Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1971 volume:

The Lions Roar Hope High School Hope, Kansas Debra Lorson, Editor Dedication We, the annual staff, have elected to dedicate the 1971 Lion's Roar to Mr. Haden because we feel he has been responsible for much of the success of our class. He has stuck by us through all of our money making projects, class parties, and Junior play and prom. As our class sponsor for three years. Social Science teacher and football Coach, his influence has helped shape many of our lives. Thank you, Mr. Hadeni 1971— A Senior Odvssei An Odyssey? Yes; a journey characterized by peril challenge, adventure, and hard- ships. However, the mind recalls the pleasure more than the pain, the tranquility rather than the chaos and joy in greater abundance than sorrow. The happy times loom as bright spotlights as we gaze down the road from whence we came. This day, this year, this lifetime can have greater meaning if we pause at this time to reflect and learn from past experience—our own and others who have made a similar journey. Unlike Odyssius, who after all his wanderings, finally came to the end of his voyage. We have only just begun ours. May we never consider our education complete as long as we live. We hope this book will serve as a reminder of one year of your pilgrimage through life. We also hope it will bring you as much enjoyment through the years as it has to those of us who composed it. Smooth sailing. 3% This Is Hop High Administration Leslie L. Worrell, President Unified School Board The birthright of every individual has its roots in the moral foundation of the nation. These foundations are an agreement of values which guide us in managing our lives and our social activities. When these values are understood and believed by each of us, we then have established a common bond with the people who are strug- gling for freedom and human dignity. The education each of you students receive, while training your minds and developing your skills, will be helpful in selecting the values that guide your lives in protecting the birthright of every American. Congratulations and best wishes. May each of you achieve the goals of your chosen field. Leslie L. Worrell Dale F. Scott Charmaine Oesterrelch Members of the communities who serve on the school board do so with no tangible reward and very little thanks. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them, and the taxpayers of the Rural Vista Unified District, for quality education. Dale Gantenbein Milton Jacobson Jerry A. Wendt Dr. Henry Holloway 6 Roland H. Vanderbilt Principal Americans have always been able to rise to meet any challenge that has confronted our grea’ country. Most of these challenges have been by foreign nations. To- day the communists and leftists are trying to weaken us from within. The first step that they use is to point out to ojr citizens that their rights have been transgress- ed upon. Thus many people go to extremes just to defy authority. We should all work to preserve this great nation. Students! Think! Are you letting this happen to you? Don't sell our enemies short. They are smart and are trying every way they can to break down our princi- ples of democracy which our ancestors have given to us. You will need all of the education that you can get in order to preserve our democracy. Donald P. The theme A Time For Us was carried out in the decorations. Guests entered through a pathway lined with pillars entwined with ivy. The tables were set with wine bottles and roses adorning their centers. Cozy little groups of four dined and were entertained together. A fountain, with its constantly chang- ing colors and water spilling over its three tiers, was the focal point of the dining area. Burgundy and Gold colors were used in the ceiling and side decorations. A mural depicting a scene in an- cient Rome extended the entire width of the gym above the head table. Servers performed their duties in attire from that historic period. In the ball room area the main feature was the balcony, symbolizing the love scene from Romeo and Juliet. Ivy twined up the sides and giant urns adorned the top of the balcony. Other interesting areas were a love- seat and a picture of Romeo and Juliet and a garden area. Seniors, Guests, and Juniors danced to the music of the Board of Regents rock band. Keep Moving Anne Baldwin June Harris Rush Harris . . Steve Schlesener Tom Jeffery Douglas Wells Prof. E. E. Football This was the year of the Lions and there were a lot of firsts in football this year. As you all know this was the first year that the Lions took part in the 1-35-West League, as the old Century League was disbanded. In over all effort, spirit and team work, this was the first group of boys that played so well together since I have been here at Hope, a great team in all. Also the Lions won their Homecoming Game for the first time in quite a few years. As to one of the games the Lions played it was a first—as this is the only time St. Xavier was beated by the Lions in football. It also was a first—to beat an old record of 4-4 which was 5-4 over all this year and third in fhe league. As to picking an all league team in the new league was a first—also for many years. So you see there were an awful lot of firsts to come the way of such a grand bunch of guys. The part I don't like in coaching is when you have to say, Boys, this is the last game for you fellows. This is hard to do when you have such a grand team as I had the good fortune to coach this year. I will always have a place in my heart for these guys who you see in the picture above. Thanks an awful lot to you who won't be back and to you who will be back—come back looking for a good season. But remember I will have to say to you as I said to the others who came this way. Boys this is the last one for you fellows. ALL-CONFERENCE: names left to right; Mark Haden (Offense), Bob Riffel (Defense), Harlan Schlesener (Hon. Mention), Daryl Schlesener (Hon.
