I 1 1 Long Hours Of Practice And Hard Wor i Promises A Musical Future. Her love for music began when she was six years old and hasn't stopped since. With her incredible determina- tion and knowledge of the piano, Jen- nifer Newcomb has won numerous awards. Of course, practice makes perfect and for Jennifer that means four hours on school days and four to six hours on weekends. I've never been sorry that I've gotten involved in mu- sic. It takes a lot of time and work, but so far its been worth it, Jennifer said of her devotion to practicing. Jennifer credits part of her success to her instructor, Dr. Bob Bennett, a teacher at Fresno State University. Her turning point began when she started on a road that led her to many competitions and awards. Her first pi- ano competition was when she was fourteen-she tied for first place. As a sophomore, she entered a contest sponsored by the Women's Sympho- ny League and won first place in the piano division and first place overall. As part of the prize, Jennifer got to perform four youth concerts with the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra. Last fall, she entered her first out- of-town contest in Los Angeles, and made the finals out of enterees from a music teacher's convention in San Francisco. There were between two and six people chosen from Northern California and Jennifer was glad to be Michael Melady Rafael Mendoza Kathy Meredith Vahe Messerlian Cathy Messina Greg Metzger Rea Metzger Sammy Mesa Greg Miles Barry Miller Mia Miniello Steve Mizumoto Cheryl Moore Larry Moorehouse Donald Morgan Amy Moshier Randy Mosqueda I Cariesa Muldrew Elizabeth Mullins Mike Murdock Bill Murphy i f F l . - Co-Stars included among the winners. l Ever since Jennifer was in the eighth grade, she has played at re it- als and any other programs or per or- mances she is able to. Jennifer e- lieves playing in front of an audie ce is very helpful. Performance expler- ience is very important, so I playl in public as much as I can. She hope T to be part of many contests and per r- mances this year. Right now she, is busy being a member of the Fre no Junior Philharmonic Orchestra, he St. Anthony's Orchestra, the Fre ino Wind ensemble, and an alternate or the Fresno Philharmonic Orchest ia. Jennifer not only plays the pia o, she takes clarinet lessons as well. ,he has been playing clarinet since sihe was eleven. So whats the future hold for t is talented musician? Music has been really important to me. I want to keiep on in music as long as I can, becadse even though I've taken piano for Hen years, I still have a lot to learn. Hope- fully, I can have a career in music, 'ut it's too early at this point to kno if that will be possible said Jennifei. If Jennifer continues with the why she has been winning and performing on the piano, there's no doubt a career in music would be very rewarding for her. We would like to wish Jenni er the best of luck. l l l PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Jennifer practices at least 30 hours a week!
