Lee Tolfa and his orchestra, and refreshments were served by French Maidens, composed of sophomore girls. Many parents came to observe the results of our efforts. ay any May Day 1956, will be a long remembered occasion in the lives of Queen, Patti Placer, King, Ronald Markel, and their attendants. Ronald Swan and Marian Zidare- vich, Charles Schubert and Eleanor Mercadante, Darrell Kennedy and Marie Cunningham, Everett Mann and Harriet Persuitte, Ronald Collins and Marilyn Mann, Tom Butler and Barbara DePaolis, Joe Schubert and Helene Maravich, George Strother and Patti Efting, Ed- mond Barton and Mary Janet Falk, Tony Simoes and Frances Patterson, Rodger Turzak and Serena Kifer comprised the court. The Coronation ceremony was performed by Marian Zidarevich and Ronald Swan. Using the theme Moments to Remember , the senior class and the court jester, Mary Ellen Hilliker, were able to bring back some unforgettable moments of the past year. Row I, Seated: D, Swogger, D.
