Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1969 volume:

We, the Seniors of 1969, dedicate this annual to Mr. Foster with sincere thanks and appreciation. These past four years have brought us Seniors many memories. We're sure that you will find some of your own, tucked away in that mathematical mind. Take a moment to remember those math classes that we went through, for better or for worse. General Math and Algebra I were our introduction to the frightening and fascinating world of Mathematics. After that first encounter, some of us ventured a look at Geometry. Planes, triangles, lines, and graphs took their toll; but classes weren’t nec- essarily boring! Algebra II and Advanced Math brought headaches to a few of us; but, no doubt, you had your share too. We have learned something during those four years. Your interest and help in planning Prom and other class projects, as our sponsor last year were gratefully accepted. We want to add an extra-special thank you for your help and advice in the preparation of this annual As our yearbook sponsor, you’ve spent countless hours working with us. As we complete our fourth year of high school, you’re completing your fourth year as a teacher at Hope High School. It has been most worthwhile for us; and to show our personal thanks, we dedicate this annual to you, Mr. Mitchell Foster. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration................Page 7 Faculty............................11 Seniors............................15 Undergrads.........................27 Organizations......................35 Sports..............................53 Humor............................ 69 Those were the days. . . The joys, sorrows, surprises, and activities, that have filled the days, have become part of our lives. Looking back, we'll remember planning for our Junior- Senior Banquet and Prom and worrying over the results of class plays and projects. The thrill of special games. Home- comings, and dances are not easily forgotten. We'll remem- ber the great times that Senior Sneak and Class Night brought. These events are especially remembered, and climaxed by the night of Graduation. As we analyze this necessity, we are aware of the basic qualifications of an educational institution and system which offers the youth of our community the essentials needed in accomplishing this purpose. It is our sincere hope that as you seniors have journeyed through the lo- cal elementary and secondary levels of learning that you have found these el- ements present in our schools. As you continue your additional education and as you reflect upon your recent high school career, may each one of you ex- claim, Those were the days. This may be interpreted to mean, that it was during this journey, that the realization came to you, knowledge alone is not enough, but knowledge applied, is the beginning of personal power for achieve- ment by each individual. May you also have learned, good fortune comes to each one who strives for good manners, good sense, and honorable persist- ency of purpose; for these are the real tools of success. Someone has written, Today 1 am determined to study to improve my- self, for tomorrow I may be wanted, and I must not be found lacking. May you discover that the most pleasing path of life passes through the avenues of learning. The Board of Education extends to you, the class of 1969, congratulations and best wishes. May your path lead, Ever Onward. 9 Personal Message by Mr. Fry Mr. Donald Little Superintendent Mr. Gerald Dorsch Principal Personal Message by Mr. Dorsch The more deeply one delves into the many phases of education, the more one realizes the many facets of life which are opened with a good education. Together with this comes the realization of the vital place in education held by schools comparable to the Hope Schools in size and quality. In this era of disorder, discrimination, and dropouts, it is the small school and community which continues to instill a feeling of respect for others, for their rights and for their property. We should truly thank God for the small schools and the com- munities which support them. 10 Mr. Jerry McCarty Boy's Physical Education Woodworking Drafting Driver's Education Health Basketball Coach Assistant Football Coach Track Coach Student Council Sponsor Senior Class Sponsor Mr. Norman Vanderbilt Physics Chemistry Biology General Science Sophomore Class Sponsor Mrs. Alma Foster Home Economics Co-ed Junior Class Sponsor FHA Sponsor FACULTY Mr. William Haden Miss Linda Saddler English 10, 11 Mr. James E. But first, let's take a look at them in the days of 1979. We find that Kenneth Backhus still keeps himself in shape by running the half-mile every night. Mike Beltz and David Ihde are now the best racing team in the country, yet at this race here at Indianapolis, David is racing alone. It seems that while Mike was practicing some of his fancy road work, he was caught by Elmer who is now our county sheriff. Deanna Boyce is married to a young doctor and has her own pediatrics ward. Gene Brockmeier has stayed in Hope so that he could be Hope High School's basketball coach. Arthur Davidson can be found most of the time in the school parking lot raking gravel. Gene Donnelly has become the world's champion wrestler. He has finally found something that puts his physique to good use. Kevin Donnelly isn't driving his Mustang anymore. It seems that he now has a wife who drives him. Mike Farres has become an unqualified scientist. He is still asking other the answers to his problems. Pam Farres is now a sports broadcaster for all baseball games. She has found that her baseball playing in high school has come in handy. Karen Guthals is a famous buyer of all the new clothing fashions for Macy's in New York. But there is a slight problem, it seems that she keeps most of the clothes for herself. Sandra Haire has now achieved her goal as a beauty instructor, but seems to be a good instructor of everything. Craig Jahnke is head of the math department at Hope High School as it was always one of his better subjects. Carolyn Lorson liked the job of being Annual editor so much that she is now editor of the New York Times. Cheryl Moennich is now working on the more complicated computers that match mates. This comes in very handy for her own personal life. Charles Piper now writes his own science-fiction books. It seems that no one else can write a book that will hold his attention. Lloyd Pschigoda has found out that his track experience in high school helps quite a bit in running after all the little Pschigodas. John Rickenbrode is now City Marshal of Hope. He is especially good at driving the pad- dywagon since he got plenty of driving practice while he was in high school. Glen Riedy is married and lives on the northeast end of Hope. He is raising his own foot- ball squad for Hope High School. Nancy Riedy is now an executive secretary for a large insurance firm. Isn't it surprising how far you can get on one year of typing? Barbara Riffel has become the world's most famous movie critic. Carolyn Riffel enjoyed El Dorado College so much that she became private secretary to the Dean of El Dorado College. Lee Rohrer now owns and runs his own factory for making chocolate-chip cookies. But he still puts the chocolate bits in first, just like he used to do in Co-ed. Larry Ryff has finally managed to get fat because he has completely cleaned out the Her- ington bakery. Jerri Rutz is now Commander-In-Chief of the United States Air Force. David Schimming now has his own swingin' band. They play all over the United States for F. H. A. girls. Sherry Schlesener is working on her degree in journalism, so that she will be able to make the Hope Dispatch a big-time newspaper. Dianne Whitehair now has her own dancing school where she teaches modern dancing. She still gets carried away though, just like in high school. 25 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President.......... EDITOR C arolyn Lorson ANNUAL STAFF A Special Note From the Editor . . . This is your yearbook ... I hope it expresses your interests, activities, and memories of 1969.1 want to thank the members of the Staff and the Advis- or for their time, effort, and help in preparing this Annual. It's a job that needs people who are inter- ested and willing to work, and I think you've done your job. Each page has a special significance to mem - bers who helped plan and design this book. How- ever, it's also your book, even if you re not a mem- ber of Annual Staff, because every student and teacher has been an essential part in making this yearbook the special story of Hope High School, in the year 1969. The depth of the team was much greater as we had forty boys intent to come out in the spring with thirty-seven checking out in the fall. This is good because it makes the boys work harder for a position and work hard to keep that berth on the top eleven. The Lions, were slow getting started and at times, they didn't get going until the second half of the game. But over all the team was more improved the past year in experience and fundamentals of the game. We were very fortunate in not having too many injuries as the boys were in better condi- tion. With improvement over the last two years we are looking for a much better season next year, and the Century League crown. We are long overdue for this title and hope to gain it next fall if all goes well. Let's be King Lions next year, first in the Century League. 54 Coach Haden FRONT ROW: Left to right, Gene Bielefeld, Mark Haden, John Rickenbrode, Alan Bethe, Ron Rock, Mike Beltz, Glen Riedy, Arch Davidson, Bob Riffel, Dave Schimming, Craig Davis, Alan Schlesener, SECOND ROW: Mr. Mc- Carty, Neal Jacobson, Charles Hyman, Daryl Schlesener, Terry Gruber, James Davidson, Gene Donnelly, Steve Walker, Willis Rutz, Harlan Schlesener, Gerald Dittman, Dave Ihde, Hub Farres, Dwight Linder, Jeff Morgan, John Riffel, Bill Lorson, David Anderson, Erick Rumold, Mr. Haden, BACK ROW: Von Rhodes, Steve Barrett, Max Engle, Mark Anderson.
