Accordingly it has been neces¬ sary to increase the size of our school building. In 1915 a combined elementary and high school was built behind the First Christian Church. The first year showed an enrollment of 800. This numoer increased steadily. The “B” Village Y.M.C.A. at Fourth Avenue was pur¬ chased in 1921 for use as a high school. In 1925, ten years after the occupation of the first school, the building we now know as our high school was occupied. The Home Eco¬ nomics Cottage was built in 1939 and the gymnasium in 191 + 9 . The Library, Commerce, and Science Building was added in 1958. The growth of The Kaleidoscope is parallel to that of our school. The first edition was published in 1929. The first Co-Editors were Mary Winston, now Mrs. Mary Gill¬ iam, and George Ruffin. Mrs. Gilliam also gave The Kaleidoscope its name. The first Kaleidoscope did not re¬ semble the yearbook we have today. In fact it was not a yearbook, but a literary magazine. This monthly publica¬ tion contained few pictures, only essays and poems. The May edition contained the pictures of the Seniors and possi¬ bly a record of the football team’s scores. In 1935 the book, which had gained a hard cover, was published in May only, thus making it truly an annual. Through the years has evolved a Kaleidscope of which we may be proud. [features DEDICATION To Mr. Charles William Smith our Senior English teacher and sponsor, by whose un¬ selfish devotion and boundless energy we have been in¬ spired to undertake the task of publishing a yearbook. The 1934 Seniors, with sincere esteem and affection dedicate this volume of the Kaleidoscope. —quoted from 1934 Kaleidoscope NATIVITY SCENE 1955 Arlene Harvey .Mary Ronnie Trull.Joseph Bobby James . . . Wise Men ' , r I ' f : ' J A f _ Hilda Straccioni Miss Kaleidoscope 1954 6 outstanding qualities have Brought them honor and recognition 7 ’Dedication JlCrs Uiettie OCasA AjraAeSi I To one who has always been ready and willing to help us in any way and has given of her knowledge to us. As a person, we admire her, as a teacher, we respect her; as a friend, we love her. For these reasons, we, the Senior Class of ’65, dedicate this, our fiftieth annual Kaliedoscope, to Mrs. Bettie Nash Brakebill. 8 She joined the Hopewell School System in September, 1937. As a teacher of English, she served us faithfully until her death on June 3, 1964. The hundreds of students who were fortunate enough to come under her superior and patient instruction attest to the high standards of achieve¬ ment to which she inspired them and to her outstanding personality and sterling character. The faculty and students of Hopewell High School mourn the loss of this devoted teacher whose goal of perfection is epitomized by one of her favorite passages from the pen of Oliver Wendall Holmes, “Build thee more stately mansions. Oh my soul.” !7n JlCemoriam The smallish coach paced the side of the field, His backs were gaining and his line wouldn’t yield. But he kept on walking till his legs (I thought) would grow lame, As if nothing to nothing were the score of the game. While walking his path he always did smoke. And seemed always thinking, seldom he spoke. This was Coach Merner, whom Hopewell admired, Since in forty-eight as head coach was hired. His teams were the greatest as history will show, Their state record still stands, thirty-three games in a row. Losing seasons he endured; but seldom grew mad, For he knew 1 his “Blue Devils” gave it all that they had. He inspired each player with the will to win, To win as if used to it, to lose with a grin. His job kept him busy all round the clock, Part teacher, part farmer, businessman and “doc”. Though his spare time was scarce, little he had, He was never too busy to help out a lad, Who had gone the wrong way, offering advice and aid, A boy’s problem, his also, he always made. His doctor advised that his health being unfit, His coaching position he’d soon have to quit. His lifetime of football and he’d have to part, For the game’s excitement would endanger his heart. On game-nights he sits at home in his chair, And reads the next day’s paper of last night’s affair. He can’t even listen to the game on the radio, But he’s with the “Blue Devils,” always, in spirit, I know. —Bobby Johnson JlCrs. iJe oie Idk ee CSeane Miss JlopewefJ Jlicj i ScJiooj On Saturday night, March 14, 1964, Miss Mary Katharine Carroll walked out onto our stage in all her grace, charm, and beauty, to be selected by a panel of judges to reign as Miss Hopewell High School for the school year 1964-1965. 10 K, unners MISS KAYE JONES First runner-up MISS CAROL SHERLOCK Second runner-up Mary Katherine accepts her honors a$ Diane Letchworth, last year’s Miss Hopewell High School, and the runners-up look on. They won second place in the Central District Tournament, losing out to the Highland Springs team in the exciting last game of the tournament. Their high standing in this tournament made them eligible for play in the State Tournament, where they fought their way up to the play-off game against E. C. Glass High School of Lynchburg. Above are Ted Blanks and Patsy Peach, “Mr. and Miss Twirp.” One of the most exciting events of the school year is the Homecoming Dance sponsored by the S. C. A. Through the years the Hopewell High S.C.A. has supported a foster son. For the past several years we have had the pleasure of supporting Parke Ue Kill. We have found this to be one of our most rewarding undertakings. Parke is a very active fourteen year old boy, who lives in Korea. Everyone takes pride in him, as we have learned through his letters that he makes good grades; and is an outstanding member of his choir. Al¬ though both of his parents were killed in the war, he seems to have a remarkable sense of humor and an ambition for future success. The students of our school are proud to feel that we may have had a part in helping him to realize this ambition. 194 First Row: Linda Baker, Judi Porter. Each member has the tremendous responsibility of compiling a section, having pic¬ tures made, selling ads, and taking care of all the other headaches that arise before the deadlines. To accomplish these duties, a staff member must pos¬ sess the qualities of punctuality, determination, perseverence, originality, and ability. The Publica¬ tions Committee has the significant job of choos¬ ing the staff’s members from the student body. The KALEIDOSCOPE Assembly each spring is the high¬ light of the year for the staff. The yearbook is offi¬ cially presented and a new staff, co-editors, and bus¬ iness manager announced.
