Spring is the time for planting the seeds of corn and autumn is the time for harvesting the golden grain. Hoopeston-East Lynn High School is similar to this planting and harvesting in many ways. The one difference is that our planting begins in the autumn and harvest is in the spring. As we enter high school our teachers have planted within us the seeds of knowledge in many different and important areas. While here at H-E-L, we begin to sprout and shoot up, branching out into the many leaves of our individual interests. Our administration, the principal and others equally important, are the base of this entire system and have a busy job of fostering our growth. Many times the rain has come gently and all too often we have been lashed, but by having matured and grown strong our potential for harvest cannot be hid. Now the harvest season is upon us. As we remove our tassels we realize our growth here is over but our harvest in life is just begun. Our roots will always remain with Hoopeston-East Lynn 3 Senior H.S. H-EI Picayune Interviews Mr. Mark Conolly, World Traveler Mr. Conolly, a favorite History teacher here at H-EI, recently was on a tour of Japan that lasted six weeks. He left for Japan on March 8th and returned to finish out the school year on April 20th. The following was written after Mr. Conolly readily agreed to put up with our many questions. PICAYUNE: Why did you decide to visit Japan; any special reason? MR. CONOLLY: It was Mr. Huffmans suggestion. I applied to Rotary District 649 to be part of their Group Study Ex- change. a six-man team visiting Japan. I was pleased to find I was accepted following an interview. PICAYUNE: How were you able to take leave from school? MR. CONOLLY: Leave of absence was granted by the School Board. PICAYUNE: How did you prepare for your trip and did you take any souvenirs along? MR. CONOLLY: I spent five months planning. I finally decided to take coins, stamps. H-EI things (pens, notepads, special pennants) and also Illinois and Lincoln objects. PICAYUNE: What type of airplane were you on? MR. CONOLLY: JAL 747 San Francisco to Tokyo. PICAYUNE: How were you welcomed in Japan? MR. CONOLLY: Red carpet treatment PICAYUNE: What was your first thought at entering Japan? MR. CONOLLY: Here we go! PICAYUNE: What Japanese customs did you most enjoy experiencing? MR. CONOLLY: Hot towels. Tea. Kotatsu. PICAYUNE: Where did you stay in Japan? MR. CONOLLY: Japanese homes for the most part. PICAYUNE: What was your most memorable experience? MR. CONOLLY: First, the food was excellent. Second. I found the Japanese very knowledgable of the U.S. They are well in- formed on U.S. politics, economics, fashions, etc., while the average American (except for cars and electronics) knows next to nothing about Japan. Third, the Japanese are ex- perts in condensing the old and the new into an efficient society. PICAYUNE: How was the weather? MR. CONOLLY: It was their coldest spring in 40 years, but they are about four weeks ahead of us. The cherry blossoms finally came out our last week and they were a month late. PICAYUNE: How was their school system compared to ours here? MR. CONOLLY: Similar to the U.S.: 6 years elementary, 3 Junior High, and 3 Senior High. Almost ali students wear uniforms. Overall it was very rigid and structured. PICAYUNE: Care to comment on transportation? MR. CONOLLY: Taxis had automatic doors. Electric trains, public and private railroads, bullet train (Shinhasen) that travels 110 m.p.h. The subway was the most popular and the most crowded; sometimes your feet never touched the floor due to the number of people on it. PICAYUNE: What did you look forward to the most in coming home? MR. CONOLLY: My wife, no interpreters, and pizza. PICAYUNE: What was your first thought upon reentering the U.S.? MR. CONOLLY: Everybody is tall. PICAYUNE: Do you plan on sharing your experience with other groups in the community? MR. CONNOLLY: Yes, I’m already setting up a schedule. Anyone interested can contact me. Thanks. Mr. Conolly for your time. We hope the trip will be memorable to you always. ... Japan Trip Left to Right, Row One: Brenda Brougher, Cheryl Lee. Penny Nuss, Beth Ann Burnett, Angela Strawser. There 13,000 fans witnessed the Cornjerkers battle Mt. Pulaski only to eventually lose 61-54. For the second consecutive year, the Cornjerkers lost to the eventual state runner-up. The Cornjerkers started the season with a bang by steamrolling to their Classic Championship. By the first of January the Cornjerkers were 11-2, having lost to Schlarman in overtime without the dependable play of Bill Sullivan and losing to Grant Park in the championship game of the Rossville Holiday Tourney. The month of January was a struggle as the Cornjerkers’ played without the services ot Chris Leigh who had a stress fracture of the foot. The team did not play with the same intensity and determination as had been witnessed early in the season. As Leigh's foot improved, so did the play of the team. By the last regular game the Cornjerkers were primed for the state series. The Cornjerkers stormed to the Regional Tourney title by defeating Schlarman, who had previously twice defeated Hoopeston. The team progressed to the Watseka Sectional where twice after having large halftime leads had to rely upon Bill Sullivan’s last minute heroics to snatch victory from defeat in order to advance to the Pontiac Super Sectional. At Pontiac, the Cornjerkers played the number four ranked team in the state, the Toluca Wildcats, who entered the Super Sectional with a perfect 29-0 record. Though not playing their finest game, the Cornjerkers played with much intensity and determination to come from behind and send the game into overtime. The Cornjerkers in- bounded the ball from the opposite end, dribbled the entire length of the floor, and passed to Bill Sullivan in the corner for the points to tie. In the overtime period. Hoopeston completely dominated to win the right to advance to Champaign. For the third consecutive game, Thad Matta had made several excellent defensive penetrations to hit with a terrific pass either Chris Leigh or Bill Sullivan The trip to state was something the school and the community will long remember. The days prior to the game were marked by sign making, ticket sales, pre-tournament talk, radio and TV coverage, and-excited hometown fans. The Cornjerkers played a very good game versus Mount Pulaski, in fact the Cornjerkers led until the end of the third period against a much quicker team. The fourth quarter found Mount Pulaski utilizing their speed, in what was one of the best played games at state, to defeat Hoopeston East Lynn. Hoopeston East Lynn ended their season with a fine 26-6 record, 14th ranked in the state, and many fond memories which will be cherished forever by the players, cheerleaders students, and the many supportive fans of 1983-1984. The Seniors turned in an excellent season, the Junior players were very supportive, while the two Sophomores developed to help the team advance. The Senior tradition of '84 was represented by Leigh, Sullivan. Todd Sheridan, and Todd Wilken. Hopefully the precedent established by these four will be followed by the succeeding classes. Our Lady Cornjerkers Team Highlights The Varsity team placed second in the Sheldon Invitational Tournament which is the first regular tournament the girls have ever played in. The team finished second in the Wauseca Conference (finishing the highest they ever have in the Wauseca Conference.) The game with the largest point spread was when H-EL beat Clifton 59 to 38. The heart- breaker game of the season was being defeated by Rankin in the closing seconds 58 to 57. Overall the season was quite rewarding. Coach Mulcahey felt very fortunate to be able to work and share ideas with such great leaders, team players and most important ... great in- dividuals. The seniors will be missed since all four possessed the above qualities. The players returning have the potential to continue a successful program. They filled in admirably when called upon to play in the Varsi- ty game. The Junior team finished the season with a 9-9 record. M The H-EL Girls Varsity Team finished the season successfully with a record of 11-10. The girls finished the raison tied for second place in the Wauseca Conference with Paxton and Watseka. This years team was lead by four Seniors dedicated to the girls program for four years Nancy Buhrmester. Kim Strawser. Karen Poison and Michele Layden. Individual efforts that were significant during the season in- cluded: Karen Poison being chosen as first team member of the Sheldon Invitational All Tournament Team. Kim Strawser being chosen Cager of the Week by the Com- mercial News for the second year in a row and chosen to the All Wauseca Conference Team for the second year in a row. Kim has also shattered the all time individual rebound record for H- EL High School with a total of 355 rebounds Nancy Buhrmester selected to the All Wauseca Conference. All of us here who have put much time and effort into this yearbook also spent a lot of time deliberating on a theme. A theme is what makes any yearbook effective, and finding a good one is not only important, but usually the hardest job for a yearbook staff. After nearly a month of indecision our theme was decided upon, and hopefully you can appreciate the value and deep meaning in our comparison of the growth of corn and your own growth up to this point in your life. Of most importance was the comparison of the seniors to the harvesting of grain. What must be realized is the fact that after the harvest is the beginning of life, not the ending. We will all be replanting what we have learned and accumulated from this school into the new walks of life we will be leading from now on. After we have found our own niche in life we will be expected to give back, in some form or another, what we have taken and used for ourselves. This is an unending opportunity for us and we can begin our replanting now. It is planting time, seniors, but this round is OUR responsibility. I want to express a special thanks to everyone who has helped with this publication all during the year. Your help was very much ap- preciated — we want to see more of you next year! To my regular staff members, Phil, Chris, Diana, Judy. Crlstela, Jacki, Julie, Stephanie, Lisa Randy, and Kevin, I can't say thanks enough. There were times when we all felt like throwing up our hands, and yet here we all are, even at the end. By giving up so much time we have only gained. We now have the freindships, lasting memories, and especially a great yearbook to show off our combined dedication. Recognition should be great honor bestowed on our camera dub people who provided us with so many pictures that it hurt to leave all the good ones out when space was limited. Karl and Mr. Christine — you are super!! Now it comes time to recognize Miss Karen Kopka. our sponsor, who worked endlessly organizing and doing the majority of the work. A great morale booster, part-time mother, and a good friend are all very fitting descriptions. Miss Kopka was forever putting her all Into everything she did and was never quite ready to quit. I and the others, as one, all thank you! Coming in last, but with the most sensation, of course, is Mrs. Paula Keith, our yearbook representative from Taylor Publishing Company. Paula provided the laughs, flying hours, and the new ideas when we were all out. When we couldn’t figure something out, we said, wait, ‘til Paula comes, and then we knew it would be done right. All in all it was a wonderful and extremely successful year. It has been especially fulfilling to know that I have taken part in the lasting memories of good times, good people, and good places that only a yearbook can provide. Best Wishes — 191 Due to a successful basketball season, more pages were allowed for good coverage of the season. In doing so, page numbers had to be changed. This addition of basketball pages and the subsequent change of page numbers is responsible for the discrepancy in the table of contents. 192 ( PUBLIC UBRaPY HOOPBBTOM hoo isto
