Each of the phases is one ray of light from our central source, Hopewell High School. As the name KALEIDOSCOPE signifies, our aca¬ demic life can be viewed in many different aspects, each one equally memorable in the years to come, May each one of you seek his own special mean ing and memories in these pages even as we have found joy and a sense of fulfillment in our work as Your editors, EDITORIAL STAFF Christine Spiers Mary Nuel Swift Darlene Davis _ Robert Pittman _ Betsy Ross Johnson Stella Tsourounis — _ Co-Edito _ Co-Edito Activities Edito Activities Edito _ Sports Edito _ Class Edito BUSINESS STAFF Ernest Rudolph Hazel Brannan Elizabeth Lee Josie Rogers Brenda Matthews Wayne Blanks Business Manage _ Class Edito _ Class Edito Log Edito Organizations Edito Photographe DEDICATION WILLIAM L. MERNER All through our days and years in Hopewell High, In every aspect of our lives at school, He taught us how to win and lose. The rules, Especially, he taught ivithout a sigh; Bestowed on us the will to win—at least to try. Therefore, to honor one whom we greatly appreciate, we the Senior Class of 1959 dedicate our KALEIDOSCOPE to WILLIAM L. MERNER. 5 CHARLES W. FOOTBALL RESUME The 1958 football team was composed of six lettermen as a nucleus around which Coach Merner and his staff built a traditional Blue Devil squad. Although, the four won and six lost record may not seem outstanding, it is interesting to note that five of the six losses could have been victories with a few breaks. It would not be fair to eulogise any member of the fine squad in any yearbook writeup since all per¬ formed as a team unit of which the school and community can well be proud. The Kaleidoscope staff commends the coaches for one of the finest jobs that any school has had. Under the tutelage of Coach Merner and his staff, the team upheld all standards of Blue Devil tradition and can be highly commended for their efforts. JAMES MURLEY Tackle JOHN ROYSTER Guard DOUGLAS TOMLIN Guard MIKE HARLAN Guard 66 BLUE DEVIL VARSITY BASKETBALL St ' ’ ;: - ; FIRST ROW: Richard Nesbitt, Douglas Tomlin, Norvell Burrow, Bobby Johnson, Bob Moore, and Doug Lee. SECOND ROW: Stanley Tomlin, Craig Connelly, Calvin Jacobs, Robert Harris, Martin Robertson, and Terry Swift. “It’s not the size of the Devil in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the Devil.” At the time the Kaleido¬ scope went to press, the Blue Devils were unde¬ feated in 13 Central Dis¬ trict games and had prac¬ tically won their second District title in a row, plus a berth in the eight- team State Tournament in Charlottesville. On each Monday, all the homeroom representatives assemble with the S.C.A. officers and Miss Burch to act on the school business of the week. It is through this very council that democratic progress is made. This year, the Student Council has pro¬ vided for an underprivileged war orphan in Greece, a shining example of student government in action. And we will not forget though we be far, far away.” ARCHITECT RICHMOND ARCHITECT’S CONCEPTION FOR NEW ADDITION TO H.H.S. As the sun sets on our final year at H.H.S., the “Kaleidoscopic” views lend color and beauty to our past and so, we, the Senior Class of 1959, capture for the last time, an all-inclusive vision of four wonderful years that were the essence of our growth and development. With an eye to the future we see the rising of a new addition for the students who will follow us, which we hope will serve as an incentive to bring forth the most from their high school education. The memorable, sometimes even traditional, events which are a part of each year will remain as bright recollections and perhaps spur us onward. 120 Watch the birdie, says Mary Nuel Where to, Dennis and Wayne?
