Shortly afterwards ground breaking ceremonies for Hope's new Physical Education Center took place. The $3.2 million structure is expected to be completed in early 1978. The weekend was highlighted by Hope's 23-8 victory over Alma. During half-time Brian Stauffer and Cindy Bere were crowned Home- coming King and Queen. 23 EventĀ Sophomore Women Take Nykerk Cup The climax of Parentās Weekend came in the form of the Nykerk Cup Competition held November 6. The Sophomore Class captured the cup before a standing-room only crowd at the Holland Civic Center. The program began with the freshman song, ā'S'Wonderful. The class of '80 presented as their play āāThe Thwarting of Baron Bolli- grew. Their orator was Michelle Ricci. The sophomores sang Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where Where Youāre Going To?), with the oration given by Pam Kirby. The Competition ended with the sophomore play, The Little Prince. Evvntt 39 A Year of Mosts A Jimmy Carter during the Presidential race B Tenerife, the Canary Islands C Swine Flu vaccinations at the Holland Civic Center D Mao lying in state Pictures A, B, and D courtesy of Wide World Photo 0 EveniĀ The major news items of the year tended to be a series of mosts: the most consecutive days of sub- freezing weather, the most snow, the most people ever killed in a plane crash. The snow was a story fit for tell- ing grandchildren. The first flakes fell in mid-October and continued intermittently through February. The blizzard of January 27-29 was the big storm. So much snow fell that classes at Hope were canceled on January 28 for the first time in 1 8 years. As if the snow and cold werenāt enough, there was a natu- ral energy crisis at the same time with many factories forced to shut down or drastically reduce their consumption of energy. Ohio was one of the states hardest hit with Michigan feeling very little of it. Winter also brought with it the threat of Swine Flu. A massive ino- culation program was undertaken, but the dangerous side-effects experienced by some of the immun- ized led to the project being scrap- ped. The rise of Jimmy Carter from the obscure Jimmy who? of Plains, Georgia, to the President of the United States dominated the head- lines much of the year. Once in office his new policies, both domes- tic and foreign, brought forth a great deal of controversy. Tenerife, The Canary Islands, was the scene of the worst crash in aviation history on April 4. The col- lision of two 747's on a foggy run- way caused the deaths of more than 575 people. China, in the midst of cleaning up from an earthquake, paused to mourn the death of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung on September 1 4. He had been a leader in the Peopleās Republic of China since 1921. On a lighter note, the Cincinnati Reds won the World Series beating the New York Yankees four games to none. Super Bowl XI was won by the Oakland Raiders with a score of 32-14 over the Minnesota Vikings. the many foreign study pro- grams, Hope College provides the opportunity to live in a foreign soci- ety and to gain new perspectives on America while they study abroad. For those who can not travel abroad themselves, the presence of foreign students from some 23 for- eign countries on Hopeās campus helps to give reality, and some- times urgency, to political issues and human problems of places far away from peaceful little Holland. In 1869 the first student from Japan enrolled at Hope to learn English. Not many years later the first Hope graduates went to the Far East as doctors and missionar- ies, calling themselves the Mes- sengers of Hope. A century later the number of students coming to Hope from abroad is still growing and international study opportuni- ties allow American students enrolled at Hope to spend a year, a semester, or at least a summer in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and most countries of Western Europe. Likewise, no one but a yearbook editor can fully appreci- ate the support and assistance given him by students, faculty and friends. While there are simply too many people to mention here, I feel the following people must be acknowledged, for their efforts have been especially helpful. They are Dr. Paul Fried, Mr. Bob Talsma, our very patient company repre- sentative, Terry Bosch, who guided this āgreen editor through several trying times and kept him on his toes. Bob Watson, Paula Houghton and Peg Johnson. A word to the staff. To varying degrees you are all responsible for this book. Each of you is. Iām sure, fully aware of your own contrib- ution. Some of you worked hard, others did not. But the point to be made here is that all of you did contribute something, and I want you to know that Iām grateful for it. I hope that the student body shares in this feeling. Working for the Milestone is hardly a glamorous or financially rewarding job. Staff members sacrificed many hours of their own time so that this book could be produced. They deserve your thanks, as well as mine.
