HUMOR ,al ii Dedication We, the Annual Staff of Hope Rural High School have chosen to dedicate the 1958 Lions Roar to Mr. Ray Nonken the wonderful person we have come to know as a teacher, coach, philosopher, and counselor. His calm nature and dry humor have made a lasting impression on all of us. During the ten years he has taught at Hope, Mr. Nonken has helped many a student to solve his particular problems. As head coach at our high school for a number of years, he made a very definite contribution to our athletic program. It is with great sincerity that we dedicate this annual to Mr. Ray Nonken. . ' v I ml Mr. Jack Sloan, as Superintendent, LaVerna Wuthnow is our efficient directs the work of the School Board school secretary, and faculty, who work together to give the students of Hope High School the best of education. The Administration , A building is just a building until you add a group of students and a good administration. Then instead of just a building you have -a school where the youths of today are taught to be the citizens of tomorrow. School bifsiness, problems, and worries are taken care of by the people we know as our administration, and a school could n6t function without their work. The school board members give FACULTY MEMBERS their time for our school. They FIRST ROW: David Roper, Florence Hatfield are: Royal Meuli. JUNIOR AND SENIOR HOMEMAKING CLASS style their clothing projects. Vocational Homemalcing And F H A. The goal for Vocational Homemaking is to help the students as family members to improve personal, family, and community living. The Homemaking Program has three related parts. They are class experiences, F. H. A. , and home exper- iences. Each of the three parts teaches homemaking skills, helps the individual to understand themselves, their families and the people in the world about them. ln Future Homemakers of America three degrees may be earned, the Junior Degree, Chapter Degree, and State Homemaker Degree. Home projects in the areas of family relations, foods, child care, home management, housing, cloth- ing and health are carried out by the time the third year of homemaking is completed. These seven pro- jects are also required for the State Homemaker Degree. The capable Home Economics teacher is Mrs. Florence Hatfield, who received her A. B. degree at McPherson College, and her M. S. degree in 1939 at Kansas State College. She is also chapter adviser. HHS Basketball Our team fought hard this year we know. They have had little reason to rejoice and clebrate but their never-ceasing determi- nation to fight to the end was very evident. Their efforts were backed up by the ever- encouraging pep club. They hang up their suits this year with hope that next year they can reverse the outcome and come out on the top. Class or 1958 Reunion WHEN ? ? ? Homecoming of 1968 WHERE? ? ? Hope High School WHO? ? ? Graduates of 1958 When they graduated not many knew what they would be doing or not be doing in the next ten years. Now, ten years later, all twenty-one have returned to dear 'ole Hope High for the 1968 Homecoming Reunion. Ashley Anderson, attired in his black suit, has returned from his missionary post in the South Sea Islands where he preaches to the hula-hula girls. Just as in high school Sharon Beltz is busy as ever. She is doing triple-duty as a clerk in the grocery store, waiting on tables at Mom's Cafe and in her spare time she takes care of the Sauer's Seven. Deanna Black is now a model for the Girlish Girdles for Feminine Fatties Co. She plans to continue her work there for quite a stretch . The guy who never gave up in an argument in high school has now become a lawyer. Believe you me, Don Bohl hasn't lost a case yet! Little Marilyn Brockmeier has become a private secretary to one of I-Ierington's leading businessmen. She still has her eye on those Herington men. Sue Brown has .taken time out from her laboratory work to attend the reunion. She is attempting to perfect a new formula to remove freckles. It seems good to have Ron Davis back too. We see he has finally traded that gold class ring for a silver wedding band. The former Carmen Engle is now the better half in an ownership of a Frigid Queen ! Her six children are helping as the car-hops. As a registered nurse in the Walter Reed Hospital Carolyn Fike has more fun keeping the patients roaring with laughter. Everyone is glad to hear that Eula Ilczuk has been chosen Mother of the Year for showing her motherhood abilities in raising such a fine son. We understand Tom Hinkle has taken time out from his farm work where he sings I've Got Those Milk'em in the Mornin', Milk'em in the Evenin' Blues to be with his classmates. Being the first woman driver for the Greyhound Bus Lines, Anita Jacobson has chart- ered a special bus for this occasion. Loren Keller has become a dignified business executive. He makes his work interest- ing with a line of chorus girls as his secretaries. Marilynn Klingberg who has been slaving away on that little farm just outside of town has left the four little ones fcute and mindful as can bel with Donnie. Vonna Morgan is now the wife of a captain sai1ing the seas in their own private ship. They are fortunate in having a crew of their very own. As a hillbilly singer Sylvia Nely is doing her own entertaining on her dude ranch in Texas. Gordon Rhodes who couldn't bear to leave Hope High has returned to head the math and science department. He seems to enjoy working with figures! Ronnie Riffel has replaced Mel Allen as sportscaster and is living leisurely in his single room apartment on the 564, 000. 00 he won on a sports quiz program. The class of 1958 even has a celebrity, Donna Stroda, who was elected Miss America for l968. We were sorry to hear that she had to give up her title when her nine little ones came to congratulate her. At the Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka Marie Tobias is the head secretary and bookkeeper to General Mike. We are glad to find that Pat Wooster is doing quite well with her thirty children. Don get us wrongg she is now a school teacher. So we spend the rest of the evening chatting about the good 'ole days in 1958.
