DISTRICT PRESIDENT Eddie Smiley was elected by his classmates last spring as a District VI Board Member. At the convention, he was nominated and elected as the District President. Community OhConors BOY OF THE YEAR Bobby Poole Bobby Poole was chosen the Optimist Club’s Outstanding Boy of the Year because of his fine character, scholarship, leadership, delightful per¬ sonality, and his readiness to serve his friends, church, and school . Because of his activity in numer¬ ous organizations in both school and church and his contributions to them through his leadership, sports¬ manship, and service, Bobby is very deserving of this honor. GIRL OF THE YEAR Barbara Banvard The Optimist Club of Hopewell chose Barbara as the Outstanding Girl of the Year. Barbara earned this highly coveted honor by the service she has so readily given to the school, to her church, and the numerous activities which she takes part in. Her excellent character, delightful personality, scholar¬ ship, leadership, and active participation have earned this very worthy honor for her. 23 Our H.H.S. cheerleaders encouraged much school spirit and enthusiasm throughout the football season. New eighth graders lost no time in getting into the “swing of things” at H.H.S. At our annual Halloween Ball, amidst all the fun, In September of 1965, the S.C.A. selected Bill a queen was selected to reign throughout the Kapsidelis as the first Student of the Week. This school year. _ was just one of the new S.C.A. objectives. Several times throughout the year a committee from the S.C.A. selected a Banner Room. This promoted school spirit by encouraging the students to take more pride in their school. The student body once again gathers for a pep rally to promote school spirit for the football season. 24 Jimmy Buchanan, a dear friend to all who knew him, had been a loyal fan to the Hopewell Blue Devils for many years. The Senior Class float took first place at the 1965 Homecoming. i rwt i | I - One of the highlights of our school year was the production of “Camelot” by the drama, music, and art departments of Hopewell High. 25 There is nothing like the excitement of the H.H.S. basketball games — even before the game begins! Many times throughout the school year the students at H.H.S. drill in case of fire. Mr. Sober, an H.H.S. Government teacher and S.C.A. sponsor, participated in our annual Christ¬ mas Assembly. Students who have shown outstanding ability in character, leadership, and service, were tapped for the National Honor Society. The Tri-Hi-Y members at H.H.S. support and pro¬ mote school functions by having a coat check. As in previous years, the Seniors caroling through the halls of H.H.S. in December was an impressive occasion. 26 The traffic problem at H.H.S. greatly improved as the new rules were enforced. Needless to say, track has become a more prominent sport at H.H.S. and we, the students, are sure proud of our team. Though baseball is the last athletic sport of the year, it is not the least in importance. “Oh, happy day—we passed!” An exciting day as everyone gathers to show off their report cards ending a year of hard work. “Who will the Co-Editors be?” This was the most exciting moment of the 1965 Kaleidoscope As¬ sembly. 27 Now the halls are quiet, and to many of us, they will long be remembered; for they will never be looked upon again by some. pups Ui(lose who {each as, guide as, ancf direct us deserve oar speciai thanhs. Coach Stallard presents Butch Altman with the most valu¬ able player trophy. The 1965 Blue Devils are a team that will stand out in the hearts and minds of all who observed their season. Much was expected of these boys, and much did they give. None of us will ever forget those rainy Friday nights when the Devils clashed with and usually overcame the top teams of the Cen¬ tral District. In that thrilling first game against Highland Springs, the team proved their worth with an 18 to 0 victory. One of their biggest moments came when they soundly whipped the Crimson Wave, a rugged and fine football team. The Lane game, one of the Devil’s best and the last game of the season, was a loss according to the scoreboard and rules df play, but a win as far as the team and their coaches were concerned — the prize being the knowledge of a job well done. The Devils fought all the way, holding their own against a team undefeat¬ ed in 37 games. It seemed that their fighting spirit just’could not be broken. Perhaps it was this spirit added to their superior playing ability that made the 1965 Blue Devils such a great and memorable team. Co-Captains Mickey Thompson and Butch Altman are proud of their awards. Mickey Thompson—Best Tackier. Butch Altman—Rotarian’s President Award. SPONSOR The Student Co-operative As¬ sociation is the main central gov¬ ernment of Hopewell High Scho ol. Each homeroom elects a repre¬ sentative to serve the Council. This year, a new policy was in- acted—meetings every two weeks instead of every week. With the aid of our energetic sponsor, Mr. Sober, and the outstanding lead¬ ership of our president, Miss Joyce Mitchell, the S. C. A. has carried many successful projects throughout the school year. Not only is a representative a member of the Council, but he also serves on a special committee of the S. C. A. The chairmen of these committees are shown above. The meetings of the special commit¬ tees are held every week to enable the Council to meet only every two weeks. PRESIDENT MR. JERRELL SOBER JOYCE MITCHELL 189 Activities During the Thanksgiving Assembly, Mr. Sober spoke on our country and democracy to the Student Body. Also at the Thanksgiving Assembly, Miss Joyce Mitchell, our SCA president, was crowned “Miss Noel”. Janas Hen¬ dricks and Sue Webb were runners-up. The Student Cooperative Association carries on various projects and activities throughout the year. One of the main activities is the sponsoring of homecoming weekend, including the half time enter¬ tainment and the dance and soc hop. The S.C.A. also puts on the following assemblies: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, S.C.A. Acceptance Speeches, and S.C.A. Officer’s Installation. This year several con¬ tests were sponsored including the Banner Room, Bulletin Boards, and Student of the Week. Within the S.C.A., plans for school appearance, traffic con¬ ditions, and Honor Code Revision were acted upon in great depth. Through the leadership of the officers and the loyalty and service of the representatives, without a doubt, this year has been one of the most successful and outstanding for the Student Co-op¬ erative Association. In this picture, we see our executive officers in action. A lot of effort is exerted by these students to make our SCA worthwhile. 1 190 A’wSIl EMIL ' ' jp$ ' L ill 1 - ’ n ijiHlf - dKJI| mkim ■.
