Living in a foreign country can definitely be frightening, but the experience is niore than worth it in the end, according to Richard Ev- ans. He spent a year living in Nigeria, Africa and says he'll gladly do it again. l Describing the experience as different , Richard immediately felt the cultlire shock people had told him about. He cl ims the streets were in terrible condition I d there were people everywhere. He said the driving was so bad in Lagos that it seemed ll'ke there was no driving laws. Richard and his family resided ongthe Uni- versity of Lagos campus where his father taught. Richard and his sister attei ded the American International School on t e island of Ikoyi, which was twelve miles awa from the house. At the school, he met kids frolm grades K-10 who were from 35 different ountries. Richard made a lot of good, close friends be- cause of their common bond- theyi were all Y 2 HERE TO STAY. Richard is back after one year in Africa. '- . Student Enjoys Living Overseas workers that were stationed in Lagos came from countries like Poland, Denm Italy, Yugoslavia, Sri Lanka, Germany, A and the United States. Life in Lagos was not an easy one because various reasons. There were frequent pc outages which usually lasted all day 14 . 1 1 Many of them were children of oil Warp . 'I f Shopping for food was also a problem T were only about four or five big shopping ters in the whole city of 4 million people. IN of the shopping, however, was done right the streets at little food stands. The 1 prices were fixed only in the stores, and on street, bargaining was the way things v bought. Richard was scared in the beginn but in the end it became a challenge to see . cheap he could buy things for. Another pi lem was the fact that it took ten times lol to get anything done. That could be very f trating, especially for Richard's father ' F foreigners. The friendships that dieveloped had to deal with the Nigeriansmore than if between all of us is one that I had never exper- rest of the family. 1 ienced before.
