An EXPCTICIICC I Shall Never Forget PAULA ADELSON I hate had many experxences whrch at the t1me of thelr occurrence seemed to me to be the most lmportant lnfluence on my l1fe I was pos1t1ve that I could never forget the embarrasstng happentng whrch made my heart ache and my stomach do fancy trxcks or the pleasant mcldent whtch made mme a world of pxnk clouds and glorlously scented apple blossoms As time elapsed however the sharp Sflng of an unpleasant event wore off and the exultatron whnch I once felt after a joyous day ceased to exxst I have had only one experlence whtch I am sure w1ll never leave my memory because th1s expertence has xnfluenced my llfe tre mendously and will contlnue to do so I was tn the mnth grade at the t1me and was taklng a subject whlch I never could get lnterested tn Latxn One mornmg xn Latin class our board wrttmg was under Way when we were vnsnted by the school prmclpal I was rather nervous because not only dld I dread gettlng up to reclte before my Latln class but the thought of havxng the prmclpal hear me made my knees weak and my mlnd go blank I slumped down xn my front row seat tryxng to be as mconsplcuous as possxble when those frxghtful words whxch sent me to the black board were uttered How I managed to reach my destmatlon stxll remams a mystery because never were my knees more rubbery than at that moment There I stood chalk tn hand knowxng that I had no ldea at all how to conjugate the verb whxch was asslgned to me Suddenly some unseen power raxsed my shakmg hand to the board and began to wrxte What was placed on the board shocked me more than anyone else The verb completely and perfectly con Jugated was wrttten plamly 1n vtew of everyone I returned to my seat accepted the con gratulatxons of the prtnclpal and then strange thoughts ran through my mmd The work on the board could not be mme for I had never learned such a verb and I could not repeat th1s feat no matter how desperately I trxed Suddenly I reallzed that xt was God who had helped me For the first t1me IH my lxfe I strongly felt the influence whxch was to be the guldlng factor of my whole lxfe Slnce that moment I have felt a stronger unlty and closeness to God than I ever had tmagmed would be mme Whenever I am tempted to step out of lme the vxslon of the small g1rl standmg at the blackboard flashes clearly before my eyes and I quxckly change my plans Thxs perhaps seems lxke a tr1v1al xncndent to have such a serxous lmpllcatlon If I had ever been told before that I would first feel Gods Influence while standmg at a black board ln class I would have laughed and satd Why should He worry whether a nmth grade Latm student recite well or not? Th1s IS most lxkely the xmpresston whrch you re cexved and unless you have had such an ex perxence yourself you wtll doubt 1ts actual tty I sttll have a strange xndescrxbable feel mg about th1s experlence whxch made me belleve nn God more than ever Smce then the force whxch has gulded me both spxrrtually and morally has been God Fzfteen . 1 1 I 7 I I usual schedule of translation, recitation, and - - ' .
