Hope High School Hope, Kansas Chris Sandow, Editor FHE LIONS ROAR DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of Seventy, dedicate this annual to the two main reasons our class has had so much success this past year--Mr. Mc- Carty and Mrs. Rhodes. We appreciate the many, many small things you both have done to make our class run smoothly. And so we, the Senior Class of '70', wish to express our gratitude and thanks for all you have done by dedicating this annual for the year 1969-70 to you, Mr. McCarty and to you, Mrs. Rhodes. The seniors shall never forget Mrs. Rhodes for her excellent teach- ing of the Spanish and Latin classes. She has been teaching these classes for many years here at Hope High. We also appreciated her accompany- ing us on our Senior Sneak. Gra- cious, Senora Rhodes! A Mrs. Rhodes has been not only our class sponsor, but a teacher of languages, librarian, and senior play director. In many ways she has helped us to be better students and better individuals. Mr. McCarty was also our senior class sponsor. He teaches woodworking, freshman and sophomore physical educa- tion, and driver's education. He is assistant coach for our football team and head coach for our basketball team. Mr. Mc- Carty was also a director for our senior class play. Perhaps Mr. McCarty's greatest accomplishments came in coaching our great basketball team for the past three years and receiving two second place trophies and one first place trophy. Practically every stu- dent learned to drive a car under Mr. McCarty's watchful eye. Thank you for all you have done, Mr. McCarty! 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS page Administration........................ 7 Faculty ..............................11 Seniors...............................15 Undergraduates........................27 Organizations.........................35 Sports ............................... 53 Staff.................................69 Humor................................. 73 a A time and place for us there will always be. The times and places we have already seen through our high school years we shall never forget. This last year in high school as seniors is only the be- ginning of a lifetime of memories. So we, the Sen- ior Class of Seventy, would like to present this yearbook as an annual book of memories for the year 1969-70. 5 ADMINISTRATION UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD Mr. Dale Scott, Mr. Milton Jacobson, Mr. Dale Gantenbeln, Mr. Leslie Worrell, Mr. Jerry Wendt, Mrs. Charmaine Oesterreich, and Dr. Henry Holloway As we examine the educational progress and policies of our attendance centers this 1969- 1970 school year, we plan continuous action of improvement for the educational needs of the youth of our communities by outlining the following desires of attainment: Making our educational system responsive to the individual needs and aspirations of every young person and truly relevent to the realities of this society in which they will live their lives. Expanding educational opportunity to insure that all our students receive the best education we can possibly give them. Recognizing our responsibility to maintain an educational system which will provide the best possible preparation to all our youth for full and productive lives in this modern world. As the world unfolds before you, may the designs upon the trestle board of life contain happiness, love and freedom as part of the educational process and achievement of human life. The Board of Education sincerely extends to you, the Class of 1970, congratulations and best wishes. Leslie L. Worrell President, Board of Education 8 Mr. Roland Vanderbilt Principal Mr. Donald Little Superintendent I believe that schools are institutions which are operated for the better- ment of our society. Students should take advantage of their opportunity to study because education is of utmost importance in the enrichment of their lives. To be a good citizen a person must be intellectually, morally, physi- cally, and spiritually prepared in order to find a place in this increasingly complex world. A good education increases his chance for real success. 9 Roland H. Lane Rock is now settled down on a ranch and is busy raising little Rocks and horses for his wife to ride. Larry Schlesener has lost all his hair except for his shapely sideburns. Alan Bethe is still trying to climb to the top of the rope. Greg Jacobson is happily married and running a successful business setting up Cousin Neal with Herington women. Kathy Neuschafer is married and living on a farm. Driving a school bus takes up a lot of her time. Janet Deines is still in nurses training because she can't get past vaccinating oranges. Steve Walker is now a KBI top agent in charge of investigation of robberies throughout the state of FINA gas stations. Ron Rock has grown five more feet and has worked his way to the position of head coach for the K-State Wildcats who have won first place in the Big 8 for the past five years. David Anderson is a permanent member of the Tijuana Brass. Hilton Helbach is now the owner of a chain of fancy hotels known as the Helbach Hiltons . Joyce Riffel is now painting with her right hand only because the left is so full of promise rings she can't lift it. Hub Farres has perfected a new hair straightener. Joyce Lorson is the head of Revlon's division of fake fingernails. Dwight Linder has led the straight life and is ready to give his testimony. Pat Rufener, due to her Dad's influence, has recently been chosen Navarre Golden Grain Girl of the year. Patricia Lorson is the next Landon Lecturereto speak at KSU. Chris Sandow is the only major Paris designer these days who doesn't go along with the cur- rent fashion of midi-skirts. Craig Davis has built a time machine so he can turn the clock back to 11:59 and beat the cur- few. Wayne Schuster is busy raising black sheep. White ones are too hard to keep clean. Don Lauxman is a peanut butter tycoon. Patti Lay has taken over ownership in Lay's Grocery and operates a nursery in the back of the store. Since Kathy Morgan has taken over her Mom's business, she has invented a cream to remove freckles. Phil Lorson is still the most eligible bachelor in Hope. Jim Riedy and Gene Bielefeld are the 1980 Presidential candidates. Jim's platform is to lower the voting age to 15 and Gene's is to lower the drinking age to 15. Don Lorson is still faithfully attending wedding parties in the legion basement. Sharline Morgan finally successfully completed her underground tunnel that goes straight from her house to Herington. Linda Guthals was found leaning against a lamppost in McPherson. She still has not decided what to do with her life. Seems she is torn between working as a Bunny or attending Bible College. Adeline Warns liked Hope High School so much she has been taking post-graduate work. Alan Schlesener is busy managing his orange grove. He finds there is more demand than supply. Sharon Riedy is now to Betty Crocker what the Dough Boy is to Pillsbury. 25 HOPE LIONS Lions. Orange and black. These words are more than words to the students of Hope High. They will forever represent high school memories to all who have attended Hope. Our school song, mascot, and colors represent the school spirit that has been present in each class and will continue in the future. d..d_|d.d: 32 5 §k, kadi. to oua dcGA Ackoo-l ire Aiaq. to thee mm |GLA-eAt. o| lUAG f. The Lions returned three lettermen this year with one starter back. As the season progressed the Lions won 9 and lost 9. The highlights of the year were a third place finish in the Century League Tournament and finishing the league with a 7-1 record for a first place title. This was the last year of the Century League so it was quite an honor for Hope to win the league cham- pionship. The boys have worked hard for the success of this year.
