HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1955 During the month of September, 1943, an eventful day occurred in the Hope School. To the teacher, Mrs. Sylvia Johnston, this day might have seemed to be quite routine -a school year beginning, new students to be enrolled, work to be done - but to six of us Seniors of '55 this first day of school was a very special day. lt marked the end of our carefree existence: we now had a purpose - to learn all we could during the school years ahead. Those of us who were enrolled here that day were: Adrienne Cole, Warren Germundson, Mary Jean Jacobson, Shirley McCullough, Arlene Peterson, and Ed Runck. As we began our second year of school, we were again welcomed by Mrs. Johnston. Lyle Coates joined our class during this year. The next fall three more of our present Seniors - Bill DuRose, Shirley Johnson, and Donald Mueller - joined our ranks. This year also brought three teachers - Mrs. Twito, Miss Aaserud, and Mrs. Edwardson. Mary Jean Jacobson transferred to another school. Grade four found no changes in our student list. We were taught by Mrs. Mauch. The following September Mary Jean returned to our group. Our teacher was Miss Emma Seidlitz who is now Mrs. Swenson, teacher of grades seven and eight. During the next three years - while we were digging our way through grades six, seven and eight - our teachers were Miss Hylden, Miss Justesen, and Miss Rupert. September, 1951, marked the beginning of another chapter in our lives: we walked up another flight of stairs to our long - awaited assembly desks. The nineteen members of this Freshman class were: Helaine Beringer, Adrienne Cole, Lyle Coates, Bill DuRose, Warren Germundson, Mary Jean Jacobson, Shirley Johnson, Bud Landstrom, Shirley McCullough, Donald Mueller, Richard Mueller, David Nelson, Joy Orn, Arlene Peterson, Karen Peterson, Ed Runck, Arliss Simonson, Beatrice Unruh, and Hadley Verwest. Helaine, Arliss, and Karen came from Blabon, while Hadley and Joy attended grade school in Pickert. Our instructors for this school year were: Mr. Simson, Mr, Ludwig, Miss Jondahl, and Mr. Semingson. Miss Pearson assumed Mr., Semingson's teaching duties for the last twelve weeks of the year. The next fall one new student, Carol Hayden, joined our class: three students - Bud Landstrom Karen Peterson, and Beatrice Unruh - either dropped out or moved away. Faculty changes included Mr. Lindgren, who replaced Miss Pearson: and Mr. Belknap from Mayville STC, who directed the band. Last year our roll was further decreased by the loss of Carol Hayden and Richard Mueller. Mr. Wood succeeded Mr. Lindgren, and Mr. Wenaas come from Mayville twice a week to direct our band. Mrs. Simson directed the girls' chorus: Mr. Moilanen taught a shop course for the boys. Important events of the year for us were our class play, Deadly Ernest, our prom with the theme, Moonlight and Roses, and the operetta, Polished Pebbles. Fifteen Seniors will proudly receive diplomas this spring. Our faculty includes: Superintendent Simson, Mr. Ludwig, Miss Johdahl, and Mr. Wenaas. This has been a busy year: the remaining months will include another class play, skip day, Baccalaureate on May ZZ, and Commencement Exercises on May Z7 with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, M. F. Peterson, giving the Commencement address, SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Warren Germundson, vice-president: Adrienne Cole, treasurer: Mary Jean Jacobson, secretary: Lyle Coates, president. THE STUDE T COUNCIL Hope High School's Student Council became a member of the North Dakota Association of Student Councils for the first time this year. Fifty-four schools in North Dakota belong to this organization. The main objective of the group has been to develop people in our school who are worthy citizens of the school, the community, and the nation in which we live. Through such democratic principles our voices are being heard and our work is expanding. ABOVE: Lunch is served by Student Council for Christmas party.
