The Year ln This was the year that Fresno got their football stadium. The first game was played Nov. 15, 1980 and naturally the Bulldogs won. Locally the Fresno State Bulldogs had a great year. Nearly, in every sport they came out winners. For California sports, some shined and some died! In Football the Oakland Raid- ers crushed the Philadelphia Eagles in the Superbowl. The Raiders stirred up a lot of controversy with their planned move to Los Angeles. They didn't ask the NFL's pemiission and this brought forth a court battle. Only time will tell if the Raiders become the L.A. Raiders. The L.A. Rams for are they the Anaheim Rams?D struggled at first but made the playoffs with the help of Hoover graduate Rod Perry. 262 National Bank

The Year in ovies Comedy movies were generally the box office hits of the season this year. 9 to 5 was a wacky comedy with three secretaries out to get revenge on their boss. And Stir Crazy was a funny prison movie with Cene Wilder and Richard Pryor. Goldie Hawn scored big with a pair of comedies, Private Benjamin fwhere she was nominated for an Os- carl and It Seems Like Old Times. Caddyshack with Chevy Chase was the hit of the summer, and its background of golfing at a snobb- ish country club was something new. john Belushi and Dan Ackroyd rebounded back with The Blues Brothers after their flop of 1941. Pe- ter Seller's last movie was released this year, a comedy about Dr. Phu Mancho, the aged chinese doctor. Anyone that went to the movies regularly this year had a number of scary mov- 1 ies to pick from. Friday the 13th made you never want to go back to summer camp. Prom Nite scared everyone from their senior prom. VVhile The Children made you afraid of the kids next door. When the Academy Award nominations were announced they werenit really suprising. Raging Bull and The Elephant Man came out on top with 8 nominations, with Ordinary People, Tess, and Fame coming in at a close second with 6 nominations. Comic heroes made it big this year. Robin Williams scored big with the story of that salty old sailor, Popeye. As for super heroes Flash Cordan was there to conquer all evil. And if Flash didn't do the job Superman I and II were there to clean up crime. This year had its flops also. The biggest was a 40 million dollar mis- take starring Kris Kristofferson called Heaven's Gate. Al Pacino's Cruising was a violent, vile exploitation of the gay culture and was protested by various organizations all over the country. Can't Stop The Music unfortunately wasn't stopped and was a 2 hour bore about disco music with The Village People and Valerie Perrine. The Year in Fads and fashions come and go with each year. During the 80-81 school year one style worn by both sexes was Levis'501's worn with VANS' or Nike' tennis shoes. These styles were influenced by New Wave and the California look . Another look was sweats or warm-up suits. Those were very popular being sported in the supermarket to Cyou guessed itj sports. Some looks that were popular in big cities never really caught on in Fresno, such as camouflage. This is the wearing of khaki, camouflage prints and jungle prints. Another look was the preppy style. This did catch on a little here in town. Some ex- amples of this are kilts, oxford shirts and penny loafers. ads and ashions 263
