Class Poem Having reached the summit of a lesser peak, We pause, and see with weariness and dismay A great plain and network of roads stretching out before us; And at their end, far in the azure distance A mountain whose dim peak lies veiled by heavy clouds. Long have we toiled to reach this one small summit, And now-innumerable roads open up before us— Ere we attain that higher point that beckons in the distance; Alas! What unseen terrors lurk within their reaches And what perils distract us, as we search the veiled peak. But as we ponder, weary and undecided, A voice from out the wilderness whispers comfort to us: “Take joy that there are yet dreams and roads to travel; And take secret pride in thy toil and onward steps; Wonder at their teachings and drink deep from the hidden springs along the way.” Then, let us be up and away. And with backward glance at the small steps behind us Let us turn to walk the great wh.te roads of life, Stretching out an arduous challenge Till we reach that unknown hidden summit. To The Underclassmen With a sense of regret and many a backward glance, the Seniors of 1951 leave the familiar halls of Hopewell High to join the band of alumni of our dear Alma Mater. The loyalty, the friendship, and happy memories that we shared will linger within our hearts. We hope that you will benefit from your years in H.H.S. as we have, making a part of your daily life all that we strove to do and much that we never accomp¬ lished. All the things that we hold dear we place in your hands. Not only the material things of the school do we trust to you, but even greater—the spirit, the whole¬ hearted cooperation, and the joys of accomplishment that are essential parts of school activities. Remember that education is a torch to carry high and to keep burning with bright and steady flame. No greater honor could we bestow upon you, than to leave you this burning torch. We must leave, but we will always cherish the teachings and guidance of H.H. S., and we will never forget you, our friends.
