What does it mean to us? First and foremost it means an education. These are the classrooms where we studied and learned. Most of the time we really got down to business, not only to get an impressive grade to show our parents, but to gain more knowledge to curb that inadequate feeling we’ll have when we face an adult world. But these buildings hold more than a formal eduction for us. We experience the anticipation and excitement of a pep rally before a big football game. There were the crazy antics of beatnik students during Sponge Week and the formal atmosphere of Dress Up Day with girls in high heels and boys in suits and ties. What could equal the thrill the actors felt the moment the curtain rose on the senior play? The musicians in the school delighted at hearing the playback of a snappy cha-cha the stage band had just recorded. And basketball—this is the game that taught us all sportsmanship; this is the year we learned how to be good winners; this, to many students, athletes, and girls alike, was the most exciting part of the whole school year. Then there was the romance of the Junior-Senior Banquet which the juniors had as much fun preparing as the seniors did receiving. These are the buildings that will leave cherished memories with us when our high school days have ended. LARRY ABELDT F. F. DeWayne Backhus, still a very attractive bachelor, is now the dean of the Colorado Women's College. Now a happily married farmer with ten kids, we find Eldred Brockmeier. Ten years haven't changed Lynn Cook much, he's still chasing all the available girls who would work to support him. We find Gordy Davis now the Olympic Champion Miler. Judy Deines is the head secretary of U.S. Steel, and is trying to steal a man for her own home use. Glenda Engle and her five little ones are the co-owners of the Frigid in Herington. Still the executive type we find Jerry Eshbaugh the head of Renault Inc. in France. John Gruber is now Warner Brothers best known comedian. He seems to have lost all his shyness. What do we see here? Rano Gruber in one of his many new Cadillac cars. He is the biggest oil tycoon in Texas. Tom Haire will receive his diploma from beauty school this year, after ten years of hard work. The Metropolitan Opera is Shirley Helbach's part time occupation along with teaching English at Yale University, where she seems to be making time with all the male students. Here is Chuck Kuhn, who is engineering a new bridge across the Bering Strait. Lois Long remains Dickinson county's number one cherry pie baker. We have our own Clara Barton, Dolores Lorson. She is a nurse on the moon. Hope has a new proprietor of the A.G. Store. Wilbert Lueth is doing a fine job. Bob Meyer is teaching Psychology and Coaching at West Point. The co-owner of Renault Inc. is none other than Gayle Morgan. She still lollygags with her husband Jerry. Mike Morgan is now the heavy-weight champion of the world. Hope has added a new, prosperous business to it's main street. Tom Nelms is the head of the Reducing Salon for Women, with a branch in Tampa. After graduating from business school, Evelyn Rickenbrode traveled around the world. Now she has settled down on a farm north of Hope with her one and only. Bill Scott is working on a special body building course for American youth. Patricia Stevens has been replaced by Darlene Stites, who has become a world famous model. The farmers have finally been organized under the leadership of Edgar Wingard. The price of wheat has risen to $5.00 a bushel. I 2 Future Homemakers F. H. A. IN '61-’62 The school year of 1961-1962 has been a very busy year for the Future Homemakers of America. During the summer, Phyllis Wuthnow attended the National F. H. A. meeting in St. Louis. Missouri, as the Kansas candidate for Vice-President of the Central Region. Mrs. Hatfield attended as Phyllis’s sponsor. The officers, chapter mothers, and sponsor had much fun at the Officer’s Retreat, at Herington Lake, in August. In October, the Freshman Homemaking Class prepared a Swedish buffet for the F. H. A. After supper, Freshman Initiation was held. Another October activity was the District III F. H. A. meeting at Pratt. Phyllis gave a report of the National Meeting, and the Hope Triple Trio sang the Xreed Chant. The Following week, four Juniors gave an original television skit, Making Money Count, at Great Bend. SNOW-FLAKE BALL Merle Shugart-King Sharon Pschogodia-Queen Spring activities included Heart Sister Week, and the State meeting at Topeka. Here the chapter was entertained at the Governor's Mansion. Annual Staff The Annual Staff devoted much time and effort in the production of this book. To begin a busy work year, several mem- bers of the Staff attended the Yearbook Conference at Manhattan, Kansas, to learn and gain ideas about constructing a good yearbook. Our cover was chosen, a dummy copy was prepared by the editor, and several days were spent selling ad- vertisements in Hope and the surrounding area. Then the Staff got down to bus iness in some hard work sessions. The Staff worked diligently to meet the deadline. Everyone had a feeling of accomplish- ment when they handed in their finished pages to the editor. Student Council The Student Council is the student governing body of Hope High School. Each class and organization is represented in the council by one or two students. The council works with the faculty, administration, and students to help enact laws and promote better understanding. Bob Meyer, Student Council president, led an active administration this year. First they became interested in starting a Teen Town for the teen-agers of Hope and brought the issue before the community. They set up a new system for all-school parties, and assumed the responsibility for two of them. The Student Council originated Sponge Week, which all the students enjoyed very much. Some of their regular duties included planning and presenting a Christmas program to the high school. They also sponsored a very impressive homecoming ceremony. Santa (Larry Abeldt) and Bill Backhus (Kenny Gantenbein). Bob Meyer, Student Council president. Classy beatniks. Surprised, Lynda? Sponge Week The wackiest week of the whole school year was sponsored by the Student Council. ’’Sponge Week” ran from November 13-18. Each day the students carried out a different stunt. One day they wore bows in their hair; another, colors that clashed terrible. On White Elephant Day everyone exchanged ’’gifts” that consisted of something they didn't want. Also, the seniors took over the job of teaching in all classes for one day. Probably the most fun was Beatnik Day. Some of the costumes were really way out. Sponge Week was concluded by a dance on Saturday night. This was in Sadie Hawkins style, with the girls asking boys for dates. Preston Shugart and Cheryl Davis were crowned King and Queen Sponge. Class Night 3 Lynn Just couldn’t stand up straight at Phantom Acres. The long, wild bus ride. Aw. Harry! 1 didn't mean to do it. Canoeing and swimming—two big attractions at the lodge. The Seniors had the time of their lives during their three day stay at Kirkwood Lodge, located on the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Boating, swimming, sun- bathing, and eating delicious meals were all part of each exciting day. In the evening everyone gathered around to square dance to Flip Flippo's calls and take part in a talent show presented by Seniors from all the school there. Sleep was an unimportant matter to the students, but Harry, the night watchman, tried unsuccessfully to quiet them down. During their stay the Hope Seniors made many new friends, had a lot of fun in the sun, and came home saying that they'd never forget dear old Kirkwood. Mr. Yakle and Jerry escaped to their room to catch forty winks. Evelyn really moved on her water bike. Cute little brats, aren't they? Those square dances were swingin'! The waitress were dressed in mu-mus with flowers in their hair and leis around their necks. The program consisted of ten Hawaiian students from Emporia. The magician, the two dancers, and the band were enjoyed by everyone. I have a notion to turn you over my knee and give you a spanking!” Alice Van Thorp . . Myra Hibbert . . . Mrs. Hobson ....
