In the history of the presidency this was the first time a divorced man had attained the job. Soon after the in- auguration he celebrated his 70th birthday, becoming one of the oldest presidents. Time will tell if he keeps his big cam- paign promise of balancing the Federal budget. One of the big stories during the election, was the candi- dacy of john Anderson, running as an independent. On elec- tion day he needed 696 of the popular vote to get federal funds to help finance his campaign. He made this goal pulling out over 796 of the vote. jimmy Carter ran for a second term, defeating, in the Dem- ocratic primary, Senator Ted Kennedy and John Anderson. Most of Carteris campaigning took place from the White House because of the Iranian crisis. I gg. .. K V' I '- 5 iz ' 0 ' . 3 On January 20th, the day of inauguration of President Ron- ald Reagan, the 52 American Hostages in Iran were released. After more than a year in captivity they were finally able to go home. Yellow ribbons became the symbol of hope of release for the hostages. This came from Tony Orlando's song Tie A Yel- low Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree. Even in this dis- tressing situation the public kept hoping and showing pride in the country and they were released.
