HOPE HIGH SCHOOL HOPE, KANSAS JANET ROCK, Editor THE LION’S ROAR I DEDICATION We, the annual staff of 1968, dedicate this annual with sincere appreciation to Mr. Herbert Schimming. Mr. Herbert Schimming, known to the students as Herb, has been more than the head bus manager for five years. He has been a personal friend to all students of Hope High School. Through his efforts we have gained many educational and extra-curricular experiences. All have been more enjoyable because of his friendly and good-natured attitude. He has made it possible for us to attend all of the countless activities throughout our high school years. To you Herb, we dedicate this annual. 2 TABLE OF Administration ........................................ Page 7 Faculty ................................................. Yes, it's been a very good year—and one filled with memories. The Seniors of 1968 will always remember the magic and fun-filled moments of the Senior Play, Class Night, and Prom. Graduation and Baccalaureate bring a close to this wonderful Senior year. Looking back upon our years in high school, we realize how far we've come, and yet, how far we have to go. The year of 1968 completes our High School days of homework, activities, and fun. We have memories of this year which will last a lifetirru?. As Seniors of 68 , we give to you this book of memories. IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR , 6 ADMINISTRATION w 1 Howard Fry President Mrs. Eldon Oesterreich r Leslie Worrell Vice-president UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD Dale Scott Milton Jacobson Cecil Kuhn 8 Mr. Gerald Dorsch Principal Mrs. Ceola Whitehair Secretary Personal Message by Mr. Dorsch | believe it is time to pay tribute to the youth of our nation, instead of paying homage only to elders who have created the world we are living in. Today's youth are being subjected to more pressures than the youth of any other phase of histo- ry. They are responding well. Our youth, especially in the rural areas, have an exceptionally fine record of achievements in academics in business and in life Our Board of Education, and others like it, are demanding that we create a good school environment so that our youth will continue to help our country be the first, with the most of the best. Our youth are our future. I believe our country is in good hands. We are here to see how many of us have carried out our ambitions. Connie Beltz is really excited, having just received word that she has been made as- sistant editor of Playboy Magazine. Connie Brown is now an interpreter for the U.N., but she has one problem; she keeps telling all of the top secrets. Terry Davis spends most of his time in the barber shop which he owns. That's quite a change—from cutting classes in '68 to cutting hair in '78. Duane Dittman is now superintendent at Rural Vista 481; he had a little pull from the School Board. LaDonna Engle tells us that she's just been hired as Connie Francis's personal body guard. It's quite a lot of fun keeping all the boys away!!!! Norma Gravatt now owns and operates her own trailer court. Larry Gruber has just been elected president of the Hope Chapter of Playboy Club. We always knew you were hiding something from us, Larry! We hear a rumor that Elvyn Jones has signed a lifetime contract with the Green Bay Packers to replace Bart Starr. Denny Kerbs has started his own Standard Service Station in Abilene. He seems to be saving a lot of money since he doesn't have to waste his gas on trips between Hope and Abilene. We now see Rita Lorson over in the corner feverishly counting the money she saved by clipping coupons. Steve Lorson has just returned from the world championship drag race where he has just won first place. We always knew you were pretty fast, Steve. Barbara Miller has just won the 1978 Nobel Prize for her book, THE PROS AND CONS OF GOING STEADY. Sharon Morgan, now State FHA Advisor has just become engaged to the State FFA Advisor. She finds co-education is much more fun! Martha Oesterreich is busy using the skill she acquired at Brown-Mackie School of Business. She is acting as private secretary to the new superintendent of Rural Vista 481. Eddie Piper is now acting as Congressman and is persistently trying to push the Firearms Bill. Meanwhile, back on the ranch, we find Mark Riedy and Dianne raising their own little brood. After Janet Rock accomplished what she set out to do in Public Relations, THEY settled down in Hope where she is editor of the HOPE DISPATCH. Cindy Schaaf is now a noted scientist creating new hair colors for the new fashions of 1979. Candy Schuster is now a speech therapist. She has finally found a way to put her talking to good use. 23 Class meetings Magazine sales results SENIOR ACTIVITIES Planning skit for assembly 24 Co-captains sales manager of magazine sales Top salesmen of magazine sales UNDERGRADS JUNIOR CLASS Craig Jahnke Carolyn Riffel Sherry Schlesener Gene Donnelly Dianne Whitehair Glen Riedy Mike Farres Carolyn Lorson David Ihde Pam Farres Jerri Rutz Larry Ryff Deanna Boyce Kevin Donnelly Jim Bernhardt Joyce Jacobson Kenneth Backhus Gene Brockmeier Karen Guthals David Schimming Sandra Ha ire Lloyd Pschigoda Arthur Davidson Cheryl Moennich Lee Rohrer Nancy Riedy John Rickenbrode Charles Piper Barbara Riffel Mike Beltz David Anderson Alan Bethe Gene Bielefeld Craig Davis Janet Deines Hubert Farres Linda Guthals Hilton He I bach SOPHOMORE Greg Jacobson Niki KuJ-.n Donald Lauxman Patti Lay Donald Lorson Joyce Lorson Patricia Lorson Phillip Lorson 28 Dwight Linder Kathy Morgan Shariine Morgan Kathy Neuschafer James Riedy Sharon Riedy Joyce Riffel Lane Rock Ronnie Rock Patricia Rufener Christine Sandow Larry Schlesener Alan Schlesener Wayne Schuster Steven Walker 29 Joan Backhus Steve Barrett Debra Cook James Davidson Gerald Dittman Jo Ann Donnelly Max Engle Kay Ettridge FRESH VIAM CLASS Ronald Goracke Terry Gruber Mark Haden Donna Hamilton Neal Jacobson Clark Jahnke Colleen Kandt Debra Lorson Sheila Lorson Lyle Reich Carol Riedy Robert Riffel Erick Rumold Willis Rutz Diana Ryff Gerri Sandow Chris Schlesener Ronnie Schlesener Saundra Schlesener Steven Schlesener Don Stevenson Diane Stites Linda Stroda 31 Junior class: Left to right, front row; Carolyn Riffel, treasurer; Sherry Schlesener, secretary; Carolyn Lorson, annual staff; back row; Craig Jahnke, president; Gene Donnelly, vice president; Dianne Whitehair, student council; David Ihde, annual staff; Charles Piper, reporter; Mike Beltz, student council (not pictured). FOOTBALL This year the Hope Lions were in a rebuilding state, as they had very few boys out who had any football experience at alL The Hope Lions won only one game in eight during the 1967 season. The lack of fundamentals, experience, and knowledge of the game and a small squad was a hinderance to us this year. In order to play the game this is a must. But as the year went on we could see the boys were getting the idea as to what they were to do. You must give your underclass' boys a chance to play as they will be your players of tomorrow, not play only Seniors.! Larry Gruber and Mark Riedy were elected as co-captains for the 1967 football season and were two of the more experienced men on the squad. Glen Riedy and Arthur Davidson who improved as the year went on were elected to the All Conference Team as defensive line backers. We are looking for a much better season next year and a larger squad than reported out this year. We also had a few injuries that hurt us. Craig Davis and Gene Brockmeier had broken arms. Gene Bielefeld and Ronnie Rock with knee injuries. The Lions started the season with two returning lettermen, Dennis Kerbs and Craig Jahnke. Also helping bring the Lions along this year were Mark Riedy, Larry Gruber, Gene Brockmeier, Arthur David- son and Ron Rock. As the season got under way the Lions dropped two quick games and then the boys got together and won 9 straight, including a 1st place finish in the Century League Tournament. As the season started in the final stages the Lions found themselves in contention for the Century League Crown and won it by one game over Solomon. The Hope Lions finished the regular season with a 12-5 record. To accom- plish this success, the Lions have shown much hard work, good training, and a sense of loyalty to the team and school.
