FOREIVORD Vfe of the Viking staff of 1954-55 are most happy to present this edition of the yearbook. hoping that its contents will prove to he a lasting and accurate record of this, our last year at No Ca Hi. XVe hope that future staffs will gain as much experience and en- joyment as we have had in the past year. Following a new trend hegun last year, the grad- uating class of 1955 has been placed at the end of the annual. Other new features are a senior index and a page of contents. This year a two-color scheme was used in the hook for the first time. XX'e hope that little Vic, our mascot. will be a helpful guide as he leads you back over some of the brighter moments of 1954-1955. These students have worked long and hard to make the 1951-55 Viking one to be remembered for many years to come. This year's staff has had a generous helping of the trials and tribula- tions that have plagued annual staffs for years. They have also experienced the sense of satisfaction that comes at the completion of a job well done. The business staff has done an unusually fine job of selling both annuals and advertising copy this year. They have sacrificed many of their Saturdays to raise the thirty-eight hundred dollars necessary to put an annual to press. Stanley 1 Miriam Ransom. l DEBATE Debate is becoming an increasing popular extra-curricular activity here at North Canton. Few other organizations in the school are capable of giving a student such valuable training for the future. Debate not only develops a persons poise and speaking ability, but enriches his knowledge and enables him to see the two sides of every question. Resolved: That the Federal Government should initiate a policy of free trade among nations friendly to the ljnited States was the question for debate this year. The varsity debaters for 1954-55 were john Norris. Roy Newell, -Iune Harpold. and Sandra Shaw. The team placed first in the tournament held at North Canton in December. and won the third-place trophy in the all-state tournament in March. There was also an excellent freshman team this year which placed first in a tournament held at jackson. ATIO AL FORE SIC LEAGU The National Forensic League is a national organization for speech students. The North Canton chapter of N. F. L. was chartered on january 31. 11146. with 15 members. During the last nine years. the organization has grown steadily, This year. I5 new speechers were added. bringing the present membership to 50. To gain entrance to the N. F. L.. a student must earn at least 20 points in debate work. oratorical declamation. dramatic declamation. humorous declamation. original oratory. or ex- temporaneous speakinv. These points are acquired bv' participating in contests against speakers from other schools or by giving service speeches throughout the school and community. Several of our members have over 550 points. This years N. F. Sandy Shaw SCHOLARSHIP This group of students might appropriately be labeled the brain-trust of No Ca Hi. for they represent the scholarship team which was sent to Akron University last May to compete in the district- state finals. Quite a few came back with district ratings and several placed in the state competition. During April a large number of No Cfa His student body' take examinations in one or tyvo sub- jects. hoping to gain a place on the local team. Only the students with the two highest scores in each subject are accepted. These people. along with those who placed on the team this year. deserve much credit for the fine efforts they have put forth. - ATIO AL HO TOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is an organization composed of students who are noted for their outstanding citizenship. A committee of faculty members chooses the new members to be inducted inf to the society each year. To be considered for membership. a student l'l1U5I maintain a scholastic aver- age of 85 or above. demonstrate qualities of leadership. render service to his school and community. and possess a character of high caliber. The society's major duty is to regulate the monitor system. Twelve new members were admitted into he society this vear in an assembly before the stu- dent body. For the first time in the history of No Ca Hi. parents of the present and incoming members were invited to the ceremony. The guest speaker was Blr. Malone. our own superintendent. Y. H. STUDE T COUNCIL Four years ago an organization of the students. bv the students. and for the students was be- gun at No Ca Hi. Although it is still very young, this organization has grown to become one of the finest in the school. The representatives are chosen by their classmates to present the student body's view on various questions which arise during the year. During the 1954-55 year, the Student Council sponsored excellent student assemblies on Christmas and Veterans' Day. took charge of the election of the Homecoming Queen, bought several concession machines for the school, and sponsored buses to our football and basketball games. Officers were joe Cline, presidentg Roy Newell, vice-presidentg Kathleen Wise, secretaryg and Nancy Lenz, treasurer. MO ITORS No Ca Hi's monitors are chosen by the National Honor Society. The members themselves try to fill as many posts as possible. In order to maintain good discipline in the halls. the N. H. S. tries to select students who are reliable and who hold the respect of their fellow students. There are four regular monitors and one alternate for each period. In keeping with the monitor system which was first put into effect last year. a person passing through the halls must present his pass to each monitor and sign each monitors pad. The library staff consists of twenty-five girls, chosen by Mrs. Hammack, our school librarian. Under her guidance, these girls have become quite efficient at helping the student body and faculty in their quest for knowledge. COMMERCIAL CLUB This organization of forty members consists of those students who are enrolled in business sub- jects. including Shorthand I and Il. Typing I and II, secretarial studied and Bookkeeping I. The club is intended to give the students an overall view of the business world in order that they might perform their own particular jobs in this field with more ease and intelligence. This year the club visited the Hoover Company, W'estern Union, Ohio Bell Telephone Co., and the Farm Bureau Insurance Co. IU IOR RED CROSS Because of the staggered schedule. this group found it very difficult to hold meetings during the year. In spite of this. however, they managed to be as active as usual. They collected almost fifty dollars in the annual Red Cross donation campaign: they made favors for Aultman. Mercy. Timken- MerCy. and Shadyside Hospitalsg they packed sixty boxes to be sent overseas. Hallie Boerngen. Susan Clatterbuck. and Kathy Vfise were our representatives to the monthly meetings of the Canton Red Cross Council. The junior and Senior Home Ec. Club held a tea for the faculty, had a pizza party, saw Annie Get Your Gun at the Players' Guild, and ended the year with a picnic in May. The Freshman-Sophomore group had a roller skating party, xisited Nick Barry at VVCMXV, saw movies taken in Europe by Miss Thompson, a teacher at the grade school. and had a Christmas party. Besides learning the fundamentals of building a good home. these girls haxe spent a great deal of time putting their talents to use for others less fortunate than themselves. For example, the junior and Senior girls baked cookies and presented a musical program for patients at Massillon State Hospital. and made favors for local hospitals at Easter. The Freshmen and Sophomores prepared a Thanksgiving bas- ket for a local needy family, went Christ- mas caroling, and also made Easter favors for local hospitals. That's our description of the play, Commencement, a three-act com- edy presented by the junior class on january l-i. The real hero in this play was the high school itself. The plot contained many of the prob- lems one might expect to encounter during an average year at the typical American high school. Many of the scenes paralleled actual experiences of the high school actors and actresses themselves. The plays romantic interest revolved around Ellen Stone, the high school secretary, and Tom Carver, a young teacher. The problems of Alan, accused of being a thiefg julia. who thought everyone hated her because her father had been a criminal: and Sally, who couldn't seem to get a date, pre- sented additional humor and excitement. Their programs were closely correlated with the following activities in both groups: gym nights, Christmas caroling, dan- cing lessons, a Father-Daughter banquet, a weiner roast, a scavenger hunt, a Christmas exchange, and a dance every other month. About once every month, a guest speaker talked to them on such subjects as nursing, home making, paliamentary procedure, and hair styling. Both groups wrapped cancer bandages for the Red Cross and made favors for local hospitals. Both groups also took part in the annual induction and installation services. Mr. Skuban again piloted the Viking grid machine through its season, doing a fine job of it despite an unusually tough schedule. He also coached the reserve basketball squad. Mr. Hertler, in his second year at No Ca Hi, coached the baseball team capably. He, too, was an assistant football coach and also trained the junior high basketball squad. Mr. Esmont put his many years of experience into teaching the junior high footballers the techniques they will need when they join the varsity. They usually play about twenty' games a year against other junior high schools. These boys set a better than average record for themselves with a total of six wins, four losses. ln consideration of the fact that their schedule included such teams as McKinley, Lincoln, Canton South, and Barber- ton, we think they did very well. This year's team faces the season with seven returning lettermen. The team is expected to show ample hitting power and good fielding ability. Pitching will prob- ably constitute their greatest weakness. W'ith some hard work and vigorous spirit, they should be able to turn in another good season. TRACK This year the track team faces a heavier and more competitive schedule than in previous years. in an attempt to create greater interest in the sport among the student body. North Canton will be host to some important track meets, with such teams as Sandy Valley, Lincoln, Lehman, and Louisville. XXV: have high hopes for a very successful season. Now that we have gained a little more experience, we have become co-pilotsg and if we keep up the good work, it won't be long until we are pilots of the Viking ship. As co-pilots, we have helped steer the Ship of Education into the clear in biology, mathematics, English. and Latin. Many of the members of our crew also went to the rescue in Student Council, debate. scholarship, band, orchestra. glee clubs, athletics, cheerleading, and Hi-Y groups. But let's move on to the major part of the painting-high school. Examine the long. flowing strokes of cooperation and harmony. See the shades and shadows that represent the guidance and aid of our teachers and advisers. These subtle influences play an important part in the portrait of our class. Notice here the strong. bold strokes. They represent superior ath- letic provvess. And these quiet, digni- fied strokes here are scholarship. But the most outstanding fact about our painting is that it appears to be unfinished, Wie have yet to add such achieyements as the Senior Prom. the annual, and graduation to make the picture complete. NEW FIRESH Filled with down-to-earth philosophy and wholesome good humor, the senior play, New Fires, offered refreshing entertainment to North Cantonians on Friday, March 25. The story is about a selfish family which has apparently forgotten the real meaning of life. Stephen, the father, decides to reform his family and. in spite of protests and reluctant cooperation, he finally succeeds in doing so. He orders them to come for a short visit to a farm in Missouri which he has inherited from his Uncle Gideon. After they arrive, he states his policy of No work, no eat. Surprised by this course of action, the family rebels, but slowly and surely Stephen does what he has set out to do. Olive marries the town doctor and Dick takes over the farm as the curtain falls on the last dra- matic efforts of the class of '55.
