Hopewell High School’s graduates have increased from two in 1917 to 178 in 196If. Accordingly it has been neces¬ sary to increase the size of our school building. In 1915 a combined elementary and high school was built behind the First Christian Church. The first year showed an enrollment of 800. This numoer increased steadily. The “B” Village Y.M.C.A. at Fourth Avenue was pur¬ chased in 1921 for use as a high school. In 1925, ten years after the occupation of the first school, the building we now know as our high school was occupied. The Home Eco¬ nomics Cottage was built in 1939 and the gymnasium in 191 + 9 . The Library, Commerce, and Science Building was added in 1958. The growth of The Kaleidoscope is parallel to that of our school. The first edition was published in 1929. The first Co-Editors were Mary Winston, now Mrs. Mary Gill¬ iam, and George Ruffin. Mrs. Gilliam also gave The Kaleidoscope its name. The first Kaleidoscope did not re¬ semble the yearbook we have today. In fact it was not a yearbook, but a literary magazine. This monthly publica¬ tion contained few pictures, only essays and poems. The May edition contained the pictures of the Seniors and possi¬ bly a record of the football team’s scores. In 1935 the book, which had gained a hard cover, was published in May only, thus making it truly an annual. Through the years has evolved a Kaleidscope of which we may be proud.
