Foreword The Class of 1960 presents this Vagabond as a partial history of our four years in High School. It cannot be a complete account because many im- portant events go unnoticed as they occur and can- not be recorded; others are best forgotten. The glimmer of an idea that sent us searching in the library or puttering in the lab seemed of little im - portance but it may have been a factor that helped to change our lives. Mischievous pranks that got us into trouble, assignments incomplete or undone, and poor recitations are best left unrecorded. We trust we have presented events, pictures, and names that belong to fond memories. Page 1 Dedication We, the class of 1960, dedicate this year book to Mr. Douglas Eighmey, Director of Physical Education. He began his career here in 1930 as gym teacher and coach of all sports. He became well known in this area for his fine sportsmanship and for his success as a coach. His basketball teams won eight league championships. We admire him for his kindness to us, his gentlemanly manner, his dedication to his job and his success in it, and for his loyalty to our school. We dedicate this book to him as an attempt to show our appreciation for what he has done for our school, for our community and for all athletics. Page 2 faculty e To the Class of 1960: Congratulations! The completion of your high school education marks the completion of a foundation for learning. Learning is a never ending process. The twelve or thirteen years of schooling you have had thus far have provided you with the tools, the basics for continued learning. A little learning is a dangerous thing. Only by continued striving and seeking . . . only by fully utilizing your present talents, can you gain full measure of satisfaction: the confident knowledge that you have done the very best you are able. With heartiest best wishes. Page 4 Board of Education Left to Right: Dewey McCart, Fred McGuire, Earl Goodermote, Clyde Baker, John Davison, Arthur Smith, Charles Frazier, Harry Harrison, Ralph Moll. In the splendid dining room, designed by the A. Whittet and W. White Com- pany, a delicious meal was served. The chef to whom credit is due for this mouth- watering feast is Monsieur Roger Corbett. After the dinner, in an introductory speech by New York State Senator Edward Loomis, the merits of the presidential candidate, Mr. Paul Bachorz, were set forth. After thanking the Senator, Mr. Bachorz introduced the candidate for the vice-presi- dency, Mr. T. Van Surdam Miles. Opposing these candidates were Mr. D. A. Armstrong and Mr. Gene Roberson. A toast to the forthcoming election was given by Mr. John Cooney. Speeches by other political hopefuls, Edward Brandi, Donald Hillman and Anthony McShane, were followed by entertainment. The famous H. B, Cole Jr. Band, with Miss Patricia Griswold as vocalist, play- ed the popular song “Party Girl written by Marshall and Marshall. The singing trio of Lapan, Niles, and Piritz also rendered a selection. The well-known pianist, Marilyn Hill, accompanied Maureen Unavitch in a melody com- posed by Reilly and Sheffer. The remarkable dancer, Judy Jepson, charmed all of us. The dancing team of Jordon and Mayer also rendered one of their numbers. PROPHECY After the musical portion of the program, the world famous comedian Morris Wheeler, appeared. J. Kasavitcha, R. Howard and D. Sweet performed their imitation of the Three Stooges. James Brown did a pantomine and Pauline Arasim interested all of us by reading an excerpt from her latest novel How to Win Friends and Keep Them”. When this entertaining program came to an end, I was able to mix socially with others at the banquet. Seated next to me was Miss Janet Thompson, star of stage and screen. Her es- cort was her producer, Ronald Liporace. Miss Thompson stars in her latest success with beautiful Anne Marie Hayes and talented LeRoy Gardner. Another guest was Joan Thompson, author of the best-selling novel, Wheaties for Breakfast . In a beautiful gown designed by Barbara Pytko of New York, was F. J. Bugbee, the well-known columnist. John Green, the press photographer for the presidential candidate, Mr. Bachorz, and Richard Stallmer, publicity manager, were also present at the dinner. Richard Danforth, Thomas McGuire and Richard Hawks, successful financiers, were present to support their candidate General John McMahon and Mayor Robert Strait were also present as special guests. On the planning committee were socialites Miss Audrey Moon and Miss Pamela Niegoda. Miss Jane Tilley and Miss Joanne Palmateer, well-known in social circles, also lent their presence to this glamorous affair. Miss S. Brock, B. McCart, L. Milliman, D. White and L. Pandell, this season's debutantes, appeared at this dinner, also. All these famous guests added to the splendor of this annual campaign dinner, making it the highlight of this year's social calendar, at Washington and of interest to politicians and socialites all over the country. Bradford Cole, Head of the Music Department had had its usual busy schedule of events this year. After an unusually busy summer schedule the group lurched right into the Fall program playing all the home football games, adding greatly to the enjoyment of these events. The annual Christmas pro- gram including the high school assembly and the public concert kept the band busy after the football season. Following the Christmas recess the band delved into working on music for the Spring concert in April and State Contest in May. After these two events were taken care of the band busied itself prepar- ing for the usual array of parades in May. The band was well represented in the Sectional All-State music festival in November at Averill Park and the annual County Music Festival in April at East Greenbush. Our director Mr. Cole had the unusual honor of conducting the sectional All-State Junior High Band at Hudson, N. Y. in November. Page 46 Chorus First Row. Left to Righc P. Arasim, L. Milliman, S. The Christmas recital and Spring Concert are the annual events for which this group prepares. We also hope to attend the Tri -State Music Festival in June. Page 47 Junior Band The Hoosick Falls Central School Junior Band consisting of 50 students in grades 5-8, directed by H. Bradford Cole, Music Department head is the finest Junior Band we have ever had. Emerging from the State Contest last Spring with an A. rating, the Junior Band had a busy summer schedule. Starting in the Fall with three rehearsals weekly, the group prepared itself for the annual community Halloween Parade which ultimately was rained out. Next, the Christmas Program which the Junior Band played its part very nobly along with the Christmas Assembly. In February the Band did an outstanding program of music at the Hoosick Grange, an annual affair done by one of the school's music groups. With this program out of the way, the group prepared itself for the Spring Concert in April and the State Contest in May. With the usual number of parades scheduled for May the Junior Band next prepared for these. All in all the band has had a very busy and successful year. Eleven 5th. and 6th. graders represented our Junior Band in the A11-County Elementary Band at East Greenbush in April. Page 48 sports Football Front Row, Left to Right C. Mayer, A. Armstrong, D. FOOTBALL - 1959 This year was our first year of eleven-man football. It was also our first football season under our new head football coach. Coach Kenyon. The men on the team had high spirits and were in the best of physical condition but lacked the experience of eleven man ball. They lost all the games except the game with St. Peter's in which both teams tied 0-0. (The game was played under adverse weather conditions.) The men who will be returning next year feel that they gained enough valuable experience to make next year's team a strong contender for the championship. From our last years' team we lost only one infielder and one outfielder, so this spring we will be loaded with returning lettermen plus many freshman and other underclassmen who will be out for the first time. This spring we look toward a fine baseball season to round out the 1959-1960 schedule of sports at Hoosick Falls High School. Page 51 Varsity G. Johnson, F. Whittet, D. Bornt, E. Decker, G.
