Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1973 volume:

The Yearbook Staff of Hoosick Falls Central School celebrates its centennial by bringing you memories of the past year and years gone by in this volume of Vagabond II FORWARD V A century has now passed since the first class graduated from Hoosick Falls High School. In 1873 Emma Gibson, Morgan Percy, Jacob Graves, Hattie Graves, and Welton Percy received their diplomas and entered the outside world with their mem- ories of high school years locked securely in their hearts. Our school has undergone vast changes in a hundred years. New fa- cilities and modern courses are now in the wider ranging curriculum. But the essenq of Hoosick Falls Central School is still a of everyone who walks through its doors. O lnvol!v ment, 4 ?edt fot life, and;qopc«rn for, all those we come in contact with make up the spirit of Hoosick Falls Central School. He has the duty of insuring that matters run smoothly in the high school and the unpleasant task of watchdog for unruly students. Together with these jobs he also presides over assemblies, acts as one of the Student Council advisors, and is the National Honor Society advisor. Mr. Stempek, whom we all remember from our grade school days, is largely out of contact with the high school student population. His duties include working out financial problems, substituting for absent teachers, and, of course, keeping order. We can be assured that each new class entering the high school really knows where it's at with this kind of administration. Board Members: LEFT TO RIGHT: FIRST ROW: H Harrison, D Miner, C. Frazier, A, Smith. SECOND ROW: F McGuire, I. Fisk, D McCart. Absent: D. Sutton. R Moll. 4 Our superintendent of schools, Mr. Philip Leonard, has got to be the busiest man in the school system. In addition to his ap- pearances at board meetings, he must work out a budget for our multi-million dollar school. This year he had the additional prob- lem of dealing with the con- struction of our new addition. Although Mr. Leonard is rarely seen about the school, it's com- forting to know that he is there working for us. 0 HjL JyUrUflLt' 4 yvisrYLtMs UL iruf aJ -tjU. It is a time when his life expands, but his spirit encloses it. He feels strength and understanding in a sense he can't comprehend. There is a bond he forms with mankind in that he sees the blending and contrasting of life's miracles. He feels the elements of conscience, and he responds to comprehension and incomprehension. He experiences awe and frustration. There is suddenly a thankfulness within him that he must express, and a tremendous wish to explore and share the world. His life pitches forth and throws new light on values and goals •that no matter how young or naive are the basis of idealism and goodness that he needs to uplift him. This metamorphosis is as old as mankind itself, yet we stand in awe of such creation of character. Never will this process be altered as long as the universe preserves the soul of man. —Sue Carl mm GRADUATES John Hayden Kathleen Niles Frank Pierce Seniors LEFT TO RIGHT: Leslie Hume, secretary; Debbie Manoogian, vice-president; Gerald Nason, president; Carol Brenenstuhl. treasurer In the fall of 1969, a mass of loud, yet timid freshmen de- scended upon the high school. The Class of '73 had arrived. As the years passed, this class, the largest ever to graduate from H.F.C.S., took an active role in school life. The Class of 1973 is the 100th to pass through the doors of Hoosick Falls High School. In their Junior year, with the help of Miss Hulihan, they sponsored a super-successful paper drive, and presented Im- agine '73 , the Junior Prom. The hard work continued in 1972-1973 as the Seniors kicked off the year with a $4000 maga- zine drive. With Mrs. V. as an advisor, the Seniors went on to sponsor the traditional Winter Ball and planned for their senior trip in May. The Senior Activity Group, working with Mr. East- wick, sponsored a picnic and raised money for its various activities. The Class of '73 has indeed shown good school cit- izenship. 8 Mrs. VonHaggin, advisor Elizabeth Baldwin Betty Susan Banks SueBanks Nancy Betit Nan Centuries pass, but smiles remain the same, Edward Bornt Sid 9 Robin Bisson Robeen Susan Brandalik Sue Veronica Bisson Vickie Carol Brenenstuhl Carol Lynn Brandalik Lynn Paige Brenenstuhl Paige always as warm as the last; 10 Jonathan Burns Jon 14 Leslie Hume L« It's hockey in the halls as Charlie and Clay vie for the Early Morning Championship Peter Church Put Rosemary Coon Coony David Danforth Danfirt Elizabeth Davendonis Betsy Edward Cottrell 'Snapper Rita Domine Riter Mr. Eastwick's Right? has prompted a giggle out of Sue Dooley. §ue Dooley Sue- 12 tears are shed always as clear as the ones before; Robert Downing Buck John Eberle Guy Andra Fairbanks Ann Derrick Fowler Derrick Stephen Frank ’ Chuck Linda Gilchrest Linda Pamela Grobuiki Pam 13 Susan Carl Sue Sherry Casavant “Sher David Casey “Casey St. watches Carol watch a play rehearsal. activi- ties such as preventing student disputes in the halls and join- ing in the spring basketball game. Many faculty members enjoy new facilities and all enjoy the space provided by the new ad- ditions. Our science department has been greatly improved with new lab rooms and equipment allowing more work for students on lab projects. Our traditional Christmas initiation with the Senior Chorus welcomed our new teachers Mrs. Goldstein and Mr. Gronning. If the faculty and students continue their close relation- ship and sharing of ideas as they have this year and in the past, we will all certainly benefit. This season was highlighted by the league's final game when the Hoosiers faced St. Peters of Saratoga. Both teams boasted a 6-0 record. This set the scene for a pagentry of mixed emotions, drama, and all out play that magneted over 2,000 spectators. They cried for the elimination of a team that hadn't pre- viosly been scored upon. At the close of the tight 8-6 game, emotions were mixed. For the winners, overwhelming joy, cheering celebrations, and motorcades throughout downtown Hoosick Falls. For the losers tears, frustration, regret, and a long ride home. From the crowd only one word could be heard, pealing as if from some giant bell, 1. H.F.C.S. OPP 16 Queensbury 8 28 Mt. Football Cheerleading The cheerleaders of H.F.C.S. cheer- ed their football players on to a vic- torious season, which made them No. 1 in the league. No matter what the weather was, the cheerleaders were always there, leading the spectators in cheers and creating the enthusi- asm needed to win the game. Chaos reigns after the St. Peter's victory. Debbie and Michele muster up their Hoosier Power 65 Cross Country The Hoosier Harriers brought about a major coup this year as they upset the perennial league champs, Schuylerville. The Hoosiers finished their season in a tie for the league crown. On completion of their regular season slate, the Panthers grabbed second place in the section II run in Schenectady. For much of the early going, our boys were on top of the opposition. Then, in mid-season, the London flu struck, and caused some of our starters to miss key contests. The result was a losing streak that killed our chances for the league crown. But, the guys got it all together near the end and turned a disasterous season into a winning one. Things are looking up, we all expect the league title next year. r M n (LEFT TO RIGHT): M Folgert, C. Kaukas. K Buck. CM'11 H Wngh.R Hall SECOND ROW: B Hall. B Harrison. S. Steller. Under Coach Greenburger's guidance, the guys piled up the victo- ries to end the year with a winning slate. The boys not only sharpened their basic skills, but became familiar with the various offenses and defenses they will use on varsity. It could only have been those Hoosier Panthers spurring their team on to victory. With Coach Baker at the helm, the grapplers boasted a near perfect season, remain- ing undefeated in league competition and dropping only one non-league bout. The team captured first place in the prestigious Shenendehowa Invitational tourney, and went on to win top honors in both the Washing- ton County League and the Section II class C tournaments. Consisting almost exclusively of freshmen and sophomores, our JV Grapplers defeated several larger schools. They won decisively in both matches with the Berlin Varsity, and placed high in the South Glens Falls Christmas tournament. Of course, our Junior Panthers swept the Washing- ton County League JV tourney, and walked off with eight of a possible twelve first places. The determination, spirit, and performance of this squad ensure that our wrestling program will keep our school No. 1 for years to come. By May 19, the class of '73 was ready to present Imagine '73 , a glorious combination of clouds and sky and a splendid wash of color for a rainbow archway. These lent themselves to one of the brightest and loveliest junior proms. This could have only been achieved by the enthusiasm of the class of '73 and the sin- cere help of Mrs. Frazier and Miss Hu’ihan. The erection of the rainbow made Imagine '73 a reality. The highlight of the evening was when Carol Pine yielded her crown to Kay Marsh. After the crowning of Kay Marsh as queen, she and her escort, Howie Wright, led the Grand March. Mike Stansfield and Sue Carl happily wound their way through the archway of arms. 106 FT A This year Future Teachers started off on a bright note with a tea welcoming all the teachers back. Jack would have graduated with us, and his absence from our ranks leaves us with a great sense of loss. Far from being forgotten, Jack's active sports life stands as a tribute to him. Also, the new scoreboard, erected in his honor, ensures that he will be remembered at every sports contest for years to come. Jack was a varsity football player, and took part in varsity wrestling and baseball also. It is with great pride that we leave this yearbook as a memorial to Jack Hayden. • • • rr' - ® --% . tV- • m V .
