LANGUAGE The English Department, which has six teachers, has received new emphasis recently because of the realized importance of learning to speak fluently and to read and write correctly as preparation for years ahead at college or at work. The English classes will long be remembered with gratitude for the invaluable knowledge acquired there. The students in this department of Hoover High mend the broken chairs and tables, obtain a knowledge of car' pentry in their minds, and secure a surplus of sawdust in their shoes. Ink-stained hands from the play tickets and football programs are the trials and tribulations of these students, also the chance of poor grades for incorrect letter formations or crooked columns. The wood- workers and members of all these classes learn that good craftsmen must work neatly. 2' -' l QWZM' iniuu fS1'5C..., 'U ? Gary Schleig chock full of ideas SOCIAL SCIENCES Mr. Marion Krabill Mr. Raymond Swope Mr. Sam Leles The general purpose of the area of Social Sciences is to enrich and broaden the student's interest in civic participa- tion in the local, state, and federal gov- ernments. Current events, tests, term papers, and various special reports are all included to give thorough training in principles and techniques on the part of the students. The three competent teachers make this an interesting course for all Hoover Vikings. Seniors anxiously awaiting to learn the Prom plans of the juniors and Mr. Krabill BUSINESS EDUCATION Mrs. Olive Aldridge Hoover's typists, secretaries, and stenographers worked earnestly to ac- quire the valuable knowledge offered to them. The clicking of keys and the clanging of the carriage bell often echoed in their sleep. But their desire was learning how to do it correctly and successfully master the courses. This practice is beneficial to them for a sample of what their future positions will involve. Miss Hazel Kronk and Mr. Dale Helwick The D. E. C. LUCILLE BLACK Safe and courteous driving and a thorough knowledge of Ohio's rules and regulations are the necessary fundamen- tals learned in 'sportszfzafzlike Driving before a student may be eligible to pass the driver's license examination given by the state highway patrol. Learning to parallel park and to handle the car are some of the skills taught to produce safe, courteous drivers. GUIDANCE MR. RICHARD L. ARMSTRONG Catering to the special needs of each individual student of Hoover High is the guidance assignment of Mr. Arm- strong. The predominant aim of guidance is to develop future preparedness and re- liability of the students with the art of getting along and making friends. The school and the community benefit from the valuable service offered by the guid- ance program, but the individual is re- warded the most by gaining useful experience helpful in later life. Tom Dorosky The new and well-equipped labora- tories are a part of the teaching of the sciences. The team displayed a good offensive attack but showed a few vveak points in its pass defense, Net yards: Hoover QUT. Perry 2-02: first downs: Hoover 15. Perry ll. AT XVOOSTIZR 11,1-81 Not a group to be channeled into a groove of conformity. the Vikings displayed their first game iitters in the second game. This was a tough, all-out battle. which was won by the team that fought the harder. Net yards: Hoover 160, XVooster l'8g first downs: Hoover ', Wooster 8. NORTHWEST 120-Ol Hoover High continued its winning way as it easily trounced Northwest 20-0. The Vikings' defense was outstanding and. except for the kickoff and a punt return, the Indians never penetrated the Hoover 25- yard line. This was Dale Stevens' first game since his knee injury over a year ago. Net yards: Hoover 512. Northwest 883 first downs: Hoover I-I. Northwest 5. AT LOUISVILLE f8-123 The North Canton-Louisville game is always a good one and this was no exception. The fact that it was an away game for Hoover and that some key play- ers suffered early injuries seemed to hurt the team irrepairably. lt was a close game, one of the cardiac special variety, as indicated by the fact that an illegal procedure penalty nullified the potentially winning touchdown for Hoover in the last 50 seconds of the game. Net yards: Hoover 195, Louisville 158: first downs: Hoover ll, Louisville 5. ORRVILLE 120-143 The Vikings got back on the win trail again but waited until literally the last second to do it, After Hoover took an early lead in the first half, Orrville came back in the remaining two periods to tie the score. A 15-yard penalty and a fantastic catch by end Tim Llewellyn gave Hoover a first and Len on the 5 with less than a minute remaining. After one try failed. quarterback Paul Paparone pushed over the T. Without the services of seven first-team players. the coaching staff had to rely on the sophomores to come through. Although the Vikings lost. this was truly a credit to these sophomores because they played so well. Net yards: Hoover 279. Lehman 257: first downs: Hoover 12. Lehman ll. AT DOVER 10-227 Fourteen points in the first quarter was too much for the Vikings to overcome. Dover was undefeated when we played them. and it was Dad's Nite for them. These things. plus the fact that the Vikings were still weakened somewhat in that the services of injured players were lacking, were enough to spell defeat at the hands of the Dover Tornadoes. Net yards: Hoover 174. Dover 415: first downs: Hoover 10, Dover 12. jACKSON co-61 A costly fumble in the final stanza averted the possibility of a scoreless tie in the oldest Stark County football rivalry. AT CARROLLTON 132-OJ The Vikings finally played the type of football they were capable of to pave the path to the greatest margin of victory of the season. However, despite this lack of returning regulars, the team posted an excellent 15-3 record during regular season play. This record was accomplished by a team that showed great desire and fine ball handling all year long. They played a slow, possessive game, waiting for the good shot and then taking advantage of it. This, combined with a tight zone defense and a tre- mendous fast break, gave them what it took to compile such a record. This was a fine ball club of which everyone was proud. 5 pf. xx, I 1 44 fl Q QQ 'QQ I Q ails L QQ iff I , il K If Q 6 fe ,Wi n ' 5. a M 51 jf if ' ii L' 1 ' 1 I! 2 a JMR Q 5 f X -'Q VARSITY CAGERS ROW I fleft to rightb: Bob Esmont.
