Mirrored on the following pages are impressions of this year at Hopewell High which will remain with us and be re¬ flected in our characters and attitudes as adults in the years to come. It requires the earnest effort and hard work of each member of the staff. However, like any publication of this nature, the constant guidance of an interested sponsor is vital to the success of each yearbook. We, as Co-Editors, feel very fortunate in having such a man as Mr. Malvin M. Utleye as the Kaleidoscope Staff sponsor. There are many important matters to take care of and deadlines to be met during the year, and without his constant support, direction, and enthusiasm, this book could never have been possible. Not only has he played an important role in the production of the Kaleidoscope , but he is also sponsor and teacher of V.I.C.A., and serves the school in other capacities, such as operating the school supply store. This single page could not begin to express our gratitude and appre¬ ciation to him, but it is our hope that it will at least make everyone more aware of how lucky Hopewell High School is to have Mr. Utleye on “our team” Susan and Belinda seventeen FEATURES As our high school years slowly fade into the background of our lives, it is the outstanding honors and accomplishments of our fellow students that will still remain vivid in our minds. These students reflect the ideal scholastic achievements, outstanding dependability, beauty, poise, and earnest determinati on which earn the respect and admiration of others and lead the way for them to follow. These reflections will inspire us throughout our lives, to carry out our responsi¬ bilities as good citizens. We must learn to use these fine attributes as guides toward a more enriching and fulfill¬ ing life. Marilyn Hosea Mollie Vier Features Co-Editors eighteen nineteen MISS KALEIDOSCOPE SUSAN EMORY Chosen by her classmates on the basis of outstanding service, scholarship, leadership, and citizenship, Susan Emory was elected as the 1971 Miss Kaleidoscope. She served as co-editor of our yearbook, was active in the National Honor Society, participated with enthusiasm in her class projects, and was recipient of the D.A.R. Good Citizen Award. Her varied contributions to Hopewell High School have earned her this title. twenty MR. Excellent learning facilities and opportunities showing the desire to provide the best education possible for a student prove H.H.S. to be a school of capable and inter¬ ested administrators. Excitement and eagerness to learn seen in the face of a student mirrors the dedication of a teacher striving to instill an interest and desire for knowledge in each student. In our years at H.H.S. these people have become a part of us, and in the years to come, a part of our memories. Turning through these pages, each of us pause and reflect on our own fond memories of this year and others gone by. Every recol¬ lection is dear and we hope this section of the book will call to mind the contributions and impressions our dedicated teachers made upon each of us and the mold¬ ing of our lives. Deborah McGowan Faculty and Administration Editor thirty-six thirty-seven ADMINISTRATION Good morale among students is a vital goal of good administration; therefore the central idea of the administration in Hopewell is to make every action or decision help achieve a carefully chosen goal. Their supervision sets the standard for an ever improving educa¬ tional system that will help each student to learn more fluently in an atmosphere of good will. The good policies they put forth attract and motivate students who will work to achieve the goals of the administration. Our appreciation and thanks are extended to them for their guidance and counsel. Helen M. Thrift Visiting Teacher Frederic Doeg; Supervisor of Education Charles W. There are efficient ladies working here to make our office what it is and we willingly salute them. Our very prominent mathematicians along with their classroom aides, assist us in meeting our academic lives. The many branches of mathematics taught at Hopewell High School assist us in many important areas of industry, science, and business. Thus the Department of Math truly proves to be one of the best, most useful, and most fascinating divisions of human knowledge. Jack L. Stallard Joyce M. Pritchard Diane L. Helder Elizabeth C. Our fine teachers of this department not only help us in this respect, but they also place emphasis on the close relationship of social studies to historical changes and values. Through the efforts of these teachers each student can develop a competent membership in any community of man, whether school, neighborhood, town, city or state. Kathren E. They enable each student to examine the nature of science itself. Modern physical science, biolo¬ gy, chemistry, and physics are the branches of science taught at Hopewell High School; each helps to broaden the scope of our changing environment. We deeply ap¬ preciate the hard work and many hours each teacher puts forth to aid us. Harry E. Baldwin May Garris Anne P. Theodore Richard O. Beaudet Ann T. Kitchen Thomas Beahm Sarah M. For these reasons, our teachers explain the grammar, pronunciation, and reading of languages we choose to learn. With our excellent equipment a foreign language can be made interest¬ ing and exciting for all. Felina N. Roine Susan S. Bogese Irene Beauchamp IllMIt Frances B. Accounting students try hard to make their work balance; while clerical office students listen attentively as their teacher explains office rules and procedures. Adding machines and other data processing equipment add their noises to the sounds of other electric equipment. Modern equipment and many teachers versed in their uses and current techniques combine to provide excellent learning opportunitries to students at Hopewell High School desiring a career in the business world of today. Students not only learn the office rules and procedures, but also the appropriate office apparel. The courses of study in this department have been extended considerably to meet the demands of a more complex business world. Teresa G. Wickham Lucy W. Pritchard Thelma G. Clark Charlotte F. Martin Stanley B. Snellings, Jr. fifty BUSINESS EDUCATION Elizabeth H. Glass Evoria Johnson DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION Distributive Education gives practical training in merchandising and retailing. It is a fine way of “learning while doing”. Distributive Education gives the student a background that will enable him to adjust in the world of work, which is the basis of our industrial soci¬ ety. Our Distributive Educators help many of the students find work in many stores where they can actually experience specific jobs. The Distributive Education Department at Hopewell High School can be compared to an arrow that points to show direction, the direction to a more promising future. This department deals with the buying, distributing, and merchandising of all types of goods. It is numbered among the four cooperative programs between the school and the business community offered at Hopewell High. Our thanks is extended to these teachers for their countless efforts to make this program a continued success. John W. Porter, Jr. Ellen R. Carlon fifty-one INDUSTRIAL COOPERATIVE TRAINING Industrial Cooperative Training is a pro¬ gram which provides vocational training op¬ portunities for juniors and seniors. The trade and industrial establishments in the commu¬ nity furnish part-time work or employment and training to students during the school year. At the same time the school furnishes the technical subject matter, which is related to the jobs. The coordinator acts as an aide between the job and school. The jobs play the part of a laboratory whereby the students learn by doing. More than sixty-five percent of these students are now employed as full time workers in their own profession. HOME ECONOMICS Through the excellent guidance of these qualified teachers, students are given the op¬ portunity to learn the basics of being a home¬ maker. Included in this course are classes in both cooking and sewing. Ruth Hicks Malvin M. Utleye Sue M. Leviner Ethel B. Rogers fifty-two PHYSICAL EDUCATION Our physical educators regard sportsmanship, fair play, and social adjustment as necessary parts of any physical education program. They allow large groups of energetic girls to participate in vigorous physical action, as well as boys. These fine teachers strive to de¬ velop not only our physical health, but our mental health as well. Each item taught in our Physical Educa¬ tion department helps to steer each student toward becoming a better citizen. Jack A. Mullins Pama L. Hanzlik William H. Littlepage Earlene D. Lang Martha A. Bozarth fifty-three MUSIC DEPARTMENT Because of the excellent band directors and choral director, Hopewell High School may justly boast of its fine music department. Many hard hours of work go into performances by the choirs and bands. This year the music department has been enlarged by the addition of several new classes, such as a new class for the stage band, and a new class for the concert band. In this class the student learns more about the classical phases of music. Students in Glee Club find this class both interesting and rewarding. It enables them to broaden their knowlwdge of music, while at the same time they can display their different abilities and talents. The choirs, as well as the bands help promote school spirit through assemblies and pep rallies. Madeline S. Atkins ART DEPARTMENT Our fine Art Department consists of teachers who, through their artistic abilities, kindle and assist the student’s desire to ultimately display his emotions, via his own skill on canvas. A thorough study of art ap¬ preciation and its history is taught in this department. Truly the Art Department aids us in developing a talent which will remain with us for many years. William Cox Elizabeth P. Taylor fifty-four INDUSTRIAL ARTS With the assistance of our hard working teachers, the Industri¬ al Arts program at Hopewell High School is continually growing with new equipment and new students who are seeking careers in fields such as woodworking and mechanical drawing. Because of the many hours of work and assistance these teach¬ ers give to their students, and because of the modern equipment, the Industrial Arts Department is one of the best equipped and staffed departments in the surrounding area. Philip Redman Frederick A. Woehr Walter Daggett TRADE PREPARATORY Melvin E. Cline Glenn C. Myrick As its name designates, the Trade Preparatory Department gives excellent starts to students interested in trades such as electronics, machine shop, power mechanics, graphic arts, and others. Through the assistance of these fine teachers each student is able to choose the ca¬ reer best suited for him, and work to excel in it. The Trade Preparatory Department at Hopewell High School qualifies each student to better fit into the world of work. Class activities leave fond remembrances of hard work and worthy rec¬ ognition: the thrill of making the first homecoming float, the exhaustion after a powder puff game, and the surge of school spirit which engulfs the student. Looking back, we relish the years that Hopewell High has dominated in football. Now, H.H.S. is feared as the most potent team in basketball. Hopewell teams have always been at their best and have gained state-wide recognition. Its skilled athletes, its administration’s strong support, its invalu¬ able coaches, and most of all its loyal fans and students who exhibit their great school spirit have earned H.H.S. the right to chant, “We’re No. 1!” However, we must also shine some light on the future. We must continue to show our sportsmanship. We must learn to savor the ecstasy of victory while tasting the agony of defeat. As members of one of Hopewell High School’s most active organizations, they are recognized as the leaders of tomorrow. one hundred seventy-one CHESS CLUB Formed three years ago, the Chess Club incorporates the challenge of mental activity within an informal atmosphere of learning. Anyone who is in¬ terested in chess is encouraged to join the club, led this year by Pat White, pres¬ ident, shown here matching wits against Chris Strosnider. Meetings are held every Monday afternoon in the classroom of the club’s sponsor, Mrs. Furr. “The chess¬ board is the world, the pieces are the phenomena of the uni¬ verse.” irS r ° : . The year was a vintage one for the Ole Blue Players. “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” was a smashing success, directed by Haney Fayed and produced by Mrs. W.E. Ward. The rollicking, light¬ hearted comedy, which also had its tender moments, twice received standing ovations. The leading characters were Milton Chappell, Eddie; Bob Hoover, Tom Corbett (“Eddie’s Father”); Karen Kriegler, Elizabeth; Kathy Easterling, Rita; Tom Henry, Norm; Sheila Mitchell, Dolly; and Annette Watts, Mrs. Masters. Audiences will find it hard to forget such lines as: “Ask me, quick, before my cleaning lady gets back from the movies!” In the spring, the annual District One-Act Play Festival was the proving ground for yet another production. October’s Halloween Ball was the scene for the crowning of Hal¬ loween Oueen Connie Johnston. Her court included runners-up Debbie Kudelka, Kathy Easterling, and Karen Kriegler. It was a sensationally successful year for the members, who proved once again that acting is their tour de force. Other active members of the 1970-1971 Forensic Society who were absent when the picture was taken are Larry Katz, Bettie Wash¬ ington, Arthur Stables, and Davine White. In the ’70-71 debating season, the members of the debating team pursued issues relating to the current controversial issue of the pollution of our physical environment. On November 14, the club held its first Novice Debate Tournament at Hopewell High School. Ten out-of-town teams participated, giving our own novices a chance to try their wings for the first time. Standing at the familiar podium in Mrs. Farnsworth’s speech classroom are the officers of the Forensic Society: Phyllis H. Farnsworth, sponsor; Eddie Crews, treasurer; Joe McMillan, president; and Phyllis McBee, corresponding secretary. The debaters meet weekly. The first two months of the school year are spent in learning the basic techniques of good debating; the remainder of the year is devoted to dem¬ onstration debates. The debaters attended workshops and invitational tournaments at various colleges, prior to the Central District Debate Tournament, held in April. 1970’s winner of the Voice of Democracy script-writing contest was Eddie Crews, pictured above at left. Last year the Varsity Debaters, Rich¬ ard Lampman, Eddie Crews, Joe McMillan, and Larry Katz (pictured center, below) won the Central District Debate Championship, held at nearby John Tyler Community College. This qualified them to enter the State Debate Tournament. one hundred seventy-four F.B.L.A Rrst row: Terry Moore, Linda Harvey, Patti Livingston, Valerie Armstrong, Debbie Blackwell, Jo Ann Snyder, Linda Joyce, Christie Aderholt and Rita Heathcock. The harmony of the choir, originality of the Magpipes, precision marching shown by our band, and accomplishments of our Kaleidoscope Staff all reflect the desire of students to become involved. They are featured in the Senior Choir Christmas Concert as well as the annual Spring Concert. They have appeared before various local organizations including Woman’s Clubs, Kiwanis, and Garden Clubs. In addition to performing at school and community functions, the group has appeared on T.V., and stage, including a performance at Dogwood Dell, and also at the Mosque. The student director this year is Kathy Easterling. Kathy is also choreographer for the group. Milton Chappell is the accompanist. one hundred ninety-one LIBRARY STAFF Left to Right: Susan Stancil, Cynthia Moore, Carlotta Nesbitt, Joan Nemetz Standing: Ken Muller, Bernie Cobb. Those boys and girls who are especially interested in this field of work, make up the Library Staff. There are only two requirements to become a member of the staff. They are: One: a student must have a study hall and two: he must have been on the honor roll the previous year. The staff is a great help to the librari¬ ans. They learn to perform most of the routine duties of a librarian. They work both before and after school and during their study hall to help keep the library orderly for the benefit of all the students. one hundred ninety-two Sponsor: Miss Carter Norton ADVOCATE STAFF First Row: Arme Miller, Joanne Wiggins, Ban Rafey, Donna Rigney, Brenda Pelham, Davine White. It’s purpose is to provide a responsible method of informing students on matters which concern them. It began with the interests of two students, Joe McMillian and Richard Lampman, who worked closely with Mr. Sullins and Joan Jerrell to get the paper established. Even though each must solicit ads and yearbooks, assist in taking underclass pictures, help organize a certain section of the book, identify pictures and distribute the new yearbooks in the spring, all of the members on the staff feel their efforts are well payed for. Not only do they receive experience but they also enjoy being part of one of the most important achievements of the school year. We devote this section of the Kaleido¬ scope to the people, who, behind the scenes, contribute their time, facilities, and funds to the betterment of H.H.S. and her students. Many new advertisers have moved into the area; a few old friends have left. We are deeply thanMu to the following merchants and businesses for tr.en generous and loyal support of our school and its students.
