Smith and those seniors who have had the privilege of knowing him, naturally believe that Latin is not only an ornament, but a necessity as well. A study of Latin develops 'Sword consciencel'-the ability to select the proper word from several with similar meaning. In addi- tion to this, a study of Latin aids in other areas such as modern foreign languages and literature. Once a student has had our one and only Latin instructor, he invariably is persuaded to continue his study of Latin.
