COLE DEDICATION We, the Class of 1957, respectfully dedicate this yearbook to Miss Dora Boyce and Mr. Brad- ford Cole. In the years ahead we feel sine that the recollection of these two teachers will always be woven into the pattern of our memories. As Mr. Cole personifies the musical note that we have chosen as our theme. Miss Boyce, represents and has taught us the basic science on which not only our melodies but our workday pursuits are founded. 3 Front Row - Left to Right - Gail White, Joan Kovage, lames Pratt, Sandy Benson, Marcia Brown, Judy Hyde. THE EDITORS I X X drninistrdtion and _iy PRINCIPALS MESSAGE To The Class of 1957: You are completing your high school education un- der a system of government which is based on the rights and dignity of each person as an individual. During your last year in school this has been in sharp contrast with conditions elsewhere in the world, and we hope that you will have a clearer appreciation of democracy as the best way of life so far devised. The price of our freedom has not been cheap and to keep it will cost much in effort, interest and personal ded- ication. You must not fail. Sincerely, A. Herbert Campbell 6 BOARD OF EDUCATION Seated: Dewey McCart, Earl Goodermote, J. Joseph Hayden, Arthur Smith, Mrs. Arthur Baldwin. It was our class. We were assigned to room 27 and our advisor was Mrs. Potts. At our first meeting we elected the following officers: President ................. Paul Gahn Vice-President Robert DuRoss Secretary Richard Davis Treasurer .... Sally Andrew Student Council members were, James Miner, Sandra Benson, Gayle Smith and Barbara Carr. Our activities for the year included a hayride and the traditional fresh- man magazine drive. At the end of the year we had S24.25 in our treasury and as the picture in the Yearbook cost $25, Mrs. Potts lent us 75 cents. Our Sophomore year advisors were Miss Law and Mr. Peckham and our homerooms were 21 and 11. Our officers were: President______________ Judy Hyde Vice-President .. Shirley Granger Secretary Pat Smith Treasurer Sandra Benson Student Council members this year were Marcia Brown, Sandy Benson, Joe Spiak and Jane Rudd. We voted to pay SI dues to put some money in our treasury and we had a food sale at Cuddihys, as we had to purchase roses for the seniors for Honor Society this year. We had two dances this year, one the Sadie Hawkins Dance for which we used records and the other a square dance with the Petersburg Dance Band supplying the music. Our first Junior Class meeting was held in room 21, which again was one of our homerooms. The other room wa3 29, with Miss Hulihan and Mr. Peckham as class advisors. We elected the following people as officers: HISTORY President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer William Haynes Gail White Judy Hyde lane Rudd Bob Knapp was elected President at the beginning ol the year, but his family moved away shortly afterward so we elected Bill Haynes President and Gail White Vice-Pres. Student Council members this year were Sally Andrew, Jane Rudd, Judy Hyde and Marcia Brown. We held a food sale at Cuddihys and also invited Bess Wurm and her orchestra to play for our Harvest Dance. We elected a committee of representatives for our class rings and committees were appointed for the Junior Prom. The name of our Prom was Stairway to Paradise and we had Phil Foote and his orchestra from Albany supplying the music. We also conducted a paper drive and made approximately S60. Our Senior year our advisors were Mrs. Coburn and Mr. Eighmey, and as we were a small class of 33 we were all in one homeroom 15. Our class officers this year are: Student Council members this year are, Jim Pratt, Marcia Brown, Ed Smith, Judy Hyde, and Maurice Andrew who is President. At our first meeting we agreed to conduct a magazine sales campaign. We realized a profit of approximately S203. The Vagabond Staff was selected and at present is busy at work. The class is also busy preparing for a Senior Play. The Winter Ball was held December 29 with the music of Osmond Eldredge. Gail White leaves Mrs. Kelly with no one to bother her all the time. CLASS One evening in 1987 I sat in my apartment exhausted from a rugged day's work at my desk as private secretary to the president of the General Electric, James Pratt. My head was spinning from the big business of the day but I thought perhaps a light and frivolous television program might relax me. I pressed the chairside button of my supersonic set and heard the peppy rhythms of a trio from the local chapter of Today's Farmers singing the song which is sweeping the grass-roots circuit, Subsidies and Surpluses. The trio was composed of Maurice Andrew Nick Flynn and Kenny Knapp. The program was interrupted by the ringing of the doorbell. It was Gail White, Jane Rudd and Fluff Stevens. They explained that they had just come from the annual convention of the Business and Professional Women. Marcia Brown, the president, was doing a fine job of presiding over the convention. After exchange of greetings they told me they had been delegated to bring the news that I had just been named Secretary of the Year. When I had recovered from the shock I got them some coke and we settled down to watch the program again. Just as we settled back, on came the commercial. Commercial did I say? It was none other than Butch Von Hagqin and Don Lohnes, Butch in his Game Warden uniform and Don wearing that of a State Trooper. They had a spot announcement asking for cooperation in observing speed and game laws during the coming Russian Elk season. The next number turned out to be a quartet ot nurses from The Hoosick Falls Memorial Health Center, Gail Ingram, Pat Smith, Sally Andrew and Helen Hewitt singing Needles and Pins. Between numbers I had a chance to tell the girls that I had seen Billy Haynes recently. He is a public accountant and was in the office to direct an audit of our accounts. While we were chattinq another commercial came on. We watched intently as we were expecting anvthina now. It advertised Melton Drip refriqerators and featured Dub Miner as a refrigerator tech- nician who chilled us with his description of the Melton's thawing powers. I wondered what Irving Moon, one of our engineers who had come up through the apprentice course, would think of this product. Irving, of course, can talk nothing but General Electric. 28 PROPHECY The next number, a lively rock-n-roll tune called Nuts and Bolts , reminded us that Ed Smith, Walt Earley, and Humphrey Dorr were all successful engineers who had collaborated on a new one- story skyscraper - horizontal - that was shocking New Yorkers. The blue prints had been prepared by our old school mate, Walt Sachau. The next commercial presented a dignified woman in a smart, tailored suit who, to our amazement, turned out to be Gayle Smith, Principal of Hoosick Falls Central School, making an appeal for candidates in her profession. She told of the fine new building which they had just moved into and presented two members of the teaching staff, Nancy Evans and Joan Kovage, Physical Educa- tion teachers, who presented their puplis in a trampoline demonstration. A lively musical number was next - a march The Army Engineers. We wondered whether Bob DuRoss or Charlie Lohnes had inspired this as they were both in there drilling. After this number, a cart of gleaming trophies was wheeled out on the stage followed by two striking looking women whom we recognized as Sandy Benson and Marjorie Decker. They received the Betty Crocker Award for their recipes submitted in the annual contest. Sandy is married and the mother of seven and Marjorie, also married, was announced as Homemaker and Secretary. The awards were presented by Joyce Dougherty, now Dean of Women at Syracuse University, who was accompanied by her private secretary, Joan Hawks. As the empty trophy cart was wheeled off the stage we recognized Charlie Noyes. He must be working as a stage hand in the TV Studio. When Charlie had disappeared silently behind the curtain a brisk girl in an Air Force Uniform came out bearing a poster urging girls to join up. It was none other than Betty Green. Who else could we see? This had to be cut tains! Our class had realized their ambition. 1957 had made history-or at least entertainment. sf tm NAME FAm EE SAYING Maurice Andrew Sally Andrew Sandra Benson Marcia Brown Marjorie Decker Charles Dorr Joyce Dougherty It's always better to have two irons in the fire.
