THE LIONS’ ROAR HOPE RURAL HIGH SCHOOL Hope, Kansas Cheryl Kuhn, Editor With Sincere Appreciation Mrs. Leila Rhodes and Mr. William Yakle have been the senior sponsors here at Hope High School for a number of years. During these years they have spent much time helping and guiding the senior classes who have come under their sponsorship. We have a feeling of security when we realize that as adults we shall always have the privilege of coming back to Hope High School for encouragement and guidance from either of these highly respected teachers. With a sincere appreciation for the hours of work spent in teaching and counseling, and for the true friendship they have for all the students in Hope High School; we the Annual Staff of 1964 dedicate this Lions’ Roar toour senior spon- sors, Mrs. Leila Rhodes and Mr. William Yakle. 2 Our 1964 yearbook is published in memory of the 35th President of the United States. DONALD P. LITTLE Superintendent MRS. LAVERNA WUTHNOW Secretary PERSONAL MESSAGE BY DONALD P. LITTLE My philosophy of education is based upon the needs of young adults in a rapidly changing democratic society. We are continually adding courses of study to keep you abreast of the times. May the changing society and changing world create in you a challenge to succeed and to take advantage of the many opportunities offered to you by education. We strive to fit the school and educational opportunities to your desires and needs. We do not try to fit you to the school. May the benefits be yours. I am keenly interested in the success and welfare of this Senior Class. May I extend to you the heartiest congratulations upon completion of your high school career. 6 Personal Message by Cecil W. Kuhn Graduation from high school terminates twelve impor- tant years of your lives. These years spent studying, asso- ciating, and competing with fellow students in sports, music, and other activities have helped you to know your capabil- ities and future ambitions. Pause now, only to choose your path into life; the de- cision is yours. Whether you pursue further formal educa- tion or some type of employment, you will find education a continual process. The Board of Education has been privileged, along with your teachers, in helping you attain your present goal. It is now our pleasure to congratulate you seniors, and wish you further success and happiness. CECIL W. KUHN Clerk Board of Education HOWARD L. FRY Director MILTON JACOBSON Treasurer 7 Steps make an ascent much easier than climbing a rugged hill without this help. One realizes this when ascending the steps at a spot of nature such as Seven Falls, Colorado. By the use of the steps leading up to the Falls, the ascent is made much easier than it would be to climb the steep mountain side without their help. In high school some of the steps which help us in our climb in life are the classes which help us develop into better family members and citizens. Other classes help prepare us for occupations or professions. Activities, including music and sports, enlarge our interests, teach leadership and dependability, and make life more en- joyable. We anticipate a brighter future be- cause of the four years the class of 1964 have worked and participated in classes and activities in Hope Rural High School. STEPS TO THE FUTURE 8 FACULTY The MR. This year we are featuring the activities of a few of our teachers. Mr. Stanley Ricker, our band director, has had the honor of being selected to appear with the Warren Covington Band, which is the former Tommy Dorsey Band. He played string bass at appearances in Topeka, Wichita, and Lincoln, Nebraska. This is the band that performed at the Night Show at Hutchinson this year. Mr. Gerald Dorsch was elected treasurer of the Dickinson County Teachers' Association last spring. Aspart of the duties of this office, he is a member of the County Teachers' Association Ex- ecutive Council. Hope Rural High School basketball coach, John Heidebrecht, does a little playing himself along with his coaching duties. Mr. Heidebrecht has been a player- coach intermittantly during the last four years with the strong McPherson Mimco basketball team. Beginning his player- coaching duties after laying out of college one year, Mr. Heidebrecht has become a part of the strongest A.A.U. basketball team in this area. Comprised primarily of Honors leges, McPherson Mimico has been a winner of six A.A.U. and town team tournaments during this period. Last year Mimico missed a chance to go to the National A.A.U. tournament at Denver when they were beaten in the final second of play at the Missouri Valley A.A.U. finals. This year the McPherson team has placed second at the Abilene Cedar Crest Tourney and also at the Area Six A.A.U. Invitational Basketball Tournament at Ponca City. Mr. Heidebrecht plays guard and assumes coaching responsibilities of this team when his schedule permits. Mrs. Florence Hatfield was appointed a member of the Home Economics Publi- cations Committee of the American Vo- cational Association. This appointment is for a period of three years. This com- mittee is responsible for evaluating, se- lecting, and writing booklets and pamphlets to be published by the National Vocational Association. Mr. Williams Yakle is currently the Vice-President of the County Teachers' Association. He is the program chairman for 1963-1964, he is also a member of the County Teachers' Association Executive Council. Because of this elective office, he will be the President of the County Teachers' Association for 1964-1965. We the Seniors, will to all, our ability to be not only conceited but to be perfect. Class Prophecy The year is 1974. In his luxurious home on Space Center Two near Mars, Ron Haire is found looking at his high school class picture. Wondering what his former classmates were doing by now, he decided to tune them in on his Space-o-Vision and find out. Here we are in New York City where Shirley Brockmeier has set up a world famous finishing school for career girls. A special course offered at this school is How to Catch a Man, which Shirley is taking right along with the girls. Connie Davis has now graduated to head soda jerk at what is now Lonnie Riffel's Drug Store in Hope. Connie and Lonnie don't need to hire any help as they have a number of little jerks running around. Carol Downey is now happily married and is living in Florida where she and Bill are raising their own little Air Force. It seems Dan Falen's dream has finally come true. He is happily married and lives with his wife and 13 children in their modest apartment in Hope's new develop- ment center. Dan supports his family by writing for Mad Magazine. The scene switches to the White House in Washington, D.C. We find that Don Haire has finally worked his way to the top as we always knew he would. He is the head janitor for the President—his wife. Ron Schlesener and Joe Hoffman are now the best racing team in the country, yet at this race here at Indianapolis Ron is racing alone. It seems that while Joe was practicing some of his fancy road work he was caught by Elmer who is now our county sheriff. Cheryl Kuhn and Marilyn Lorson are private nurses for Doctor Casey and Doctor Kildare who have gone into partnership and now own the most modern clinic west of the Mississippi. Although their bosses keep them quite busy, they still find time to chase men. Dean Lehman is now the owner of the Hope Creamery and is doing a fine job as the head butcher. As Dean was quite a cut up in high school this job seems to fit him fine. Suddenly the screen of the Space-o-Vision goes black. As the picture clears we find Rick Holloway pulling himself from the ruins of what was the chemistry lab at KU. While Rick was watching his shapely chemistry teacher he mixed the wrong things together. As Rick is in his 10th year of schooling you would think he would know better. Sharon Pschigoda is now happily married and is kept busy raising a family of 5 little spacemen. The children seem to enjoy living on Space Center Two near Mars. Dave Rohrer who decided to join the Navy and see the world, was disappointed when he was assigned land duty as he thought the Waves would be much more interesting. Ray Stites is the head marine biologist at Scranton University and is doing a fine job, but he has not learned how to swim rapidly enough to catch a mermaid. Linda Weber has just recently graduated from the Nebraska Business College and has a job as private secretary to Raymond Wolf who is the head basketball coach here at good old Hope High. We're not sure why a coach would need a private secre- tary, but then, It's whatever's right.” At the famous Playboy Club in Los Angeles we find Ken Weber who is the sole owner of the entire line of clubs. As Ken is still the playboy he used to be, he can't resist pulling his bunnies tails. The Cast Senior Play CAST OF CHARACTERS Prison Matron.......... Bailiff................ Judge Heath............ Planning meeting in the cottage. “Farewell, Hope High School99 During the year as we the staff worked on this yearbook we probably felt at times that it just wasn't worth all the time and effort put on it; yet as this school year draws to a close we realize that in future years this yearbook will be our link with the past----- our high school days and the warm friendships we made during the years we attended Hope Rural High School. We hope, that in future years as you turn the pages of this book, many wonderful memo- ries will come back to you. You will again feel the excitement and anticipation surround- ing the big game of the season, and you will feel the uncontained joy that accompanies a victory over a tough opponent. You will re- member the fun had at the all school parties ----all the last minute cramming you did for that chemistry test---the thrill you felt as the curtain rose on your Senior play-- the romance of the Junior-Senior prom on that warm spring evening--and the sobriety of your graduation night. We the annual staff of 1964 sincerely hope that in this yearbook we have given to each of you a cherished remembrance of your high school days. Cheryl Kuhn, student photographer, at work.
