We, the Yearbook Staff, would like to thank you all for riding and hope your year on our train brings you special experiences, memories, and friendships. Our train is run by our administrators — the Engineers. The conductors are the faculty who teach the passengers how to keep on track to enter our next train in life. The passengers are the students of Hoopeston — East Lynn High School. There are special passengers, the Foreign Exchange Students, from other countries. Then the Juniors who have one last train to ride and the Sophomores who have two more trains to ride. Finally, the Seniors who are on their last train ride of high school. The train starts slowly as new passengers come aboard. As all the passengers become acquainted new friendships are created and old ones are renewed. The train continued to gain speed. There are many bumps and turns in the tracks which represent coping with problems and meeting new people. The train runs full speed ahead as the year flies by. Then we realize that this train is about to come to a halt. The Seniors may be both sad and glad to finally depart the 1988 Cornjerker Express. They will remember all the knowledge they have gained to help them find their new train into the future, for there are many goals to be accomplished and new friendships to be created. And maybe on some far away train, the doors may open to old friends from the 1988 Cornjerker Express. We hope you all enjoy the message that our train theme brings. For life is just many continuing trains which we all must ride. YEARBOOK: Row 1 0 to r) — Renee Wilson; Terri Hari; Angie Tyler; Marie Parsons Row 2 (I to r) — Brian Stumph; Jason Wilbur; Brad Cress; Bill Bledsoe Not Pictured — Nancy Probasco B eing a member of the Picayune staff was no easy job Long hours and compli- cated planning were involved The staff met almost every Monday night during the school year to organize this year’s book — The Cornjerker Express. Being on the staff also meant putting the group’s interest ahead of personal interests Our editor Ter- ri Hari definitely did this Terri has worked very hard to bring you the best possible yearbook. 1988 brought many changes to the staff With the addition of Rankin and Wellington students, the new members of the staff brought innovative ideas with them to join with the ideas of our Hoopeston — East Lynn students. We hope you like the ways we combined everyone’s thoughts. Our staff had a very good year selling advertisements Brian Stumph and Angie Tyler were the top salespersons; however, everyone on the staff helped and we sold over 125 ads to various businesses. We also sold over two hundred books this year, a record number for the past few years We made a sincere effort to get a picture of everyone who purchased a book (no easy job to accomplish!) in it We hope we captured” on these pages the real you!! We would like to acknowledge and thank several individuals who helped us prepare the book. Thank you Mr. Christine, Nicki, and other Camera Club members for all the long hours you spent taking and developing pictures. Thank you Libby Witty and Roa Christine for coming out during the summer and helping with final layouts. Your help was greatly appreciated, especially since you two were not even members this year. And. thank you students and faculty for being the focus of our memories. It’s been a good year and thanks for the memories . ..! The Picayune Staff Laying down on the job, Terri? (She really never did!) s V enior Adon Vela volunteered to do the art work for the 1988 Year book. He designed the endsheets, the small trains on the bottom of each page, and the divider pages. Adon was also active in the Art Club and was a member of the football and track teams. He plans to attend Olivet Nazarene College and will play football We wish him the best of luck and sincerely appreciate all his hard work and suggestions. Thanks, Adon! — The Staff ___« PEOPLE ON BOARD ' M L TRAIN PERSONNEL On the Cornjerker Express the Engineer controls the train (school) and the Conductor controls the crew (teachers) and passengers (students). Volker Vollradt was one of our foreign exchange riders Coming from a town of about 60,000, he liked Hoopeston because it was smaller. Volker attended a similar type high school in West Germany; however, he got out of school everyday at 1:00. In West Germany high schools are thirteen year institutions so when he goes back to his country, he will have two years of high school left, and then he will have to serve eighteen months in the military. Volker decided to become a foreign exchange student to learn a new language, to get to know another country, to meet new friends, to get out of the daily life in his hometown, to see something else, and to have fun! His most embarrassing moment in this country happened the day of the Foreign Exchange Christmas party A girl, who was from Bolivia, was attending school with him They were busy talking with each other and they walked into the boy’s locker room together. He said, “I noticed where we were when a guy behind me said ‘Wow! I like that!!!’ Luckily, everybody was already dressed.” Volker said he’d miss a lot of things about Hoopeston and America. He stated, “I’ll never forget the ballgames with the band, the cheerleaders, the national anthem, the sports (especially basketball games), and the junk food. Yes, you really can get used to ham- burgers.” Volker’s home address is: Frankfurter Str. 12, D-4750 Unna, West Germany. Valeria Sottili is from Torino (Turin), Italy. She is the middle sister in a family of three girls. Her parents are educators with her father being a professor and her mother a teacher of German. Valeria went to a five year high school in Italy called “Scientific High School,” where she was prepared for college. One difference there was that if students failed a class, they would have to take an examination in that subject in September and if students failed the examination, they would have to take the entire year over again She decided to become a foreign exchange student because “it is a way to get a lot of experience. I love to travel and meet new people She feels that different countries will never forget the prejudices about each other as long as their people don’t know each other She feels Americans are less formal than Italians. She says, “There is more a feeling of ‘everybody is my friend,’ even with strangers.” Valeria’s home address is: Corso Casale 291, 10132 Torino, Italy. NEXT YEAR’S FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS WITH Volker AND Valeria: Row 1 (I to r) — Denise Trimmell; LeAnn Davis; Steve Highfill; Volker Vollradt; Valer- ia Sottili; Andy Sinn. Mikko Kajaani is an exchange student from Finland His home city Helsinki, the capital of Finland, has a population of about one million people He feels the culture of the U.S. is not much different than Finnish culture because the American lifestyle — movies, television, and music — has such a great influence on his country. Mikko came to Hoopeston East Lynn High School in March and spent the final nine weeks here, however, he actually came to this area in the fall and attended Rossville Alvin. The most interesting thing that he did while there was play football He said. “I had seen football games before, but I didn’t know too much about the rules, etc Well, at least I learned the rules and learned to love football. There are some football clubs in Finland so . . Mikko said he’d also take many memories back with him He reported, “American people are more open and outgoing than Finns. . I’m going to take a lot of memories, a couple of footballs, and some Illini stuff. Mikko’• address is: Gyldenintie 9,00200, Helsinki, Finland Roaemarie Rebecca Rodriquez Senido, or Beck-Beck for short, is from the Philippines. She comes from a family who owns three machine shops and two farms where they raise various fish. Beck is the youngest of six children. She has already graduated from high school. At her school they were required to wear uniforms. She had to say a prayer before and after every class and she had to stand when answering a teacher. School ran from June through March and classes began at 7:30 and ended at 4:00. Beck wanted to become a foreign exchange student because she wanted to learn the culture of a different country, make many friends, and see if I could be independent . without my family. I survived being away from my family and friends because of all my host families. Beck will return to the Philippines with many memories. Some of these are first seeing snow, going riding on a snowmobile, and the Rotary International Christmas Party in Hoopeston with all the other area exchange students. One of her funniest and craziest memories is when she and some of her friends from Danville “toilet papered a bunch of houses Beck’s address is: P.0 Box 323, Bacolod City. Philippines “If that gang of mine could only see me now . . .! My life has changed in every way from diet to transportation. Rice and fish are the mainstays of the Japanese. However, it is not uncommon to find the “Golden Arches perched on street corners throughout the met ropoiitan areas. I have muscles where I didn’t know they existed — leg muscles that is. I ride a bicycle about thirty minutes a day to and from school Bicycling, along with Judo, keeps me in pretty good physical condition. Eric Shore, a junior, left on August 22, 1987 for Komaki City which is located close to Nagoya, the third largest industrial city in Japan The high school of 1500 students he attended has basically the same curriculum as H EL’s; however, the sports (or clubs) run the entire year and students usually participate in only one. Eric’s parents joined him in Japan, where they were met by last year’s exchange student Tomoko Yotsumoto Through Eric’s host families, he has been given the opportunity to observe first hand accounting, construction, and real estate tech- niques. He has also seen how a large chicken processing plant operates and how a kimono factory markets their products. Eric says, “This (foreign exchange program) has been a chance of a lifetime. I am interested in pursuing a career in international business. What better way to learn than hands on training? i JUNIOR PASSENGERS 1 rjrjrjrM Junior Class members decorate Honeywell Gym for Prom. MOVING ALONG • • • w inning three of four meets, the Girls Cross Country team of 1987 had a rewarding season. Although there was no team standing for girls in the Conference, there were individual standings. Aly Jo Haggerty was All- Conference champion for the second year in a row. Madonna Johnson received All- Conference status and Stacy McQuigg re- ceived All-Conference honorable mention. The team placed third out of twelve teams in the St. Joseph-Ogden Spartan Classic. Eve- ryone’s expectations and the state ranking (12th, the last rank) really put the team in a pressure situation throughout the season.” Although the season was a good one, it was disappoint- ing. “Everyone thought the team would peak at the right time, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. The team just didn’t play with a lot of in- tensity. Too many times they played not to lose, instead of playing to win. Playing that way makes a big difference in overall performance,” re- ported Ms. Carpenter. She said, “Our team set two goals: to win the con- ference and to go at least as far as the team last year.” As she explained, “We met the first; we won the conference with a 10-2 record (21-4 overall). We play in an ex- tremely tough conference, so winning it really says some Christie, Jamie, Amber, Beth and Mary rest on their fire engine during thing about the team S abil- one part of the scavenger hunt, ities. During the first half of the season our players began to develop fundamentally. As they improved, their self-confidence grew also. Playing with the motto “TEAM me,” our players improved tremendously, began to learn to play with great enthusiasm and intensity, and really came on in the second half of the season. Not only was the team able to break the long losing streak with a win over Schlarman, but they also registered a shut-out of Milford and a come-from- behind victory over Paxton. Hopefully, this team is the start of many good things to come for Cornjerker Football.” — Coach Geddes AWARD WINNERS Dan Breeding — Special Team. The band marched at all the home Football games and for the National Sweetcorn Festival Parade. In addi- tion, the band also competed in three marching contests: Danville, Paxton, and Arthur. The Danville Marching Contest was held Oc- tober 3rd at Danville High School. The Hoopes- ton-East Lynn Marching Band placed third in both parade and field competition. The Paxton Marching Contest was held on October 17th at Paxton High School. Our band placed second in parade competition and third in field show. The Arthur Marching Contest was held Oc- tober 23rd at Arthur High School. The Hoopes- ton-East Lynn Marching Cornjerkers came home with many awards.
