MUSIC DEPARTMENT The Blue and Gold Marching Band of Hopewell High this year added many accomplishments to its credit. New half-time shows thrilled the fans at the home football games. The stage bands also continued to improve the quality of their music. All this is due mainly to the excellent band directors we have. H. George Taylor Sherwood Conservatory, B. of Music, Marshall University, University of Wisconsin, Eastern Kentucky University, William and Mary, Morehead State University. Albert W. Thweatt Elizabeth City State College, B.S. R. Douglas Utt University of Cincinnati, B.M., V.C.U., B.M.E. Above: Mr. Thweatt instructs the junior band members. Below: Mrs. Atkins joins in singing with the Magpipes. Madeline S. Atkins William and Mary, B. of Music Ed., University of Virginia, Madison. The Senior Choir at Hopewell High improves every year under the direction of Mrs. Atkins. The Magpipes, composed of Senior Choir members, sing popular songs while adding action to them. The Glee Club allows everyone to further their ambitions in music. Musical history is just as important as the actual singing and is enjoyed just as much by the students. The choirs are just another example of the excellent quality of instruction here at Hopewell High.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Joan Griggs University of Colorado, University of Mexico, University of Southern California, B.A., California State College. In the modern world of today, knowledge of more than one language is important. To keep up with the rapid global communication trends, the Foreign Language Department sees to it that every student draws as much from his foreign language as possible. Four years of French and Spanish and two years of Latin are offered in the general curriculum. The language lab with its tape facilities is a valuable aid to all concerned. Devoted teachers unselfishly give of themselves to students in teaching grammar, reading, and speaking the language of the student ' s choice.
