Long have we toiled to reach this one small summit, And now-innumerable roads open up before us— Ere we attain that higher point that beckons in the distance; Alas! What unseen terrors lurk within their reaches And what perils distract us, as we search the veiled peak. But as we ponder, weary and undecided, A voice from out the wilderness whispers comfort to us: “Take joy that there are yet dreams and roads to travel; And take secret pride in thy toil and onward steps; Wonder at their teachings and drink deep from the hidden springs along the way.” Then, let us be up and away. And with backward glance at the small steps behind us Let us turn to walk the great wh.te roads of life, Stretching out an arduous challenge Till we reach that unknown hidden summit. T rcasurer CLASS MOTTO The roads of life are far and wide that we have yet to travel.” CLASS COLORS AND FLOWER t Green and White Red Rose To The Underclassmen With a sense of regret and many a backward glance, the Seniors of 1951 leave the familiar halls of Hopewell High to join the band of alumni of our dear Alma Mater. The loyalty, the friendship, and happy memories that we shared will linger within our hearts. We hope that you will benefit from your years in H.H.S. as we have, making a part of your daily life all that we strove to do and much that we never accomp¬ lished. All the things that we hold dear we place in your hands. Not only the material things of the school do we trust to you, but even greater—the spirit, the whole¬ hearted cooperation, and the joys of accomplishment that are essential parts of school activities. Remember that education is a torch to carry high and to keep burning with bright and steady flame. No greater honor could we bestow upon you, than to leave you this burning torch. We must leave, but we will always cherish the teachings and guidance of H.H. S., and we will never forget you, our friends. ■ ! ii I Class of 1952 3H—MRS. Football Reviews HOPEWELL 68—VICTORIA 0 The Blue Devils’ crusade for the State Championship-was officially underway when Walter Brodie received the pigskin from Johnny Dean and went over for the first touchdown. During the second quarter Lewis Dean took a handoff 49 yards for a TD, followed by Floogie Walker’s race from Hopewell’s 20 yard line to the goal line, and Johnny Dean’s running an intercepted pass all the wav. The third quarter saw Mike Foley and Bobby Scruggs tally twice and Eugene Walker once. In the fourth quarter Foley stopped the only real Panther threat by inter¬ cepting a pass on the Hopewell 11 and traveled over the Victoria TD line. HOPEWELL 38—GRAINGER 0 This game was a repeat performance for the Blue Devils. After having two touchdowns nullified, John Dean finally plunged over for the first score. Krumel took the ball fifty yards for the next followed by John Dean and Walker both scoring two each. While cutting the Red Devils’ wall to shreds, the Blue Devils held them to a net gain of two yards. Thus, they marked up win number thirteen. HOPEWELL 13—JEFFERSON 12 The Devils’ third victory wasn’t an easy one, the decisive point being the perfect place kick by Hobo” Ackerman. From the time the whistle was blown the Jefferson Seniors put up a battle that looked as if they would walk away the victors, but the touchdowns of Foley and Walker kept the score tied, broken only by Ackerman’s kick. HOPEWELL 27—GEORGE WASHINGTON 7 Once again the Blue De vils brought forth their inspiring football. When the game was but three minutes old John Dean faded back and tossed a TD heave to Roosevelt Takesian. Walker carried the next one over and a J. Deane-pitchout- to-Krumel, pass-to-Foley play paid off in another six points. The ). Dean to Brodie combination clicked once more in the third quarter. HOPEWELL 20—BENEDICTINE 7 In a game that featured the most intense line play of the season, the Devils had to fight hard and fast. The aerial attack executed by J. Dean, and receivers Brodie, Foley, and Takesian came through to tell the difference. Touchdowns were performed by Takesian, Foley, and Brodie topped by Ackerman’s two place kicks over the crossbar. Football Reviews HOPEWELL 37—PETERSBURG 13 Next came the annual Classic with the Crimson Wave of Petersburg who domi¬ nated the play during the second quarter of the game. The Mernermen fought hard to retain their championship. Krumel staged the first TD standing up and then Foley drove over for the next score. Again Ackerman’s kick made the dif¬ ference as the Devils led 14-13 at the half. Walker tallied in the third quarter while Foley and Takesian followed it up with one each. This was Ackerman’s perfect day. HOPEWELL 52—GRANBY 13 This one proved to be a track meet when the Devils decidedly outclassed the Blue Comets of Granby. The parade was started when J. Dean tossed to Takesian in the end zone for the score. The second tally was a pass from J. Dean to tackle Linwood Cox. The third and fourth came when Krumel and Brodie received pitchouts and raced 41 and 49 yards respectively. Early in the third quarter Bobby Platt took off on his spectacular 71 yard TD jaunt. Lewis Dean and Walker also crossed over the goal line for Hopewell’s seventeenth consecutive victory. HOPEWELL 41—JOHN MARSHALL 13 The Devils played another bang-up game making it win number eighteen. They took a three TD, relaxed scoring for a moment, and then came back with three more. Touchdowns were credited to Brodie, Lewis Dean, Foley, Johnny Dean, and Donald Thompson. Ackerman had a near-perfect evening making five out of six kicks good. HOPEWELL 27—WILSON 0 This was the day! Hopewell celebrated her Homecoming! The Presidents fought hard and stubbornly to spoil this gala affair as we had done last year, hold¬ ing the Blue Devils to one score made by Scruggs during the first half. Then the Devils exploded with touchdowns by Brodie and Krumel, and Ackerman made three out of the four extra points. HOPEWELL 40—THOMAS JEFFERSON 13 BLUE DEVILS KEEP TITLE! The team scored in every quarter, con¬ cluding our second undefeated season to retain the State Championship. Brodie crossed the goal line twice and Takesian once. Lewis Dean made the greatest run of his career (76 yards) but it was called back because of a penalty. In the third quarter L. Dean made the fourth 1 D but really gained his revenge by going 73 yards for a score. Walker tallied the last TD and the 1950 season was over. Girls’ Varsity Hockey Squad MRS. JANE WILSON . One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press¬ man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of d camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer’s ink, symboli¬ cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert¬ ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity.
