Governor Milliken received his degree for his interest, support, and participation in higher educa- tion, for his appreciation and sym- pathetic concern for young people, and for his commitment to excel- lence in education in the context of values, culture, and the totality of life, commented President Gordon Van Wylen. Following the convocation, a special luncheon was held in Dur- fee Cafeteria, with the Governor entertaining questions from those present. 30 the year I cannot tell you how very pleased and how very, very honored I am to be here as your convocation speaker this morning, and to hove been selected to receive an honorory Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Hope College. I know that I need not tell any of you here of the distinguished reputation which this really fine liberal arts college has, obviously not only in the state of Michigan, but throughout the entire country. And it is a particular honor and a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to appear before you today. I always enjoy visiting college campuses, because they are great repositories of learning. Harvard President A. Lawrence Lowell once explained this tradition by saying, Universities are full of knowledge. The freshmen bring a little in, the seniors take none away, so knowledge accumulates. This may perhaps be drollery, but there may be some accuracy in thot statement as well. And I think it's an interesting notion, nevertheless. When I was invited to speak here today, some time ago, I was told that this might be a good opportunity for Hope students to hear directly from the Governor the issues we face today and the opportunities for young people to be involved in the mainstream of national life. That's a rather broad topic. But I think there is something very specific which I can say about it, something that has to do with what you all are doing here at a small, distinguished, privately supported liberal arts college. The issues we face today as a state and a nation are incredi- bly, almost impossibly complex. We all read the newspapers and watch televised news reports and we all know what those issues are. As British member of Parliament Margaret Thatcher said, in a recent speech in Washington before the National Press Club, We are in the midst of a struggle for human dignity and for the human spirit. Never before in the 200-year history of this nation, and probably not in the 1 200- year history of Mrs. Thatcher's nation, have the forces that oppose our mutual constitutional system of freedom under law been stronger. Never before has the challenge from governments who negate human dignity, who oppose a governmental and economic system based upon individual choice been so great. I agree with Mrs. Thatcher when she said, It is not the job of any politican to offer people salvation. But nations and states have to be governed. So what is if exactly that we in government can offer to justify thot authority that is given to us by our constituents? Let me quote statesman Edmund Burke who said in a speech in 1774, Your representative owes you not his industry only, but his judgement. That is os simple and accurate a description of the role of government officials as I hove ever come across. It is our job to provide good judgement as we make the infinite number of small and large decisions necessary to the performance of our constitutional responsibility. If you are seeking a career in government, you may ask Where do I go to get good lodgement? My answer to the students of Hope College is, “You are already there. I believe that a good, generalized liberal arts education is the very best foundation upon which to build a career in government or any career, for that matter. It may seem paradoxical, but as the world becomes more complex. I'm saying that we in fact need more generalists. But that is exactly the case, I think. There is a very great opportunity for young men and women like those in this audience today to become involved in the mainstream of national life. We need your vision, your idealism, your good judgement of what this nation should become in its third century. It's easy, I know, to become cynical about government, especially today. You have seen a President resign in disgrace, and many of his close advisors convicted of crimes. You have seen America persistently wage a tragic and horribly wasteful war. You've seen many institu- tions misused. But as John Gardener wrote in his book, Self Renewal, a mood of wise and weary disenchantment may seen wonderfully re, but it does not account for much of the growth and movement, and vital action m the world. The capacity of our people to believe jrnly and irrepressibly that this is a world worth saving, and that intelligence and energy and good will might save it. Is one of the most ing and bracing of American traits. y former teacher, the late Whitney Griswold who became president of Yale University, wrote an exciting book entitled Liberal Educo- And The Democratic Ideal. I’m going to quote from that book, too, but even before I do, perhaps I have made the author's point just by Ming the title, Liberal Education And The Democratic Ideal. It was out of the liberally educated mind that the democratic ideal was born, it is the responsibility of the liberally educated mind todoy to understand to preserve that ideal. In his book Mr. Griswold wrote, The ideal of the liberal education lies at the very roots of American History. For centuries this type of education has been esteemed throughout esfern civilization os the education of the ideal citizen. But the political and social structure of that civilization had denied access to such an iucation to all but a privileged few The educational rout to ideal citizenship should be open to all who were able to travel it. Such was the educational philosophy of the founders of our country. He also said that there is no country that owes so much of its existence to liberal Jucation as the United States. Certainly we need, and we need very badly our highly specialized professionals to help us combat economic ability, energy dependency, world hunger and the many diseases that continue to plague us. But what would a nation or a world that has vod those problems be, if it had failed to preserve the democratic ideals of Truth and Beauty and the states of mind that these ideals imply: t we are all created equal, that inhumanity, racism, and abuse of our natural world is wrong, that the only way we can all live together, that each one of us has a responsibility to believe in and to work for the common good? Those are Democratic ideals, ideals which arc st grosped by the liberally educated mind. In many totalitarian societies, a liberal education is considered wosteful and is discouraged. It is I coincidental that these societies are drab, even though they may be technologically successful. It is not coincidental that there is a part of human mind that rebels against this drabness to this lack of freedom and of governmental compassion for the individual. It is not coma Hal that these societies find they must erect walls around them: not to keep the rest of us out, but to keep their own citizens in. It must bi- lious to the leaders of these societies, that given the chance, their citizens would choose our culture, not their own. The french writer and educator, August DuCloise, in an article in the Modern Language Journal of January, 1935, provided a definition of what a liberal arts education is all obout. In an article entitled The French conception of education, he wrote, Perhaps the best defini- tion would be to say thot culture is what remains when you have forgotten everything. What is it that remains? Many things. The under- standing, quickened, and deepened, a breadth of outlook catholicity of sympathies, a refinement of feeling, a sense of measure, a modesty of judgement, a critical habit of mind, that habit of taking nothing for granted, of thinking for one's self, that habit which is the very soul of liberty, the habit of sincere, unbiased approach to any problem and of the undaunted pursuit of its ultimate solution in a real scientific spirit. A proper and a balanced conception of the various uses of life of its graces os well as its utilities. Those are some of the things that remain, sments of that full and rounded life for which we endeavor to prepare our students. When, am asked to discuss the important issues that face us today, I like to say that there are many problems of the moment, as there always hove been, os there always will be. But there is only one basic issue: Will this nation continue to produce the kind of men and women who founded it, men and women of vision, of great idealism, and of great judgment? If the answer is yes, and I think the answer is yes, then we will continue to endure. We will continue to prevail in the struggle for human dignity and the human dignity and the human spirit. nor W.l . c. Cavanaugh, long- time professor of music and Direc- tor of the Chapel Choir, passed away on March 15, 1976 in Hol- land Hospital. Known to his students as Prof, Cavanaugh was the senior Hope faculty member, having begun his career at the college in 1940. Dr. Cavanaugh's illustrious career includes his accomplish- ments as founder of the Christmas Vespers service and the compos- ition of Hope College's Alma Mater hymn, both in 1941, originator of the now-annual Chapel Choir tour in 1953, and chairman of the Music Department from 1 950-1 969. It was under his direction that Hope received full membership in the National Association of Schools of Music in 1969. The popular professor's career spans 37 years, from a time when he was one of only two music fac- ulty at Hope, until the present time, when there are 1 2 full-time and 1 3 part-time faculty. College President Gordon Van Wylen expressed the loss felt by the campus community, stating, Professor Cavanaugh had a pro- found impact on the development of our music program, and more significantly, on the lives of thou- sands of students. We are grateful for the gifts which he was given, and for his life of faith and service. He loved the great outdoors . . . When he trudged the woods he carried not a gun or net but binoculars. He was sensitive to the wonder that surrounds us and sought to know and befriend the species that share our life on planet Earth. He was not an unthinking sentimentalist. He had a good mind, well above the average, and all his premises were clearly thought out. He was not disposed of verbalizing his beliefs, perhaps because music was so profoundly the language of his soul . . . During the last months of his terminal illness, friends discov- ered the depths of his spiritual nature. His spirit was contagious. Those who came to bring sympathy departed with a triumphant song in their hearts. — Irwin J. Paula Houghton and Jeff Boes, who helped to organize the book and keep things running smoothly. Steve Zylstra, Randy Putala, and Bob Watson, for taking, develop- ing, and printing the many pictures in the book. Tom Renner, Colleen Cochran, Keith Drew, Lenora Parish, Leah Sunderlin, Ann Rezelmen, and Doug De Boer, for helping out when and where they could, and doing the little things that saved me so much time. Robert Palma and Paul Fried, for their advice in solving problems that I faced. Stevens’ Studios, for their very fine portrait service. My family and friends who gave me the support and encouragement that was very much needed. I would also like to give added thanks to four whose extra effort I could not have done without. Karry Ritter, for sharing his knowledge of layout and design and yearbooks in general, along with his keen sense of humor. Tom Veenendall, my former high school adviser, who showed me how to run a yearbook and whose concern for me greatly helped me. Robert Talsma, Representative for Taylor Publishing Company, whose instruction in the technical aspects of the book greatly aided me, and whose friendship and Christian witness made an impact on my life. Last, but foremost, Jesus Christ, who through His death and resur- rection made it possible for me to experience real meaning, forgive- ness, peace, and joy in my life; Jesus was with me every day, help- ing me to deal with the problems of the yearbook, as well as the other problems of life. May God bless you all. Sincerely, ffconlu I 231 I get up, eat, go to class (some- times), eat, go to class, study, eat, study, and go back to sleep. Maybe I’ll go to an occasional party or some other activity. I go to the same classes day after day, week after week, month after month, seeing the same people over and over again. Sometimes I do real well in something, but the joy only lasts for a little time. Maybe King Solomon was right — All is vanity! Human experience shows this vanity as men seek wisdom, pleas- ure, and wealth, and are never sat- isfied. Neither philosophy, pleas- ure, or a compromise between them brings lasting satisfaction. As we reflect in this bi-centennial year, not only on the life of our country, but also on our own lives, we ask the same questions that man has been asking since the days of Adam and Eve — Does life have any real meaning? And if so, how is it found? About 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ answered the question of how man could find real meaning in life. Christ came so that man might have life, and have it more abundantly. It can be found real easily — whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have ever- lasting life. Real meaning in life — we all want it; we all can. Does your life have real mean- ing? It can — if and only if you give your life over to Jesus. Give this bi-centennial year spe- cial meaning — give your life to Jesus. — Terry Bosch 232 the end
