Therefore, because of our respect for you, your highly valued friendship, and your services to our class, we the Senior Class of 1963 dedicate our most prized possession, The 1963 KALEIDOSCOPE, to you Mr. George Or r. dedicatee Administrative Assistant. His work is fair and efficient. 9 In classes his advice is to the point and understood by the boys. Miss Beverly Gilliam was chosen as the first Halloween Queen for 1962 by a vote of the student body. CONTESTANTS: Donita Holder, Jan Nicholson, Diane Letchworth, Barbara Watko, and Beverly Gilliam. The first day of school brought new hopes for many, the departing of the class of 63 and the beginning for the class of “68 . The first football game of the 62“ season was long awaited by the football team as well as their classmates. Ten was the magic number for the boys and girls tapped for the National Honor Society. Just as the first football game had been long awaited, the bonfire representing the Petersburg game symbol¬ ized our hopes fo stomping the Crimson Wave again this year. Rings were the subject talked about by all the Seniors as they received a tradition that has been passed down for many years. 22 The fifth annual Rhythm and Blues show sponsored by the D.O. Club was considered a great success by those who attended the annual affair. With all returning lettermen except one the Blue Devil basketball team is living up to every expectation hoped for by the student body. Our Student Co-operotive Association has m any fea¬ tures that compare with our state and federal govern¬ ments. Our exchange student from Brazil listens closely as our officers explain their duties. Fall and winter passed, and as spring came the Hope- well track team was competing with other members of the Central District in the various events taking place. As the month of February approached us, the tired co¬ editors of the 1963 Kaleidoscope completed the final pages and patiently awaited for the date when this work would become a reality. One of the best times of the year Christmas brought forth remembrances of what we have to be thankful for and with the contributions from each homeroon someone ' s Christmas was made a little more cheerful. The annual Christmas Program presented to the Parent Teachers Student Association by our band and choir is always looked forward to by our parents as well as the student body. Spring not only brought track, but the all time Ameri¬ can sport, Baseball, and the Blue Devil baseball team was well under way to winning the scheduled games. These four Seniors experienced a memorable time when then attended Boys and Girls State sponsored by the American Legion Post. The annual Junior Senior Prom carried out the theme Aloha saying farewell to the Seniors of 62 and introducing to the Seniors of 63 the experiences long looked forward to. Examinations, a very serious part of school life repre¬ sent a review of the knowledge we have gained in the past semesters. A new honor was bestowed for the first time on two Junior girls as they served as Graduation Marshals for the final meeting of the class of 62 . 24 This place where the student body has sat for five years is now empty, in its own quiet way it speaks a farewell for another school year. They have been very successful in taking their places in the community. A ten year follow-up is made in order to prove the usefulness and enrichment of the program. Malvin M. Among the better things at H.H.S. is her outstanding staff of football coaches. Mr. Deans, Head Coach and Backfield Coach, has done an excellent job of training his team during the 1962 season. Coach Deans was assisted by Mr. Whelan and Mr. Stallard, Line Coaches. The ends were under the direction of Coach Glass. The sweat and earnest effort put forth by the players plus the guidance and aid of the coaches account for the 7-3 rec¬ ord which the 1962 team boasts. The 1962 football team was composed of several returning lettermen and some inexperienced players. This year ' s team has proved to be a well-rounded team. Through their strength and enthusiasm, the Blue Devils maintained a most successful season. It is also interesting to note that their three losses were by a very close margin. This year, Blue Devil Captain, Donnie McGuire, having 98 points, was the highest scorer in the District. The desire and earnest effort shown by individual players plus the guidance of a wonderful coaching staff have combined to make a star 1962 football team. 1 15 Captain Donnie McGuire IjjJe 1 re Wayne Weston Mike Sherlock Jerry Hays T ommy Petree Dave Rackley Charles Minshew Charles Minor Al Glass Paul Schultz Charles Tadlock Steve Freeman Mickey Thompson Martin Diradour 1 16 John Kolek Jeff Basile Our 03 l ue Billy McKaig George Bell Bobby Franklin Johnny Parlow Ross Miller Leroy Blevins Phillip Nichols David O ' Connor Marvin Mathis Bobby Krout Floyd Temple Butch Seymour Marshall Murdock Tommy Nuckols Jimmy Carelock 1 17 Our 2 )evifs PRINCE GEORGE: Franklin evades a tackier to go for good yardage. A great deal of recognition should be given to the Varsity Cheerleaders and newly-elected H. H. S. Devils who were dedicated to the cause of cheering the Blue Devils on to victory. Their never failing enthusiasm and spirited support were exhibited during both football and basketball seasons. Continuous practice, publicizing games, decorating goal posts, and leading pep rallies were only a few of the activities sponsored by them which helped to spread school spirit throughout the student body. They also participated in the annual Cheer Rally and rode in the Toy Parade in Richmond. A gala Homecoming weekend, planned with the assistance of their sponsor, Miss Mildred Brannan, was a real success and one of the oustanding projects of the year.
