HOOSAC SCHOOL 6eus R€Qlt HOOSICK, NEW YORK James P. Beckford, Headmaster Alfred I. Murray, Assistant Headmaster DEDICATION The 1981 Owl is dedicated to Mr. James P. Beckford and Mr. Alfred I. Murray, both of whom are leaving Hoosac this year. Mr. Beckford has been at the helm of the Hoosac community for five years as Headmaster, and through his efforts has managed to keep the ship afloat through sometimes perilous waters. During the years 1976 -1981 he chose to deal with all - students, faculty and staff - as human beings and not as mere cogs in the School machinery. His positive attitude, flexible approach to leadership, as well as his humour were appreciated by all. Mr. Alfred I. Murray, Hoosac’s beloved assistant headmaster for four years, has tirelssly given his time and understanding to everyone. Students and parents especially, appreciated his extraordinary willingness to lend a helping hand, whether in an emergency or for foutine needs. His cheerfulness, ready wit and unassuming manner have won our hearts. i 2 To the Class of 1981, As you look through this yearbook in years to come, I hope you remember your time at Hoosac with fondness. This small community has tried to give each and everyone of you not only a quality edu- cation but also a personal one. What you have learned about your- selves, your strengths and your weaknesses, should make you better and happier adults. As I complete my fifth and final year as Headmaster I look back on years of enjoyment knowing all of you and, hopefully, helping you mature. I extend to you my personal congratulations for a job well done and wish you all well in the years to come. As an educator, I rarely see how our products turn out—we are stuck in time. New faces, new names march past us year after year. We can only hope that the effort we expend on your behalf will bear fruit for you later on. I have faith you, the Class of 1981, will prosper. 3 6 m i Vestry Varsity soccer Varsity Baseball Tuck Shop Hockey Michael Lightbourne IV, v, VI iv, v Time, flowing like a river Time, beckoning me Who knows when we shall meet again. After starting the season with two consecutive losses to Argyle, the Owl hooters reeled off a string of 8 straight victories. A loss to Cambridge broke the string, but it proved to be the final loss of the season. The Owls went into the play- offs with a regular season record of 13-3-1, and met Doane Stuart, a school Hoosac had easily defeated twice during the season. The Owls faced a fired-up Stuart team, however, and struggled to 4-1 win. The Taconic Conference finals saw a match-up of Hoosac and Darrow. In one of the most exciting games ever played in the conference, the two teams forced a penalty kick shoot-out after a 1-1 tie after regula- tion. Goalkeeper Masanori Ono stopped two Darrow kicks to give the Owls a 5-4 victory and the Taconic Conference championship. Back row: Brian Dooley, Mike Rider. Mass. in the championship game of the Tacomc Conference Saturday at Pittsfield. The Owls had beaten Doane Stuart in regular season twice this year by 4-0 and 7-0 margins, but a gusting head wind and a fired-up Stuart club put the Hoosac offense in check for most of the first half as they fell behind 2-1 Hoosac tied the game at 2-2 with 11 minutes left in the half when Behrooz Vahidi punched in a rebound off the hand of a Stuart fullback •They brought back some of their starters and that made them a stronger team then what we saw earlier this year. Hoosac coach Mike Bartosik said. But we had a letdown besides When you have beaten a team 7-0. you’re not as sharp as you could be. Bartosik. who takes his squad Ealreda II.... HOCKEY 37 After a decade of nonexistence, basketball once again became a major sport at the Hoosac School. The 1980-81 version of the Hoosac team, overcoming many handicaps, managed to win two games while losing six. With three starters returning, coaches Scott Danisch and Mike Bartosik are very optimistic about next year. The improvement of all the players, as indicated in Spring scrimmages, is encouraging. With Masanori Ono handling most of the pitching chores, Doug Murray behind the plate, and the only all oriental infield in New York State Independent School ranks (Kawai, Morimoto, Ku Kim), team defense was outstanding. Brian Dooley, Gerardo Espinoza, Dave Evans and Mike Rider patrolled the outfield and contributed key hits to the Hoosac attack. The Owls had high hopes entering post-season play, but lost to a very talented Darrow squad in the semi-finals of the Taconic League Playoffs.
