And what I can do 1 will do; And by the Grace of God I will! Nancy was always the ideal girl. She set her standards high and showed lead- ership in each activity in which she participated. It was her willing attitude which encouraged us most when things seemed so hopeless. Nancy's goal was perfection and she never did anything less than her best. In the hearts of everyone who knew Our Nancy there is an especially warm spot. In fondest memories, we the Seniors dedicate this annual to Nancy Ellen Feeney. 5 LET TRUTH AND WISDOM LEAD Mrs. Laverna Wuthnow Secretary Mr. Donald P. Little Personal Message by Mr. Little My philosophy of education is based upon the needs of young adults in a rapidly changing democratic society. We are con- tinually adding courses of study to keep you abreast of the times. May the changing so- ciety and changing world create in you a challenge to succeed and to take advantage of the many opportunities offered to you through education. We strive to fit the school and educational opportunities to your desires and needs. We do not try to fit you to the school. May the benefits be yours. I am keenly interested in the success and welfare of this Senior class. May I extend to you the heartiest congratulations upon completion of your high school career. 8 Board °s Education Cecil Kuhn Milton Jacobson Howard Fry Personal Message Self-reliance is an American legacy. Some may measure it as individual initiative, others backbone. But whatever it is called, it is a precious ingredient within the char- acter of each one of us, one which we must not lose. The educational institutions located in this great land are geared to the extent that this basic element, confidence in one's self, is promoted during the sojourn of the stu- dent. Graduation day offers an opportunity to pause and evaluate this principle, among other attainments, and resolve to continue its progress. Your local community has fostered your educational journey thus far with the hope that the knowledge gained will be of com- mensurate value to you in your future wel- fare. The Board of Education extends to you, the graduation class of 1966, our congrat- ulations and best wishes upon the successful completion of a task well done. 9 Mrs. Rhodes Mr. Stal|or Mr. Ricker Mr. Daerr Mrs. Foster Miss Gerdes MR. I am standing again at an old familiar place, the front door of the Hope Rural High School. It is the first day of another school term--just twenty years since I started my senior year here. The students are starting to enter the build- ing and are not a bit more eager than my classmates and I were to become educated young men and women. And speaking of classmates, here comes Sandy Abeldt. She has given up sheep raising and is now raising her own little lambs. Norman Benhardt has lost his pilots license because he was watching the hostesses cross the runway on a windy day. Donna Brockmeier and her giggle are now employed by Mr. Clean Bubble Bath. Jesse Burwell and his bass fiddle playing buddy are now playing music with Freddie the Freeloader and his tin pan alley gang. Bill Calkins has been deported because he caught Charlie the Tuna. Dan Cox is still trying to find out what Viceroys have that the other twenty cigarettes don't have. Jim Eshbaugh is now working in the Ford Factory riding a horse back and forth to work because his 3rd fan belt broke. Ted Farres found out that his desire for Secretarial Training is exceeded only by his de- , sire to train secretaries. Leon Gantenbein now has a very famous wrestling team. Of course they don't win many meets, but what do you expect out of an all girl team? Bryan Gravatt is a missionary in Southern Africa leading civil rights demonstrations. Sharon Haram is still writing letters; only now she is writing letters to her mother. Seems she joined the Marines with her husband and I hear they have lots of little waves. Kathy Hodgden and her Hamm's beer bear buddies dammed up a stream and resorted to being proprietor of the Presidents Program of Physical Fitness for Males. Joe Hodgden has a very promising job with the Government. He is now busy painting purple lines down the middle of the highway. Julie Hostetter and Larry are now married and living in Denver. They both were working at the Colorado General Hospital but now they have their own little hospital staff of interns and nurses. Erlyn Howard has decided to leave the men alone and raise her ten girls alone. Jerry Jacobson found out he was dead right about being a Mortician and is finishing his apprenticeship at the Eshbaugh Funeral Home. Joyce Kandt is now a shoe cobbler, she was the best known shoe cobbler in High School. Lynne Lay didn't make it as a bacteriologist so she took English Literature and now she is consequently for this simple reason rewriting the Webster Dictionary. Jim Lorson is now on a ship-shape ship shaping ships--l mean shipping shapes. Greg Morgan is now test driving cars for all the car companies because if they run when he gets through with them they will run for anyone. Sheri Neuschafer is usually a good beauty operator however sometimes she gets her solu- tion a little too strong. Her motto is baldness is always neat. Janis Piper didn't believe blondes had more fun till she took up washing windows 24 hours a day, inside and out, at the Boy's Dorms at K-State. Shirley Piper has now transferred from Spanish to Russian and is now working for the U.N. and Art. Gail Rock has quit making Shorthand brief forms and is now wearing them. Sharon Rohrer has given up her summer time hobby of playing on a softball team because now she has her own team of little leaguers. Margaret Schaaf is now combing the beach for any lost contact. Floy Ann Stites is still an operator but she is no longer at the switchboard. Sherry Stroda majored in Home Economics at K-State and is now playing house in the boy's dorm. Art Timm is now giving lyceums on different subjects--brown-nosing and communism. Jessie Timm is still working on his book report and current events for American History. Steve Whitehair was always good with animals; he is now driving the Budweiser Clydesdale Team and still celebrating his 18th birthday. 23 You ready Here The Cast Betty Lou . . Bernadine . . When grade school kids read it their eyes shine and they think someday. Someday 1 will be star of the basketball team, queen of homecoming, a member of that marvelous band, the lead in the play, dancing at the prom, attending the show and breakfast afterwards. Someday I'll be in high school. Then we, the seniors, read it, and each page says, Remember the football games on those cold fall evenings, those nerve-wrecking basketball games, the short noon hours, the hurried preparation for music contests and class plays, those good old class meetings when no one would be quiet, comparing lateness of after- party hours, homecoming dances, dating problems of both boys and girls, those good old exams we hated so much, the lazy hum of study hall, the sneak, and last but not least--graduation. We learned too. Besides the history and English absorbed, we learned the meaning of friendship. We made many mistakes, but we learned from them. The hopes and triumphs and disappointments, the silly fun, and the proud and yet sad feeling of finally graduating--we've tried to put them all into this book for you. So we give you the 1965-66 Lions Roar. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed living it. In the Misty Moonlight , the theme, was the setting in which umbrellas, spar- kling rain, and misty flowers helped carry the mood of excitement along. Our very delicious meal was prepared by the Juniors' mothers, with Mrs. Eshbaugh as the General Chair- man. Mr. Howard Fry then gave a speech which held the interest of everyone. For entertainment at the Banquet we had the Balladiers from Manhatten. The Banshees from Lindsborg played for the dance. The Juniors would like to say Thank You to everyone who helped in preparing for the special night.
