Dawn Gaither Libby Witty, Editor in Chief “Catch the Wave' was chosen to be the title and theme of the 1987 yearbook because it expresses the excitement of looking back on a great year and then looking forward to a great future. I hope you will see what I mean as you flip through this book There are so many things to remember and so many things to look forward to. The Sophomore class has been described as the beginning of the wave, and the kids that are coming up with enthusiasm and new ideas The Junior class is the wave at its peak They are excited about almost being Seniors. When the wave crashes on the beach, you have the Senior class. They've been through it all and are now ready to form a new wave and go on to do new things, great things. We have a lot to look forward to In the future There will be people from here making their own waves. There will also be new faces to add to the growing spirit due to the consolidation. This year has been a great year for all organizations, activities, and sports Congratulations to everyone involved Skim the pages of the “Wave” and see how much you remember and maybe see things you've never seen before. The staff and I would like to wish everyone at H-EL the best of luck in the coming year. We would also like to wish Coach Hannig the very best of luck as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at DACC. There is a grow- ing wave to watch out for! Best of luck to the Graduating Class of 1987. Catch your wave and ride it as far as it will take you. Sincerely, Libby Witty, Editor and the Staff of “Catch the Wave” 2 One of the Art Club's many projects during the year is to paint displays on downtown merchant’s windows. This year the Council sent members Missy Ingram, Tonna Flint, and Reid Trego to the County Teen Con- ference. The entire Student Council also sat in on discussions involving the selection of a school name for the new district and the choosing of school col- ors and a mascot. A new scholarship was also started this year within the Student Council. It was called the Student Council Ser- vice Scholarship and it would give the lucky recipient $1000. Yet here 1 am and all the above has come _ ft true. The above describes some of the reactions Bobby has felt as a foreign exchange student this year. He left on July 26, 1986 and arrived at his new home in Bacolod City in Manila two days later. The school that Bobby attends is a high school and college combined and is also a Catholic school. He discovered that a former exchange student Jenny Salvador goes to the same school. Bobby was assigned to third year at the school. Everyone wears a uniform to school; it’s required. Forty-two other rules are also strictly enforced, even down to the length of a person s hair. Bobby’s classes are much the same as here: geometry, economics (Philippines), chemistry, PE, religion (mandatory), and language (lllongo). Grades are earned by number, not letters. Bobby has traveled through the various islands. In August he went to llios Island, in October to Boracay, in December to Manila for Christmas, and in February to Cebu. The Philippines has been Bobby’s home for the past year. Bob- by says, “Even though everything you read in the news media makes it sound as though there is a major war going on, this is a very peaceful, beautiful country. Exchange student? I am very glad to have been given the opportunity to be one and would do it again any time.” Tomoko Yotsumoto was our Foreign Exchange Stu- dent from Japan. She stayed with McQuigg’s the first semester, and Haxton’s and Shore’s the second semester. Tomoko answered the following questions asked by the Yearbook staff: Q Do you like it here? A Yes, I like it here. I like the people, the school, and new friends. Q What activities are you involved in at H-EL? A Drama Club and Chorus. I was in the play “Flowers for Algernon” and the musical “American Pop.” Q What are some of the differences between Japan and the U.S.? A Customs are different; school is different. The teachers change class in Japan, not the students. Dress code is more strict — no makeup or jewelry. Q What are your hobbies? A Listening to music, singing, Japanese dance, tea ceremony, piano, and watching T.V. S-E-NI-O-R-S Seniors, Seniors, are the Best!!! Charlie wins ‘‘Mr. Cool' Spirit Week, sponsored by the H-EL Cheerleaders, started on Tuesday, September 30th, with Dress-Up Day. The stu- dent body participated by dressing up in their nicest clothes. Wednesday, October 1st, the school was invaded by the Cab- bage Patch Kids. Also held on Wednesday was the Mr. Cornjerker Pageant. Thursday, October 2nd, was Button and Ban- dana Day. Everyone wore their bandana around their arms, legs, head or neck and displayed buttons on their shirts. Fri- day, October 3rd, was Homecoming. It was Red, White, and Blue Day. It was a very exciting day, except for the lousy weather. It rained all day — on the parade and on the game. A Pep Assembly was held Friday morning. The Cheerleaders led the Spirit Cry which the Junior Class won. Three of the football players modeled nightgowns and nightshirts. An Air Jam “Get Down On It” also took place. The Cheerleaders dressed up in the 50’s and 60’s style and danced to “Twist and Shout.” 20 “Mr. Comjerker contestants. Sam jamming at the Pep Assembly Cabbage Patch dolls visit school. There were many ac- tivities during the week which were spon- sored by the Student Council including the Queen’s Assembly, the bonfire, the parade, and the dance. On Friday it was very rainy and windy. The band was unable to perform in the parade due to the weather. Friday was the football game against Gibson City. “Past Due” played at the dance which was held Saturday night in the high school gym. Although the experiment ultimately failed, Charlie learned valuable lessons about love and trust. Flowers for Algernon 24 FAMOUS LAST WORDS about the play: “It's amazing how we managed to skip 6 scenes the first night and did them all the second night in an even shorter amount of time!” — Brian Stumph “I liked listening to the volleyball game backstage (near the bathrooms) during the performance.” Lisa Fix Have ya ever felt like you were schizophrenic? Monday morning was the Senior breakfast at the American Legion so the Seniors didn't have to be at school until 9:00. Monday was also Pajama Day. Tuesday was Senior Teaching Day and Dress Up Day. Wednesday was Hawaiian Beach Day. Thursday was the Senior Picnic and Toga Day. The picnic, which featured a hog, started 4th hour and lasted through lunch. Friday was the Senior Faculty Softball game and Class Colors Day. The Seniors were decked out in red and grey but the teachers still managed to win the game. Do I know you??? It’s not that bad!” Aly follows Nik and is lost too!” LADY JERKERS OFF AND RUNNING The Girls Cross Country team of 1986 had a tremendous season winning all five of their meets. Although there are only two full teams with which to com pete and no real conference championship to win, our girls still had the best overall record in the conference. The all-conference champion was Aly Jo Haggerty. Madonna Johnson ranked third, Nikki Kennett sixth, and Rita Haggerty seventh. Dawn Gritton and Christie Jahn received honorable mention coming in ninth and tenth respectively. Aly Jo was the regional champion and qualified for sectionals. 81 Go Moe! The Boys 1986 Cross Country team had an even win-loss record at 7-7. They finished third in the Conference and had two members selected to the All Conference team. David Vasquez was the All- Conference champion and Steve Tolch received honorable mention. David won the regional crown and also qualified for sectionals. Only one more mile, Terry! 83 Say What?!” “Hey — Luv them shoes!” Say Uncle' Bottoms Up! The season started fast for the Jerkers. For a while it looked like it would be a banner season as they ripped off to an 8-3 record. However, just before Christmas the Jerkers lost a one point decision to Champaign-Central and then lost to Rantoul. In January, the wrestlers won only one match against Westville and the chance of a great season fell to a mediocre 9-11-1. The Jerkers participated in several tournaments. They scored first in the Fresh.-Soph. Takedown, twelfth in the Stillman Valley Tournament, fourth in the Leroy, sixth in the Catlin Fresh.-Soph., and third in the Regional. Mr. Richards was quoted as saying, “It was a very disappointing (season) and below the potential of the team’s ability.” The season ended with a token force going into the regional and they were still able to finish third. 84 Mayday! Dawn got hurt playing volleyball, Jill got hurt in the Iroquois-West game, and Paige got the flu.” Unfortunately, during that time period the St. Anne Tournament was held. The Lady Cornjerkers were the 4th place finishers; however, Coach Hannig felt they could have finished higher. ‘‘We had the momentum go- ing our way. I think we would have played in the cham- pionship game if the three girls had been healthy. I real ly think the team was that tough.” The Varsity team had a 12-10 (overall) record and finished second in the Conference. The All-Conference winners were Lori Egnew and Gina Gregoire. Dawn Karrick received Special Mention and Paige and Stacy McQuigg received honorable mention. Individual awards given at the Sports Banquet were freethrow percentage winner Dawn Karrick, leading scorer Lori Egnew (10.6 ppg), leading rebounder Lori Egnew (172) and most improved player Anna Lu Cor- nell. The PHD (pride, hustle, and desire) award, which is determined by team vote, was given to Mechelle Goble. The Junior Varsity team had a 15-3 record according to Coach Jim Matta. They won first place at the Fresh- Soph tournament. Manager Janie Smith Will Anna Lu get to the ball first? Carl and Stacy show team work. Lady Cornjerkers, do you remember ... breakfast at Coach Carpenter’s house? Senior night banquet? Gina forgetting her shoes at the Clifton- Central game? almost being late for a volleyball game because of watching Coach Hannig’s junior high game and getting lost? double practices? the trip to the Assembly Hall to watch the state finals? Coach Hannig getting water poured on her after a junior high game? We’re havin’ a blast!” Mary Hannig is leaving H-EL after coaching here for three years. We asked her to reflect upon these years and relate to us a few of her memories. The first year was a year of building. It was a time of them get- ting to know me and my system. During the second year the players started to come together as a team. And this year was a year of “ifs.” If only we had had fewer injuries, we would have had a better win-loss record. If Jill Doty hadn’t been in- jured, we probably would have gone to super-sectional. Also, this year I feel I’ve played more of the role of peacemaker, rather than coach.” Coach Hannig Reflects . . . We asked Coach Hannig to give us some predictions on Lady Corn- jerker basketball in years to come. I think the teams will only get bet ter. The JV had a winning season, the seventh grade team won 12 of 14 games, and the eighth grade won 15 of 17. These three groups have learned a certain system of play. Whoever coaches them will have success because they’re basketball oriented mentally, they are willing as a group to put in the extra time to go to camps to learn, and their parents are very supportive of them and the program. If they continue to play that whoever takes over will have a lot of fun. For the most part I did.” Coach Hannig is leaving to fulfill one of her life’s goals which is to coach at a junior college. 4Tve always wanted to coach at the col- lege level and although the oppor- tunity has come a little sooner than I anticipated. I’m really looking for- ward to building a program at DACC,” stated Hannig. We on the staff wish her good luck and continued success. “Quotable Quotes from the Coach” Lori Egnew Mechelle Goble Dawn Carrick Paige McQuigg il ft Jill Doty Gina Gregoire Stacy McQuigg ... The team was a very young group as it was dominated by 8 juniors, while joining this were 3 seniors. Inexperience and lack of leadership at various times really showed on the floor at key moments in various games. The Cornjerkers finished second in their own Classic Tourney, sec- ond to Oakwood at the Rossville Holiday Tourney, and lost again to Oakwood in the Regional Cham- pionship game. Singleton handing-off Cornjcrkcr football began during the August heat and ended in late October. One of the innovations of first year coach Russ Stewart was “water sprinklers” to help the players “beat the heat.” Although the records of the Varsity and JV were not the best (0-9 for both), at times according to Coach Stewart, “The 1986-87 Football Squad played some ex- cellent football. (For example), we played Schlarman and Clifton Central very close, and played the rest of our opponents either a good first half or an excellent se- cond half of football.” When Coach Stewart was asked to evaluate the season he said, “With very little varsity experience returning to this squad, they pooled their desire and for- titude together to accomplish several offensive and defensive goals set forth at the beginning of the season.” He listed several goals as being reached and he said, “Turnovers, penalties, and quarterback sacks were all reduced over 75% from the previous seasons.” Coach Stewart also complimented the senior players. He said, ,.. the leadership of our seniors was excellent and the coaching staff would like to acknowledge their contribution, desire, and commitment to the program. We wish these seniors the best in their future endeavors.” 97 Where's the line?' Junior Varsity Breeding on the move Front Row (1 to r) Dan Breeding. Matt Goodrum. Scott Wilson. Steve Highfiil.
