Class Councils For the first time in the history of the school, the students began to take an active participation in the control of the school. Each home-room elected two delegates, a boy and a girl, who met in a class council with their advisers to discuss class affairs. These delegates served as the committee for the social affairs of the class, thereby doing away with the old class officer system. Each class council elected a boy and girl to serve as delegates to a school council. These twelve students met with Dr. Wood to consider the problems of the whole school. 6 HHFKY FIVH ORPCN -QBL UE AND WHITETi? NORMA AURILIE ABBOTT Age 18 Greenville, R. I. Coach Schein's forces finished, with ten points, second only to l.a Salle. Should Hope have played the cancelled game with Cranston and won. a likely possibility. only a single point would have separated La Salle from Hope. Cap Capasso. new line coach. developed one of the strongest lines in state schoolboy circles. Almost every member of the Hrst-string received some recognition on the various 'iAll teams throughout the state. lfil Abner Slater. Bob Corry. Marcone. Speigal. and St. Germaine emerged with the major share of honors, however. The season's record: Hope ............ . lZ East Providence , . 0 Hgpg . . . 'Sl Rogers . . . . , 0 Hope , . Basketball Already such phrases as the Formidable Five and the High Scorers from Hope have been used to describe Coach Schein's hoopsters. Should the team come up to present expectations. it will undoubtedly represent Rhode Island in the New llngland playoffs. Graduation is not taking any toll. fortunately. All-State center. Charles lVlelay Simon, is likely to repeat in this year's choices, and every other member of the team may be selected as All-State or All-Class A material. It is indeed a Formidable Five and. if the squad is DUI hampered by injuries or incligibility. it should prove to be one of the best in the history ol the school. 51 i-l?-BLUE AND WHITE-ggdia-..--A INDOOR TRACK SQUAD I3irst row. left to rightflr. This is the only public school in Rhode Islantl that has the advantage of a board track on which to practice, and this fact should count heavily in future meets. The Blue and White is not too well supplied with veterans, but under Coach Russell's capable handling, the boys should give a good account of them- selves. Potential point-getters and last year's scorers include Bill Murray, Ber- nie Kramer, John Smaldone, Calvin Brown, Don Connis. Douglas Hunter. Ralph Bowley, Linn Howick, and Howard Barber. 52 WD. +.D.l-.-HJANUARY, 1939 CROSS COUNTRY SQUAD l7ront row, left to rightill. lfink, Cf. Mclireen, R. Dailey, XV. Boulester, R. Bowley, W. Sullivan, H. Lloyd Des Roches was consistently the best man on the team. and he led the team in every meet. Warren Boulester and Umberto Caniglia also showed flashes of brilliance. Cross Country is a hard and tedious sport, and those who exhibited enough courage to represent the school deserve just praise. Lloyd Des Roches will he hack next year and, if this year's indications prove true. he will become one of the foremost harriers in the state. Coach Russell should find next year's team well up among the leaders. 53 QQ-Q4?BLUE AND WI-IITE??..--a4d 'v. i,.-t-ff Q. iifmi? ',si-iff ' WRIESTLING SQUAD lironl row, left to right-A. NVrestling. which has always been regarded as a lesser sport in the past. has this year attracted thirty-five candidates. From this squad Coach Capasso has se- lected twenty to carry Hope's colors. The Blue Wave is expected to cause some trouble in wrestling circles and should emerge with one or two class titles at the State Championships at the Brown gym which are held in March. 54 i-JANUARY, 1939- wEl+Y TENNIS TEAM l:l'0I'll row, left to right-XV. lfee, lf. The team was represented by such capable veterans as l.es Nlillman. Eddie Allen, Milt lsserlis. Sanford Fincman and newcomers David Templxin and Guy Lancellotti, 55 -i---BLUE AND WHITE- HOCKEY Under the capable coaching of Mr. Jenkins, new hockey coach. the puck- sters have been improving rapidly. What had been expected to be a poor sea' son may as yet end up with the Blue Wave making the playoffs, although this is doubtful. Already Hope players are receiving recognition for their fine work on the ice. Co-Captains Slater and Lovett, together with Brad Gibbs and Skip Hannon, may possibly win All-State honors. East Providence Mount Pleasant La Salle . .. Central ..,. JUNIOR VARSITY FCJOTBALI Hope's junior edition of the Blue Wave football squad had a fairly success- ful season, losing only two games. The team was represented by some fine young athletes and under the able direction of Ted Lane and Mr. Winans they de- veloped rapidly as the season got under way. Coach Schein is counting heavily on the Junior Varsity for his next year's team. Lozow, Ken Long, Wills, Levin, Ahearn, and Katz are expected to make the grade next year, and they will strive to make the team as good as this year's contingent was. TABLE TENNIS For the first time in the history of Hope High School, a table tennis team was formed. This aggregation, which was usually represented by those three tennis luminaries Les Millman. Eddie Allen. and Milton Isserlis. ran rough- shod over all opposition. Hope's forces emerged champions of state high schools when on December 9, 1938 they defeated Central's team in the finals at the Rhode Island Audito- rium. Thirteen schools were represented in this tournament and Hope lost only one match all evening. An enviable record, indeed, left by an enviable team! GIRLS' CAGEBALL Cageball, the popular sport of the year, replaced field hockey partly be- cause of the lack of a playing Held. Three teams, representing the three classes in the school, practiced under the direction of Miss Agnes Flagherty. The Sen- iors came out on top in the tournament and won the privilege of playing two games with Mount Pleasant. GIRLS' SWIMMING An overflow crowd of girls interested in swimming made necessary the for- mation of three separate practice groups. The classes are under the direction of Miss Agnes McCaffrey and Bud Latham of the Providence Boys' Club is Coach. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Interclass basketball games were played among the seniors, juniors, and sophomores. Miss Plagherty is the coach. 56 CU .fn ff '-l RHOPEI :HW Nrkewfymgz Mx, XCRQH11 K 1cm1v4 , j YNIPLI' ff ymuN64f I 1 UUE f ,UQMPK , E vi. I ' ,: Q Ni, A ii C.-H--ig - Q A , ,.,.
