Mrs. Backhus, in her quiet modest way, is a friend to everyone. She is always happy and cheerful. In addition to spending many hours helping her husband with his work, she is always willing to help everyone, both teachers and students. The first person you usually see when you enter the school building every morning and the last when you leave at night is Mr. Backhus. While he is on duty around the building, he is something like a second counselor. He is always willing to discuss our problems with us, which is most helpful and appre- ciated by the students. He spends many hours helping with our activities, such as the Junior Senior Prom, Homecoming, F.H.A., and Athletic Banquet. He is most helpful with commu- nity organizations that hold meetings in the buildings; such as 4-H, Boy Scouts and Saddle Club. Mr. and Mrs. Backhus have also taken their time to make our school a clean and enjoyable place to be. It is with great sincerity that the Annual Staff of 1963 dedicate this book to Mr. and Mrs. William Backhus. 4 WINGS OF PROGRESS The Hope community has stretched its wings far out through the years and has progressed in many areas. In reviewing the history of our community, we learn that the first frame house in Hope township was built by the August Klingberg family. The first while child born here was their daughter. The late Dr. W.A. Klingberg was a son. The first school in Hope township was taught by Ledora Fry in a small log house in the Ashton Cemetery section. In 1880, District 100 was or- ganized and the first building was built on the northeast corner of the town. The Eisenhower family lived in Hope in the early days. An early day Hope pupil, Mrs. Annie Hammond once said, The early teachers urged the children to pattern after Dave Eisenhower, because he always walked so erect and was always neatly and cleanly dressed. In 1887, the second schoolhouse in the district, at a cost of $5000 was built, and was in full use that fall. It consisted of four rooms and was located directly back of the present brick building. The superintendent, C.M. Harger, taught history, mathematics and coached athletics. The other teacher taught English and Latin. Three years of language were required. The students had no choice of subjects. An addition was made to the second school building in 1901, for the purpose of housing a four year high school. This addition cost $2000. There was an attendance of thirty students. The first class to graduate from the four year high school was in 1907 and consisted of Grant Stauffer and Gladys Ketchersid. In 1908, the grad- uating class was composed of five people; Merl Palmer, Leroy Heidenreich, Earl Tilton, Ann Miller and Florence Palmer. The bus system was started in 1939 under Superintendent R.B. Gilkerson. In 1949, bonds of $135,000 were issued for the building of the Gymnasium Auditorium. This build- ing was first used in 1950. A much appreciated contribution to our school is the Oscar Stauffer Scholarship, established in 1949 and still continued today. Stauffer said, I just wanted to remember the schools of Hope be- cause they had been so kind to me. In 1953, the Home Economics Cottage was a new addition. Since 1953, the Kindergarten building has been added. On the third floor, four class rooms have been made from the old auditorium. A breezeway, storage room, and a concession stand have been built between the two buildings. Today our high school curriculum consists of 48 units. The students have a wide choice of sub- jects. Numerous extra curricular activities are available such as athletics, music, and plays. Many of our alumnae and former citizens are world citizens today. They have made their contri- butions toward making the world a better place to live. A few of them are people such as John Cameron Swayze, a news commentator on one of the major networks in New York City; John Lay, a former high school teacher, who left here to teach in Europe, then Japan and now in Germany; Eunice Morrison Devers, a missionary to Bolivia: Gladys Shank Naylor was in Ecuador and now is in Switzerland where her husband is working with Church World Service. Hope has come a long way through the years and is a school of which all of us can be proud. We know that its wings has brought progress to our community and world. We, the graduating class of 1963, will long remember our school and as we spread our wings and progress in the future, we shall share the happy memories of this wonderful place. Progress Graduating class of 1908 Hope football team in 1930 New brick school building built in 1921 MR. DONALD P. LITTLE Superintendent My philosophy of education is based upon the needs of young adults in a democratic society. The needs must create a challenge for the young adults to receive personal sat- isfaction in doing things. Therefore, we have guided and directed the schools to fit you. We have not tried to fit you to the school. May the benefits be yours. I am keenly interested in the success and welfare of this Senior Class. May I ex- tend to you the heartiest congratulations upon MRS. laverna wuthnow completion of your high school career. Secretary 8 CECIL W. KUHN Clerk Board of Education HOWARD L. FRY Director PERSONAL MESSAGE BY HOWARD L. FRY The aim of education is to enable a person to continue his learning. Certainly, our great state of Kansas has been keenly aware of this fact. Opportunities in education have progressed steadily since the admission of the state as a part of the union in 1861. The well chosen state motto, To the stars through diffi- culties, has long been an instrument of measure whereby the students in our school system are able to recognize the impor- tance of diligent study. This tends to help the members of the senior class of our high school to realize in principle the value of knowledge. The evaluation then may be assumed that knowledge comes but wisdom lingers. The Board of Education is intensely interested in the welfare and the success of the graduating class of 1963. It is then with pleasure that we extend to you, the senior class of Hope Rural High School, our congratulations and best wishes upon the completion of your high school career. 9 A Circle Tour of Hope High Approaching the school grounds from the north, we come upon the Home Eco- nomics building. From this miniature home has walked more than one-hundred future homemakers. i To complete our circle tour, we ar- rive at Stauffer Field. Good sportsmanship and citizenship are not only taught in the classrooms but are developed in this field through long hours of practice and inter school games. Our next stop is the gymnasium audi- torium. President Kennedy's physical fitness program is fulfilled here, plus our athletic events, class plays, and banquets. Moving forward on our tour, we have a nice view of the vocational agriculture department. The fully equipped shop en- ables our future farmers to learn about farm and livestock management, welding, and building and repairing farm equipment. Supreme Court Building The MR. Student Council KEN GANTENBEIN Stuco President The Student Council plays an important part of the overall organization of the Hope High School. It is the students' voice and means of expressing their wishes in the way the school is run. It is the responsibility of the Student Council to see that the problems of the students are considered and agreeable solutions are found. In student activities the Student Council is the guiding force. They organize and finance the homecoming activities. Special events, such as dress-up days and Sponge Week are sponsored. Several all school parties were also the responsibility of the Student Council, all of which were greatly enjoyed by the students. Two of the special assemblies sponsored by the Student Council, the Christmas assembly and the panel discussion by the last year's graduates, who are furthering their education, are especially enjoyed by the students. A special project this year was promot- ing the new Pep Club. The Hope High School Student Council has done a very good job this year of accepting and carrying out their responsibilities. This was the first year the Pep Club was officially organized. The response from the school and community has been overwhelming. Snappy uniforms, good organization and effective rallys have helped add more enthusiasm and school spirit at ball games. This is witnessed by the fact that the student attendance at games has doubled and tripled. Many citizens in the community have commented about the appearance, good conduct, and sportsmanship displayed by the members and student body at games. With results like this, the Pep Club is certainly an asset to the school and community. The Hope Chapter of the Future Farmers of America has been working this year to try to achieve their goals and uphold the traditions of their organization. Members of FF A are students of vocational agriculture in rural public schools. It is the organization's responsibility to devel- op these members and provide efficient, productive, modern farmers for tomorrow. Initiation of freshmen into the organization is one of the highlights of the year for Hope FFA er's and all other students also. Certainly every member who has been through this expe- rience will never forget it. All FFA members have certain projects which they carry out in connection with vocational agriculture. These projects not only increase their knowledge of farming, but also teach mem- bers to accept responsibility and have pride in their achievements. The FFA also annually awards its members for their achievements, the ones who are most deserving and have done their best. The Hope Chapter of FFA is providing opportunities for members to develop into modern future farmers, a much needed asset to our rural community. Learning to live more useful and satisfying lives through our Future Homemaker activi- ties. All F.H.A. programs and activities aredesigned to achieve this goal, in order to improve every member and to promote a better world. Hope is fortunate to have one of the most active F.H.A. programs for its size, in the state. They actively participate in district and state meetings by attendance, providing members, of- ficers and leaders. In our school they assume responsibility by promoting all school parties,” maintaining a bulletin board for the students benefit, and performing other important projects of service to the community. Through these activities the F.H.A. members learn to get along with people and also learn the importance of performing humanitarian service for others. The girls also enjoy programs which help them plan for their future, get along with others, and further their interests in certain fields. Through excellent organization, programs, projects, leadership and activities, the Hope Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America has done an exceptional job of achieving its purposes and providing excellent service to the school and community. 1'heryl Kuhn, Degrees Chairman; Jackie Stroda, Recreational Leader; Joyce Riedy, Historian; Kay Denny, Pianist; Lynda Klingberg, Treasurer; Connie Davis, Vice-President; Lynda Miller, Pres- ident; Janet Plank, Secretary; Letha Long, Report- er; Cheryl Davis, Stuco Representative; Linda Sravatt, Librarian; Miriam Wingerd, Song Leader; Vlary McLain, Freshman Representative. The Hope High School Stage Band is a non-credit extracurricular organization. The in- structor and students volunteer their time and effort to make it a success. For this extra effort the students are rewarded by being given the opportunity to increase their education and mastery of instrumental music. They learn new types of music such as: jazz, blues, and other popular varieties not ordinarily taught in regular band practice. The members of Stage Band spend many hours in practice, but also have lots of fun together. The Hope Stage Band has performed for Hope-Lions Club Pancake Day, and other community activities, as well as performing for special programs. These students learn to cooperate and work together, providing a fine example of what talented and industrious students can accomplish. Farewell, Hope High School” Everyone that graduates from High School should feel that they have made their mark, and left something of value. We on this year's annual staff hope that this book which we have compiled, is that something of value. We have sincerely tried to make a complete, accurate, pictorial and historical account of one year in the history of Hope High School. We have done this in order to preserve fond memories of our nigh school days, that will be clear and vivid for us to remember always. Also preserved is a record of achievements and of time and effort we spent in our classes, activities, and organizations. In the future, as we gaze through this book, old friendships and strong ties will, we hope, be warmly recalled. These things are the purpose for a High School yearbook. Many times, no doubt, we on the annual staff felt that our work was unend- ing, and little was being accomplished, but as we see the finished product we realize that we have something which we can leave to the school and student body. This is your local announcer Kenny Gantenbien bringing you the news of the Class of 1963. My new 1973 Falcon seems to run even better on the sidewalks than my old one did. We just received word from Fort Hays College where Sylvia Brockmeier is working very hard as a Math Professor. She has one problem yet unsolved-how to catch that man. Our career woman, Linda Gravatt is now out of Business school and is getting paid pretty good for just sitting on her bosses lap. Merlene Birka is now married to an obstetrician. They are very happy raising their own nursery. Cheryl Davis is a housewife on a farm south of Tampa, Kans. Cheryl says farming's alright as long as she knows her share is in the Tampa Bank. Wayne Henricks is now living just south of Hope. I've been told that he still has a liking for Rocks, and as a matter of fact he's been collecting them too. Evelyn Walter is now part owner of the Hope Standard Station. I heard that while in High School she used to spend a lot of her Sunday afternoons there. I wonder why ? Janet Plank is working in Topeka, Kansas as a Secretary for the Governor. Janet's favorite sport is still catting around, only now it's in her husbands Model T Ford. Karen Anderson is at Wichita working as a registered nurse. Karen gets a big kick out of tickling the patient's feet. t Lynda Miller seems to be having a little bit of trouble with her Home Ec. girls. They just can t seem to understand why they have to put zippers in cakes. But just the same she enjoys teaching at DCCHS. Lynda Little is teaching Phy. Ed. Classes at K-State. Lynda say's that she is really trying to keep in shape, with all those boys in her class. You see, they chase her five laps around the track every day. Joyce Reidy is a teacher at Woodbine high school where she teaches History and Government. She's finally decided to enter the stone age, her husband's a brick layer. Tom McLain enjoys his work very much at Kirkwood Lodge in Missouri as night watchman, especially during Senior Days. The manager informed us that he's got a way with those Seniors. From the White House in Washington we received word that the first Lady President, Letha Long, is doing quite well in her newly elected office. Jackie Stroda has finally tied the Knots and is living in Wichita. Jackie says marriage isn't so bad as long as you have a gang to run around with. Jackie now has five little ones in her gang. Leroy Timm and his wife are now working in Wichita as beauticians. Leroy finally found out you can't beat those pin-up girls so he joined them. Marion Lauxman is still working on the Railroad. He agrees that the train will get him to Herington faster than that old rod of his will. We are now signing off with the news of the class of '63. See you next year same time same station. Dancing and drinking! for The setting for the skit Fashionable Dreams the May 9, 1963 style show. F.H.A. officers for 1962-63 F.H.A. Activities Our F.H.A. Chapter plays a very important part in each of our lives. It has built a strong foundation for what we will be in the future. As stated in the creed it helps us to face the future with warm courage and high hope. One of the enjoyable activities we have had in F.H.A. since March was the Autograph party. We had loads of fun autographing annuals and eating. On May 9, 1963, we had the F.H.A. style show, Fashionable Dreams, and the installation of officers for 1963-64. Also we had senior recognition in which the F.H.A. Chapter gave each senior girl a gift in remembrance of them. These are just a few of the many wonderful activities carried on through F.H.A. We think F.H.A. really proves to be worth the time and effort that each one puts in to it. Don't you?
